Which artists are you most anxious to hear a future album from?

I'm sure this has been done before, but...

Tim, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Inspired by Andy's demand on Permafrost for a new album from Jorg Burger (whether as The Modernist, Geometric Farms, Triola). I thought "yes, absolutely, I can't think of an album I'd want to hear more."

With the potential exception of these worthy contenders:< BR> The Streets
MRI (assuming they include their click-hop sound)
Ms. Dynamite
more to follow...

NB: the question isn't supposed to refer to artists who are slowcoaches and haven't released anything in ages, but artists whose recent incremental work has been so awesome that it almost necessitates a full album for you to digest (I am aware of ROCKIST implications here).

Tim, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

well, boards of canada obviously. the streets too. maybe there are dmx krew and lonesome organist albums on the horizon?

gareth, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

oh, i see

gareth, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Anytime I look forward to one (such as Spiritualized) it's a bit of a let down, so I try not to. I'd prefer to be pleasantly surprised.

Nicole, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Dull answer, to be sure, but I'm most curious to hear something new from Eminem.

scott p., Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Nick Lowe, Dumpy's Rusty Nuts, Juice on The Loose, The Micky Jupp Band

For explanation see ILE Goff thread

Dr. C, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

The Shins and/or Mr Bungle (I'll take a new album from either). I really want to hear where they go next.

static, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

yeah ... mr. bungle especially. it's really impossible to predict what they'll do, i just hope mike patton isn't too busy with fantomas and all his ten million other projects to keep mb going.

Mickey Jupp: oh, yes. New Jupp material: urgent and key.

Leaked titles include : Southend Pier Blues / Shoeless in Shoeburyness / What's Jupp? / Highway To Portsmouth / Seaside Sister / P&O Boogaloo / Cromer's Not The Answer

I'm really wanting to hear more Superpitcher, whose "Tomorrow" on Kompakt 3 I've been obsessed with. I always get wrapped up in imagining things that song could lead to, so much that I think he (I'm guessing it's just one guy, Aksel Schaufler) purposefully left it unrealized and unresolved in a lot of ways. I love the way it keeps building and building toward something that never comes.

Andy, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

You are a great man, PF. A GREAT man.

Dr. C, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Boredoms
XTC - any bets on Beatlesque pro-pop?

dleone, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I think I'm with Nicole on this one...the last number of albums I anticipated eagerly turned out to be huge letdowns. Because of that I try to avoid looking at upcoming releases lists now and just pick the albums up when they show up in the store.

Sean Carruthers, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I'm too busy being anxious to hear past albums I can't get ahold of. They can let me down just as much as an anticipated new release. Right now, it's LU and those Savage Republic re-issues.

Curt, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Big yes to that. The other two tracks that are on the Heroin 12" are rather different from "Tomorrow," very elektro/'80s synth- oriented. "Shadows" on the Total 2 comp is possibly the best thing Mo' Wax never released (aside from Dabyre).

I'm not even gonna get started on how much M. Mayer and Sascha Funke LPs are needed.

Andy K, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

(BTW: Sascha Funke = best name for a producer EVAH.)

Oasis and The Strokes doing an album together. Working title: Beam Us to Mars. The money from the sales would be invested into a spaceship with which our two beloved bands would then be sent where they belong: into space.

eminem yes, especially since rumors say his next single introduces a rhyme style that destroys all pre-established rules we have about mcing! (em-haters you know this setup is too easy so ignore it)

Ned Raggett, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Ms. Dynamite. Especially as it would be her first album, & I'd love to see what she could do with it. I'd like to see a whole B15 Project album too. Outside of garage, I'd like to hear where Foxy Brown goes from here, and a Josie And The Pussycats pt. II would be killer.

Magnetic Fields, Modest Mouse, Flaming Lips and well, ...Trail of Dead.

Hochenkeit (if they're still together), Bugskull, Super Furry Animals, Land of the Loops, Sientific American, El Stew or related, Thingy, Hot Snakes, Sultans, Kinski, Transformer Lootbag, Milk Cult,...

I'm too goddamn anxious

Brian MacDonald, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Yeah, Flaming Lips (should be in June/July for U.S.) Also Low seem to be getting even better, and new David Bowie, Beck is always awesome. But Mercury Rev, Spiritualized, Bjork, Aphex Twin just released thier new albums so that will hold me for some time.

A Nairn, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Hold tight, Gage-O... I'm sure your wish will be granted. I'd like to hear whatever's new from French Kicks.

Andy, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Tupac keeps releasing stuff, but I don't think he's made any artistic growth on the last few albums.

Sterling Clover, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Of Montreal's forthcoming "Aldhils Arboretum" has the potential to be great. Based on their recent track record and the band's stated ambition to make this more of a "singles" record, I'm hoping for good things.

Nate-o, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Gage-o, you forgot Bob Marley.

David, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Will let people know when Ms Dynamite surfaces - my friend's just signed her to his new label, having left Source to do so!

suzy, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Sterling, apparently Foxy's rush-recording a more commercial album to make up for Broken Silence's cool reception. Meanwhile, I third all those Kompakt nominations.

I've subsequently realised that this question is best suited to dance acts, who tend to release a lot of their most interesting work between or outside of albums.

Tim, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

XTC's at the top, although I'll admit they don't fit the incremental work criteria. Beatlesque pro-pop, dleone? Try a little harder than that. :) Oh, and a new Cibo Matto record would be interesting to hear too.

Beatlesque pro-pop, dleone? Try a little harder than that.

I'll be happy if they do something that sounds nothing like Wasp Star, which was not a terrible album, but sounded very much like what middle aged XTC guys think "rock" sounds like. Maybe I'm not ready for them to grow up yet.

dleone, Saturday, 2 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Surprised no one's mentioned a certain Kevin Shields' band.

bnw, Saturday, 2 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Even if we don't keep in touch, I hope to hear every song the pinefox writes. I hope to hear the versions where he sings and plays his songs.

The Clientele will have a new ep soon. I want to hear it very much, but I'm not anxious about it because I know it will be fine without any care or worry on my part. I can wait for it. I could even save it for the end of the day.

youn, Saturday, 2 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Cat Power, Del, another Prince Paul/Automator joint, a Josie and the Pussycats sequel, Britney, The new Breeders and a new Stephen Malkmus album where he pulls out a Lou Reed and makes his "Transformer."

JM, Sunday, 3 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Britney

You just got one! You greedy or something?

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 3 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Lauryn Hill by a mile.

"pop insearchofa quick buck... could be v. good, no?"

Maybe if it were Lil' Kim yeah, but Foxy just sounds indistinctive when she's trying to fit in; all the best moments on Broken Silence are the weirdedt - the dancehall/eastern tracks, the ballads etc. Under the circumstances I think Chyna Doll Part Two is not the best idea

Tim, Sunday, 3 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

- Giant Sand, there is actually a new album (only covers) coming out March, 18th
- Howe Gelb
- OP8
- Calexico

alex in mainhattan, Monday, 4 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

But Alex, H. Gelb and his buddies release something everything every ten minutes or so, don't they. Even if they're dead (Rainer). What are you advocating here? That they switch to every FIVE minutes? Bargain bins the world over will be unable to cope.

Dr. C, Monday, 4 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Alex Chilton. I'm more waiting for Malkmus' Berlin.

Tim: I'm hoping she'll take the production tricks with her.

Joan Jett comeback.

Sterling Clover, Monday, 4 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

H. Gelb and his buddies release something everything every ten minutes or so
You are quite right Dr.C. They release more than one album per year. But that is perfectly ok and only shows that they are very creative artists. I still have not found a bad album of Howe and friends. Did you ever listen to Chore of Enchantment or Centre of the Universe (nice review by Ned in the AMG) Dr.C? Two of the best albums of the last ten years. Something like VU on magic mushrooms transposed to today.

alex in mainhattan, Monday, 4 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Mm, thank you for the compliment, I had almost forgotten I'd written that!

Ned Raggett, Monday, 4 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I'm hot to hear the Buzzkunst Devoto/Shelley thing and I'm about ready for more Can Ox, Aesop Rock, and Prefuse73.

Scott Walker. Scritti Politti. Polly Jean Harvey getting back to her roots.

I want a big sticky sweet pop record from Brad Laner (Medicine/Amnesia/Electric Company).

And Low and The Boredoms.

dan, Monday, 4 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I've been listening to this 20 minute (or so) tape of Captain America, which I think was just another incarnation of the Vaselines. I think it would be great if Stuart Murdoch worked with a band like that.

If D Boon was still alive, it would be interesting to hear what a new Minutemen album would sound like (though judging by the direction they were heading in 1985, they might have turned into a Blue Oyster Cult/Creedence tribute act...).
