Also, while we're at it: Tago Mago/Ege Bamyasi or Faust IV?

But i'll take Can over Faust as far as this thread goes.

Anyway. I pick Can because "Future Days" is one of the greatest album evah.

I truly love Can, but Faust had that cut and paste approach to their music that makes them more fun to listen to.

i saw damo suzuki perform with cul de sac last year and it was amazing, damo sounded and looked the same and cul de sac did their thing, pretty much channeling the can vibe. so faust are hardly the last ones standing (only two are original members anyway)

Seems to be a precipitous fall off after these two, as far as "krautrock" is concerned. Unless the Neu/Harmonia/Cluster/Kraftwerk spectrum is considered "krautrock".

I seriously feel like I am missing something when I listen to Faust, because they haven't impressed me that much and I have both IV and So Far.

Quite seriously, you might try '71 Minutes' and the 'BBC Sessions +' discs. I like them both better than So Far, and probably better than IV.

However, if we constrain it just to the '70s, I'll take Faust's worst moments over Can's worst moments. I'll take failed noise/pop experiments over dull new age ethno-pastiche jams any day.

You must have missed taking sides: can vs neu , where we covered quite a bit of this ground - and several people actually professed a preference for Neu over Can.
Personally? Faust > Neu > Can - although Can and Neu might have swapped places if you ask me again later.

But here's the curious thing, and I've never read anyone else say this: I then got the first one, the first self-titled album from 1971, and thought it was a complete turd. Vaginal sand from beginning to end. And yet that album is always mentioned as being great right along with So Far and IV. Why?
Oh, and in answer to the thread question, Can by a country mile.

I say this only because I own virtually everything they've ever recorded (same with Neu!), and have never in a million years been compelled to raise my collection of Can releases beyond the 5 I own.
I suspect the Can love is a rockist need for a conventional jamming rock band versus a mechanized army of punishing Dada-bots. I tend to like obnoxious experimentation over drug addled escapist rock.
Oh fuck it, come to think of it, I kinda like both.
