S'got to do with his meeting one of the future members of Whiskeytown in a bar one time, who turned him on to George Jones, New Riders of the Purple Sage and Gram Parsons. Previously he had been rocking out in The Patty Duke Syndrome (Husker Du, Black Flag blah blah). I guess the "wishy washy country poop" just stuck. Probably something to do with his up-bringing in Jacksonville, North Carolina as well. But his latest (and probably his most NY and LA influence) offering is his least country to date. Maybe location has a big influence on the Adams boy.

Ah, there's his problem. What if he had met up with a guy who turned him onto Visage, John Foxx and Depeche?

Ned, you're evil.

Sean, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

yeah his latest cd is kinda wishy washy but the last whiskeytown album was not bad IMHO

Ned, you're evil.

And a goth and...

I remember him saying that NY, NY had a 'Lou Reed kinda vibe going...' which offended me greatly.

That most recent Ryan Adams record sounds like John Mellencamp. Which can be a good thing--John Mellencamp may be America's greatest songwriter. Fuck Stephen Merritt.

I don't think Adams's songwriting style is like Mellencamp's, but their singing style is similar. I don't know if Mellencamp is America's greatest songwriter, but he is damn solid, and very undervalued. And he's way sexier than Stephen Merritt. Also, Adams and Mellencamp are both short.

It's the sax solo. Clearly.

Country poop is really the thing in big metro cities these days, ain't it? Dressing up like a South Carolina college student and making half ass attempts at the Flying Burrito Brothers... NOT what I expected the big music thing to be in the 2000s when I was a wee one.

Brian MacDonald, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Brian's OTM. Fake country is big in NY.

L.A., too. I escaped SoCal just in time before the B**CHW**D SP**KS ruled the town... It was a narrow escape, too.

Ryan Adams' sound owes precious fuck-all to anything happening in New York City.

"The sweetest winds they blow across the south." (RA)

Yeh, you're right.
