Where is the love (/cultural or historical significance) for (/of) 'Freddie's Dead' by Curtis Mayfield?

Cheeky as I realise it is, I have an exam tomorrow asking that very question and the thoughts of the oracle that is ILX would come in very handy.

Muchos gracias

This song actually had a pretty profound effect on me. I've always cited it as one of the reasons I got into sociology (my major). It looks at the anatomy of a trend (death from drug abuse among urban blacks), trying to identify where it went wrong for one victim. The important thing, to me, is how it humanizes Freddie: he's got love in his heart, but he was misused/abused etc. The narrator sees this and reflects on Freddie's/his own role in society. So there's a very personal sense of disillusionment revolving around something that wouldn't have even made the papers in its day. I could go on -- what a fantastic song to write about! The bass line's hot, too

The whole SUPERFLY album is amazing, obsessed me for ages. The film is a kind of classic too. The story is that Curtis agreed to score it before seeing the finished movie, hated it, and produced something designed to undercut and deglamorise what is the tale of an unrepentant badass coke dealer. The resultant tension between this tough, amoral little indie movie and Curtis' incredible, overwrought soundtrack takes both to somewhere completely other.

Nick, see Greil Marcus' comments in 'Mystery Train.'

Ooops - I realise I may have given you less than 12 hours to source and view SUPERFLY. Which is a movie plot in itself.

Trust me, it'll be worth it!
