Rolling Stones' "Emotional Rescue" - C or D?

particularly the song but feel free to talk about the album if you like. I just wanted to apologize to JBR for the several times I got cranky about her putting this in her POX's and shit. It really is a gas, I was being a dork.

I know I like this one and "She's So Cold." Should I bother with the rest of the album?

miccio (miccio), Thursday, 2 June 2005 19:08 (eighteen years ago) link

Yes, yes, and yes! Reading for years about how the album was nothing but Some Girls scraps, I ignored it. But those scraps are GREAT! I swear by "Summer Romance" and "Send Her To Me."

Chuck Eddy to thread!

And I don't like the title song, for what it's worth.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Thursday, 2 June 2005 19:17 (eighteen years ago) link

It's definitely a highlight in the context of Forty Licks disc 2.

miccio (miccio), Thursday, 2 June 2005 19:18 (eighteen years ago) link

Classic, classic, classic. Possibly my fave Stones album after Let it Bleed and Satanic Majestys... "Where the Boys Go" and "Dance (pt.1)" are awesome.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 2 June 2005 19:22 (eighteen years ago) link

I can only hope the new Stones album is as slapdash as this one.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Thursday, 2 June 2005 19:25 (eighteen years ago) link

The first Stones song I got hooked on, at age six. Great bass line, great falsetto singing by Mick, terrific outro w/ the sax solo, etc. So ridicuously underrated.

I was actually thinking about starting a thread called "Lines in songs that should get applause in concerts," because every time I hear the line "I was dreaming last night..." (the point where Mick reverts to his normal voice too), I have to resist the urge to put my hands together and applaud. It's a great moment.

Keith C (kcraw916), Thursday, 2 June 2005 20:18 (eighteen years ago) link

probably my favorite post-'70s stones song. i didn't know the album was some girls scraps. but then again, tattoo you was black and blue-era (and maybe even earlier) scraps, and that was pretty damn great all the way through. if that's what it takes, i wish they'd keep feeding us those scraps.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Thursday, 2 June 2005 20:26 (eighteen years ago) link

Classic! As a whole album it's at least as good as Some Girls.

Title track is funny, fun bit of meh

"She's So Cold" still kills. I first heard that bassline in 1980; it haunts me to this day.

"Send It To Me" and "Where The Boys Go" - rock solid, and either one would have helped Black and Blue tremendously.

"Indian Girl" - what to make of this, hm? Bizarre third-world fantasia prefiguring the worst conceits of Under Cover. And then the payoff, which if anyone shouldn't be able to get away with, it's Mick Jagger: "Lesson number one/That you learn while you're young:/Life just goes on and on, getting harder, and harder." And wouldnchaknowitfoax... he makes it sound like the truth of the world.

"Down In The Hole" - the sleeper. Ignore it at your peril.

"All About You" - The Keef ballad. Yay!

rogermexico (rogermexico), Thursday, 2 June 2005 20:40 (eighteen years ago) link

Classic enough, just slightly behind "Miss You" as far as disco-(era)-Stones goes. Not crazy about Mick's Curtis Mayfield parody that opens it, but the Eric Burdon/"Spill The Wine" parody at song's end makes up for it. Plus some nice wordless falsetto "Hoo-hoo"-ing, and Charlie is Charlie. (As Xgau would say.)(And probably did, I'm pretty sure.)

Oh - and it's too late to check and see now, but I hope this thread's just about the SONG, not the LP.

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Thursday, 2 June 2005 20:46 (eighteen years ago) link

I used to have a tape of a preacher who put together his own "Rock and Roll: Satan's Music?" audio program. In it, he railed against "She's So Cold" not only because it said "Gee Dee" in it, but also because it supposedly all about necrophilia.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Thursday, 2 June 2005 20:47 (eighteen years ago) link

also because it supposedly all about necrophilia

Now that's just willfully stupid.

rogermexico (rogermexico), Thursday, 2 June 2005 20:50 (eighteen years ago) link

Better than Some Girls, Anthony. Their best album of the past, oh, quarter century or so, at least. Buy it (and do a search - we've discussed it on here plenty.) (And the title track is great, btw.)

xhuxk, Thursday, 2 June 2005 20:51 (eighteen years ago) link

I did a search for threads with the phrase "emotional rescue" in the title and found none. i have no doubt the album was discussed elsewhere but I felt it deserved a thread of its own.

"Better than Some Girls" is all I needed to hear. I always felt that album was overrated. I'll grab this fast.

miccio too lazy to call up password just now, Thursday, 2 June 2005 20:55 (eighteen years ago) link

I think Chuck and I have tried armwrestling posters into liking this and "Dirty Work" for mths now.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Thursday, 2 June 2005 21:02 (eighteen years ago) link

A little contrariness perhaps in order - I quite like the title track and "Dance (Pt. 1)." Not so sure about the rest of the album or how it's better than Some Girls apart from the fact that it includes those two tracks. Haven't heard it in a while, though.

And, of course, to put it in perspective, it was THE STONES and naturally none of it touches the epic quality of something like "Street Fighting Man" or "Gimme Shelter."

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Thursday, 2 June 2005 21:28 (eighteen years ago) link

I don't think anyone is, Tim, but the album's relative unimportance in the scheme of things is most refreshing. This is one album unencumbered by delusions of grandeur.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Thursday, 2 June 2005 21:34 (eighteen years ago) link

'Dirty Work' is frigging excellent. Christgau's stuff on it is definitive. (He wrote a longer piece than just the Consumer Guide entry in which he gave the album an A.)

As for 'Emotional Rescue,' has anyone mentioned "Let Me Go"? "Maybe I'll become a playboy, hang around in gay bars, and mooooove to the West Side of town."

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Thursday, 2 June 2005 22:57 (eighteen years ago) link

I wrote a longer piece defending "Dirty Work" not too long ago:

http://stylusmagazine.com/feature.php?ID=1333

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Thursday, 2 June 2005 23:22 (eighteen years ago) link

I like a few of the songs on Dirty Work and I can see why its unique nature would appeal (Jagger on vicious auto-pilot, sound zonked to the gills) but man I can't go with the A talk. I think it's a chore to slog through as a whole.

And dude, Alfred, while I understand most of that piece there are SO instrumental concessions to the marketplace on this album. Those drums? It's not that it wasn't calculated to win, it's that it didn't win.

miccio (miccio), Thursday, 2 June 2005 23:24 (eighteen years ago) link

The sequencers and drum machines on "Back To Zero" are the only noxious concessions to the marketplace (and, ok, the synths on "Winning Ugly"), and even that's redeemed by the guitar fills and Jagger's ambivalence. Yeah, the drums are beefed up, but what else is new? It's Steve Lillywhite, it's the '80s. When I hear "Hold Back," "Winning Ugly,' and "One Hit To The Body," I'm struck by how scared shitless Jagger sounds amidst the strum and drang of Keith and Ronnie's guitars; he ain't a young turk anymore, his last solo album wasn't a big seller, these guys can't dress, let'em have it. Even more than the classic Stones ballads, these are more compelling glimpses into whatever soul Jagger's got.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Thursday, 2 June 2005 23:37 (eighteen years ago) link

Oh I agree re: soul of Jagger.

miccio (miccio), Thursday, 2 June 2005 23:38 (eighteen years ago) link

I just think you have to care about the soul of the Stones more than I do to enjoy burning through it. It's no shock to me that Robert Christgau loves it.

miccio (miccio), Thursday, 2 June 2005 23:39 (eighteen years ago) link

I'm cringing that I actually wrote Jagger has a "soul."

(then again, if you listen to "Undercover," Jagger's ideal of vulnerability is to make breakfast-table remarks about Latin Americans and to make us notice the hot cum dripping on the girl's thighs. The real Ying Yang Twin.)

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Thursday, 2 June 2005 23:47 (eighteen years ago) link

Alfred, where are you on 'Steel Wheels'? That's where they lost me for the most part, though I thought 'Voodoo Lounge' made some good excuses for itself.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Thursday, 2 June 2005 23:57 (eighteen years ago) link

It was the first Stones album I owned, so I'm simpatico. "Mixed Emotions" is an amazing song (and their last great single), and I'm partial to "Almost Hear You Sigh," which has got some interesting chord changes. But it's more of a concession to the marketplace (in this case, those old-timers blubbering about the death of the Stones as a cultural force) than "Dirty Work."

Jagger's "Wandering Spirit" seems more, er, "authentic" (a word I use with caution around Mr D).

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:02 (eighteen years ago) link

Yeah, I kept 'Wandering Spirit,' but I never pull it out.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:09 (eighteen years ago) link

I have a theory: Pearl Jam suddenly started recording more consistent albums around "No Code," when Eddie Vedder started playing more electric rhythm guitar. Same thing happend with the Stones around "Some Girls" when Mick strapped on his own.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:13 (eighteen years ago) link

I love this album (Emotional Rescue, that is). "All About You" has made me weep many, many times. But Alfred, you still haven't sold me on Dirty Work. And I want to like it, I really do. I just can't.

If for some reason you ever need to reference that year again, just use that photograph.

I think the three big disco Stones singles ("Miss You," this and "She's So Cold"--though I guess the last is more new-wavey) would all make my Stones POX. They fit the genre perfectly.

Anyway, this song is all about Mick--I'm torn between his falsetto and his spoken word breakdown ("I will be your knight in shiiiining aaahhhhhhmooorrrrr") being the highlight of the song. Utterly fantastic.

Some Girls has the edge because of Shattered, Miss You, and Before They Make Me Run, but Emotional Rescue is great too. They perfected Charlie's drum sound on those two albums. (I remember Mick & Keef giving the engineer Chris Kimsey buckets of credit.)

Taylor, Saturday, 22 April 2006 14:15 (seventeen years ago) link

I always wanted to hear a 12" version of "Slave" off of Tattoo You. That would have been a nice edition to the Stones' dance singles.

Y'know, reading that Stylus piece on Dirty Work does make me want to check it out again but Alfred, do you really think the record has the "most venomous guitar sound of the Stones’ career"? Thems are some strong, strong words. I'm not sure it can be more venemous than "Stray Cat Blues" with that piercing ending.

I've listened to five Stones albums today, and this is the first "bad" one, IMO

"All About You," "Dance (pt 1)," and the title track are OK (I'm not big on that disco bassline in rock songs, but that's my problem). But most of the others are.... not good

It's unexpected b/c the two albums that flank it in their discography are very strong
