I just purchased SHAFT. Great stuff. I'll have to look into his other material as well.
What other late 60's-70's soul am I missing?

Do you like Al Green?

The King Of Soul.

I can't understand how people overlook him either because he was the man. Guy was so far beyond pretty much everyone, bar Funkadelic, at the time and has an incredible body of work from '68 to '74/'75.

I'd recommend these Ike Hayes albums :

'Hot buttered soul'

'To be continued' (this and the above album are probably his best).

'Joy'.

'Black moses'.

'Tough guys' soundtrack.

'Truck turner' soundtrack.

But, yeah, like the other guy said, get some Al Green. 'Let's stay together', 'call me' and 'i'm still in love with you' are the ones to get. Or, if yer feeling cheap, get the 'best of..' which is terrific.

Alright, firsty, you need some Stax. Any of the Stax boxsets, 'otis blue' and 'dock of the bay' by Otis Redding, 'hip hug her' by Booker T & The M.G's, and the 24 Carat Black 'ghetto: misfortune's wealth' are all necessary.

If you want some Marvin Gaye then i'd go for 'let's get it on' and 'troubleman' soundtrack over 'what's going on' any day of the week.

You're obviously gonna need some Funkadelic too, so get 'funkadelic', 'maggot brain' and 'free your mind..' or any other around released on Westbound.

If you like Ike, you'll probably dig Barry White too, so get 'stone gon' and 'can't get enough'.

Some Curtis Mayfield is in order, so get 'curtis', 'superfly' soundtrack and 'roots'.

James Brown and his cronies are essential to yer collection, so get the 'sex machine..live' album, 'food for thought' by The J.B's and the Marva Whitney collection 'it's my thing'. Pick up the 3 James Brown's Funky People compilation's while you're at it.

Gotta have some blaxploitation soundtracks too, i'd go with 'across 110th street' by Bobby Womack & J.J Johnson and 'shorty the pimp' by Don Julian.

After you've purchased these then start searching out : The Meters, Syl Johnson, The Temptations, Bobby Byrd, Maceo Parker, Les Mccann, Eddie Bo...

Yeah I love him loads. I think "To be continued" is probably his best record (that I've heard). "Groove-a-thon" is even pretty good.

I'd also recommend in addition to the Curtis Mayfield LPs mentioned above the Short Eyes soundtrack. One that doesn't get mentioned much, but I think it's brilliant.

These compilations are terrific, although it looks as though they're out of print right now:

There's a fourth one too, called "Harlem Hustle", but it doesn't seem to be available now.

The 70s Isley Brothers are a good bet too... There's another thread about them.

I personally think that Isaac's REAL legacy is The Best Of Sam & Dave, all those fantastic songs he and David Porter wrote & produced. But there's no denying Hot Buttered Soul.

hot buttered soul is definitely his best record. i think truck turner is his best soundtrack.

Meister, you also might like some of the New Orleans funk compilations, like "Saturday Night Fish Fry", or stuff on the Curtom or Charly reissue lablels. The acts aren't as well known, but artists like Eddie Bo are amazing. Oh, and check out Cymande's Best Of album.

ike's rap - fckng hell that's a tune.

piscesboy, Friday, 3 June 2005 14:04 (twenty-one years ago)

"Chocolate Chip" is pretty cool too. Particularly the title track, which is in the same mould as Groove-a-thon.

KeefW (kmw), Friday, 3 June 2005 14:13 (twenty-one years ago)

stuff on the Curtom or Charly reissue lablels

Labels, even.

The live at Wattstax release

is supposed to be awesome. It was released a couple of years ago, and the bulk of the tracks were not on the original Wattstax soundtrack release.

drewo (drewo), Friday, 3 June 2005 20:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I can vouch for that one. It is awesome.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Friday, 3 June 2005 21:03 (twenty-one years ago)

The Live at the Sahara Tahoe album is choice as well.
