Thank GOODNESS

I'm bad and dirty and going to hell (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 02:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow, people on the internet are such little bitches about music. "OH NO, NIKE IS BRINGING MINOR THREAT TO A MAINSTREAM AUDIENCE! AHHHHH!! HOW WILL I LOOK INDIE NOW?!"

Christian, Tuesday, 28 June 2005 02:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Don't get me wrong, I don't think Ian would endorse this type of thing (although would he REALLY care?)....but that's not the major concern of most people.

Christian, Tuesday, 28 June 2005 02:48 (twenty-one years ago)

and so the backlash begins

peter smith (plsmith), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 02:49 (twenty-one years ago)

damn, i should have just skipped the other thread and read christian's summary instead.

"OH NO, NIKE IS BRINGING MINOR THREAT TO A MAINSTREAM AUDIENCE! AHHHHH!! HOW WILL I LOOK INDIE NOW?!"

where was this argument posted?

PeopleFunnyBoy (PeopleFunnyBoy), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 02:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Don't get me wrong, I don't think Ian would endorse this type of thing (although would he REALLY care?)....

yeah, he did really care, hence the statement from dischord saying they were really unhappy with what happened.

Zack Richardson (teenagequiet), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 02:57 (twenty-one years ago)

(xpost) yeah i don't think that has anything to do with it. it's more about preserving dischord/mackaye's anti-corporate reputation, which seems fair enough, given that the ad has the effect of being seen as an implied endorsement.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 02:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, I hadn't heard of the message from Dischord/Ian, so I take that part back....but still, every message board I've been to is complaining about how many 12 year olds will be running around listening to Minor Threat as a result of the ad.

Christian, Tuesday, 28 June 2005 03:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I love the bot-generated quality of that letter.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 03:05 (twenty-one years ago)

every other message board is stupid.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 03:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Cheating is bad, Richard Basehart is good.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 03:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Cheating. Cheating is bad. Richard Basehart is good.

So! How about some lunch?

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 03:27 (twenty-one years ago)

So was it created by skaters or Nike employees, I'm confused here. They can't be both, right?

*brain explodes*

mike h. (mike h.), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 03:30 (twenty-one years ago)

So! How about some lunch?

BURN HIM!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 03:35 (twenty-one years ago)

donut e-g (donut), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 03:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey, I've been wandering what that movie that knife-head thing is from ever since I saw it at a Sleater-Kinney concert. It was...an engaging film. Compelling, even.

shanecavanaugh (shanecavanaugh), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 04:04 (twenty-one years ago)

That would be Guiron, from Gamera vs. Guiron. He's a rather dumb-ass monster.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 04:07 (twenty-one years ago)

this whole situation is disgusting. nike makes something of actual utitlity, a shoe, and in doing so has lifted thousands out of poverty in areas of the world previsously visited only by warlordism and collectivist strangulation. in doing so, they should be free to use any and all images at their disposal in furtherance of the generation of real goods (ie profit).

minor threat's music is an organizational tool for degenerate middle-class pretenders; their effect on national life has undoubtedtly been a net negative. if a firm was to finally put their symbology to some positive use they should feel humble!

g e o f f (gcannon), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 05:26 (twenty-one years ago)

haha j/k!!

hilarious "apology."

g e o f f (gcannon), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 05:26 (twenty-one years ago)

thank you, MST3K, for reminding us all of its majesty.

Another Allnighter (sexyDancer), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 13:23 (twenty-one years ago)

she was probably cuter than Nike

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 13:26 (twenty-one years ago)

But that's punk rock you see.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 13:26 (twenty-one years ago)

When I read this thread title, I thought it meant they were switching to a Replacements album cover rip off campaign.

Let It Be Do It

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 13:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I want to know how Nike disposes of a "digital flyer". I hope they do it in an ethical and ecologically-friendly manner.

Andrew Norman, Tuesday, 28 June 2005 13:51 (twenty-one years ago)

YAY! My fuck Nike thread CHANGED THE WORLD!!!!!!!

MEGACORPORTATIONS BOW BEFORE THE POWER OF MY PEDANTIC WHINING!!!!

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 14:21 (twenty-one years ago)

My wife has that Emily t-shirt! I wonder what Dischord think about that, do they even know about it?

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 14:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Not really the same thing though. A play on words with a design that in no way rips off either Minor Threat or Dischord.

Ben Dot (1977), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 14:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Um, that's not quite true...

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 14:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha that SHIRT is ripping off the "Salad Days" single.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 15:27 (twenty-one years ago)

It still isn't the same thing though.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 15:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Or rather it is the same thing, but it matters less.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 15:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Ian was objecting to the Nike association specifically, not to appropriation in general, even for commercial exploitation. PROBABLY objected to because Nike's production practices.
I can't absolutely say for certain, but I doubt the Emily cartoonist enslaves children to make her comic strips.

Fugazi doesn't produce or licence their band t-shirts - but they say it's okay if fans make and sell them. So it's not about Dischord not getting paid.

Mike Dixn (Mike Dixon), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 15:38 (twenty-one years ago)

i had a dream not too long ago where i was Anakin Skywalker going to destroy the jedi temple, but the temple was the dischord offices...

i like that evens record tho.

JD from CDepot, Tuesday, 28 June 2005 16:23 (twenty-one years ago)

xpost.
you'd be wrong about that, mike. emily is a real little girl, and the cartoonist keeps her locked in a basement and feeds her fish heads. roly poly fish heads.

your programming is coming along nicely!

There are a few bugs, but this was a first pass, so I try.
