Despite this thread:

The new Billy Corgan single is a cover of the Bee Gees "To Love Somebody" featuring Robert Smith on backing vocals

I want to gush on and on about this Bee Gees song.

Who did your favorite version?

Umm, the Bee Gees? (for once)

1. The Bee Gees' original
2. Nina Simone
3. Michael Bolton (probably my favorite of his singles)

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 14:52 (twenty years ago)

Firewater recorded one (with new, somewhat nasty lyrics) but sadly never released it.

People should just stop bothering to mention Robert Smith being on that cover on the Corgan record. You can barely notice anyone else besides Corgan.

Good cover, though. I like the dreaminess of the production.

I like James Carr's version the best.

edd s hurt (ddduncan), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 14:57 (twenty years ago)

I like Janis Joplin's version best.

Drew Daniel (Drew Daniel), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 14:58 (twenty years ago)

I like James Carr's version the best.
Me too. I also like the Al Green version of "How Can You Mend A Broken Heart" the best.

Robert Smith is audible, if just. Great version.

My favorite version nobody else knows about (I think) -- Gallon Drunk, on one of their later albums. Really fine.

Has anybody done a version of "Words"? That's probably my favorite Bee Gees song (next to "Nights on Broadway").

Michael Costello (MichaelCostello1), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 17:40 (twenty years ago)

One of those British boy-bands -- Westlife or Boyzone? -- covered "Words," pretty much note-for-note replicating the original.

Need more covers of "I Can't See Nobody" and "You Win Again."

I never realized how many great versions there are of this one!

Kind of liking this version:

Also my whole life I've thought the lyric was

In my prayers
I see your face again

and not

In my brain
I see your face again

The Brothers Gibb strike again1

Wish Jimmy Somerville would take another shot at this

I love Rod Stewart's version with Booker T. & The MG's. Insane he left in the vaults until his first box set. Sounds great there, and the mix on the deluxe reissue of Atlantic Crossing with the additional strings is great too, maybe even better.

not the first to say Gallon Drunk but will go for that too, I remember a review saying it sounded like he'd broken into your house and was whispering it into your ear while you slept

That live version from Nina Simone is fantastic. It’s a such a good song. How the artist covers it is like a distillation of their sound.

Didn’t see Roberta Flack’s devastating version posted so here it is. It soundtracked the scene in season 1 of The Americans where Gregory goes out to his death.
