A quick Google turned up a tracklist for Ivan Smagghe's Fabric mix, out next month:

05 - Iñaqui Marin – You Can’t Scape – Regular
06 - Michael Mayer – Heiden – Kompakt
** - Lopazz – Blood (acapella) – Output
07 - DJ Koze – The Geklöppel Continues - Kompakt

14 - Poni Hoax – Budapest (Joakim Italo Dub) - Tigersushi

Great tracklisting- it's great to see that Poni Hoax track, and I'm curious to hear what he does with the Kills. I'm just hoping it's a bit less stolid than the Suck My Deck mix from last year...

Press release and cover art here.

This looks a bit drier and less bombastic than I would have expected. Trouble is every DJ in europe bites his style from 2 years back nowadays so it must be tricky for him. That Ada remix of Booka Shade is a fuckin awesome record though.

Jacob (Jacob), Friday, 3 June 2005 03:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I have some of these records, it looks like another new style of mix for Ivan, hooray!

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 3 June 2005 10:54 (twenty-one years ago)

12 - Audion – Just Fucking (Roman Flügel's "23 Positions In A One-Night Stand" Mix]

haha omg

p.s. fabrc: WHERE IS THE VILLALOBOS ALREADY??

strng hlkngtn, Friday, 3 June 2005 10:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Inaqui Marin often does awesome stuff, but I can't remember if I've heard "You Can't Scape" before.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 3 June 2005 11:23 (twenty-one years ago)

has anyone heard audion's just fucking single yet? any word?

dyng, Friday, 3 June 2005 11:24 (twenty-one years ago)

if i remember correctly, villalobos mix isn't coming out till November

a, Friday, 3 June 2005 12:41 (twenty-one years ago)

that poni hoax is awesome. probably my favourite joakim mix.

Trouble is every DJ in europe bites his style from 2 years back nowadays so it must be tricky for him.

you think so? i always think he sounds pretty unique when i hear him play and he always seems to have records no one else has.

stirmonster (stirmonster), Friday, 3 June 2005 13:05 (twenty-one years ago)

WTF, stop hating on this shit, it's excellent with another Ivan mix. And more to come: Diplo is the one on Fabric 25. Looks like it will be a another good fall.

djagge (djagge), Friday, 3 June 2005 19:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I mean 24 of course. Whatever, it will be probably be good whatever the number. Released October 25th.

djagge (djagge), Friday, 3 June 2005 19:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think it's hating on Smagghe to say that other DJs bite his style! Which they do, although since with Smagghe it's more accurate to talk about "styles" (the three of of his four mixes released-to-date that I've heard have all been pretty different) such attempts are never entirely successful.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 3 June 2005 22:17 (twenty-one years ago)

The thought of a Villalobos Fabric mix is insanely thrilling.

KKSF, Friday, 3 June 2005 22:22 (twenty-one years ago)

god, i am actually kind of interested/looking forward to teh diplo one

strng hlkngtn, Friday, 3 June 2005 22:23 (twenty-one years ago)

He's the devil!

KKSF, Friday, 3 June 2005 22:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah the Joakim Poni Hoax thing is amazing, though I have a special place in my heart for his remix of Clashing Egos. That one is an amazing piece of music.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 6 June 2005 20:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Diplo needs to put some minstrels on his Fabric cd cover. That'll show that Sasha Frere-Jones fella.

Twitch, I haven't heard him recently so dunno, but I guess I mean that all the crappy ex-prog jocks that pass through singapore keep playing sets that sound a bit like "How to kill the DJ pt 1" except without the inspiration ergo the "2 years ago" bit. But yeah, obviously he's a don.

Jacob (Jacob), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 04:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm quite eager to hear this.

Just had a quick listen to that Kills track 'No Wow' - I can definitely see how it can work, it's quite structured. Has a bit of a Patti Smith feel about it.

Mika, Tuesday, 7 June 2005 04:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Patti Smith + Plastikman = The Kills (of course it works ;)

Omar (Omar), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 06:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Well - yeah!

Maybe it'll take the role of Superpitcher's 'I Walk' remix in Death Disco actually...

Mika, Wednesday, 8 June 2005 07:09 (twenty years ago)

five tracks in, this is amazing! amazing amazing!

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 17:44 (twenty years ago)

four weeks pass...
haha. the third track with the google translation of charlies spacer woman = best faux german lyrics since die eier von satan

fe zaffe (fezaffe), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 14:22 (twenty years ago)

I can't get with this much.

:(

eat my replacement (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 14:34 (twenty years ago)

it's taking me forever to download :-(

toby (tsg20), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 14:48 (twenty years ago)

In previewing this, I must say it's a little bit disappointing. Smagghe's sound works best when he's teamed with Arnaud Rebotini as Black Strobe, and I really don't know why Fabric didn't solicit them both for this project. I love Smagghe, but he hasn't released a single CD mix as diverse (and muscular) as the Black Strobe set on Radio 1's Essential Mix from last year. Not even close.

The Fabric tracks here are solid enough, but there's no REAL surprises, which is an unfortunate trend in the Fabric releases- I know most of those DJs drop some real bombs and creativity in their live mixes, so I have to ask why Fabric consistently releases mixes that are straight forward track-to-track-to-track?

jsoulja (jsoulja), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 16:17 (twenty years ago)

And I actually LIKE the Fabric series, but it's kind of riding the edge of cheese.

Every time I bring one into work, my minimal-techno-snob co-worker lifts a leg and contorts his arms into a mocking GateCrasher pose.

And, well, he has a point....

jsoulja (jsoulja), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 16:22 (twenty years ago)

I'd like to see that.

I think I agree with you, though. The Akufen one was a bit different, maybe.

eat my replacement (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 16:23 (twenty years ago)

j - we've talked abt this already! te licensing dept at fabric obv makes some serious compromises to be able to afford putting out mixes (with expensive packaging) month after month after month ...

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 16:44 (twenty years ago)

08 - [T]ékël – Snake Tartare – Initial Cuts
09 - The Kills – No Wow – Domino
10 - Konrad Black – Jefferson And Braeside – Wagon Repair

I don't know track 8 and 10, but to see them before/after a Kills song makes me very curious.

Nicole (StarShine), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 17:10 (twenty years ago)

geesus, i cant imagine ever having a minimal tech snob co-worker.

ambrose (ambrose), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 17:56 (twenty years ago)

V- I hear you, and I don't really mean to rip into Fabric, as I think they're fantastic to be releasing their level of quality as consistently as they do it.

Maybe this is a question for another thread, but do the licensing issues apply to FabricLive mixes as well?

Also, I guess I'm taking issue with Smagghe's solo dominance over Black Strobe w/r/t CD mixes. To date, we have a select few Black Strobe singles, with no actual mix CDs despite their playing many club dates. By contrast, we have Smagghe's Hard, Suck My Deck, How To Kill The DJ, Death Disco, and I'm sure a few others I've missed. There's no doubt Rebotini brings some serious MUSCLE to the table, so why can't we please, please, please get more of him?

jsoulja (jsoulja), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 17:57 (twenty years ago)

A- it's weird. He walks around waving Raster-Noton releases calling out "If you ain't got this, you ain't got NUTHIN'!"

jsoulja (jsoulja), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 18:01 (twenty years ago)

if he phrased it like this, your co-worker is otm

fe zaffe (fezaffe), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 18:05 (twenty years ago)

I don't know if I'm feeling this...need to give it another listen.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 20:20 (twenty years ago)

oh! i get it, you work at milles plateaux ;)

ambrose (ambrose), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 20:22 (twenty years ago)

which reminds me: did Mille Plateaux go last year?

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 22:00 (twenty years ago)

yeah ok, weak joke. couldnt think of anywhere else where people would get competitive about raster norton

ambrose (ambrose), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 22:43 (twenty years ago)

mille plateaux collapsed under the weight of its own rhizomes (sorry) around the time of the EFA bankruptcy, i think, which would make it either early 2004 or very late 2003.

oddly, achim is back with a slew of new labels, including plateaux resistance. but i haven't been too taken with anything i've heard from them yet.

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 23:06 (twenty years ago)

not going to derail the thread too much here, but if I remember correctly there was a GIANT backstock of mille plateau stuff on ebay within the last year. everything that had been produced but not distributed.

mike h. (mike h.), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 23:14 (twenty years ago)

I think Smagghe's non Blackstrobe mixes are very good. Fuck your minimal techno snob co-worker, he sounds like an asshole. I mean seriously if Fabric 23 is cheese then you're living deep in the techno k-hole! anyone who makes mocking gatecrasher poses should be exterminated anyway.

almost all good dance music could at some point be mocked with a gatecrasher pose, the day it can't is a sad day.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 7 July 2005 10:55 (twenty years ago)

what is a gatecrasher pose, pardon my ignorance?

I'm listening to this mix now.

Good Dog (Good Dog), Thursday, 7 July 2005 13:01 (twenty years ago)

I dunno, some sort of e'd up raver pose!

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 7 July 2005 13:29 (twenty years ago)

http://www.djvibe.com/news/images/thumb.gatecrasher_logo.gif ?

fe zaffe (fezaffe), Thursday, 7 July 2005 13:39 (twenty years ago)

that's the one

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 7 July 2005 13:47 (twenty years ago)

Ronan,

I think my co-worker's point was that based on what he's heard of them, he finds the Fabric mixes in general a little bit predictable, which I tend to agree with. He actually likes the other Smagghe stuff he's heard (he hasn't heard Smagghe's yet- he was stabbing at the Fabric SERIES), and mock Gatecrasher poses ARE kind of funny, to me anyway. Good natured stabs, mind you- we're all fans here!

But he's really into Smagghe's "Suck My Deck" mix, and we both saw Damian Lazarus last Saturday in LA for his promo tour of the next "Suck My Deck". The set was MASSIVE, and as good as I think the new Lazarus mix is, it's nothing to his live set (which was kind of the point of my original Fabric crit- not nearly as expansive as a live set- which Vahid fairly pointed out is probably due to a matter of licensing...)

jsoulja (jsoulja), Thursday, 7 July 2005 22:50 (twenty years ago)

I guess so, I think CD mixes by nature are not really the same as live sets, sometimes they are better (if you're listening at home), almost everybody plays alot harder live.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 7 July 2005 23:53 (twenty years ago)

three weeks pass...
Smagghe's "Suck my Deck" mix is a real hands-inthe-air thing compared to this mix though...I love this Fabric mix. It's listening music that gets me in a really nice mood while I'm working. Not the ultimate compliment for a DJ mix perhaps, but still. The last 5 or so tracks are especially good.
