Codeine vs Low

Who do you like more. Me? I don't know. I just bought a Codeine album (on cd, geezz!) and my dad was asking me why I bought it. He likes Low more. I bought it because I do like them (not my favorite, but yeah) and Chirs Brokaw is in it.

LOW

Gear! (Ill Cajun Gunsmith) (Gear!), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 16:13 (twenty-one years ago)

LOW!

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 16:13 (twenty-one years ago)

CODEINE...by a million miles

MELVINS + BREWS = YR NEIGHBOR (ddb), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 16:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Codeine has never bored me to tears like Low has.

Ellsworth M. Toohey (Grodd), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 16:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Low is the correct answer. Codeine are good. But they're nothing alike

kyle (akmonday), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 16:22 (twenty-one years ago)

codeine vs blow

Bruce Bwned (Matt Chesnut), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 16:24 (twenty-one years ago)

They both put you to sleep, eventually. I think that makes them alike.

Aja (aja), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 16:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Codeine by a TRILLION miles. Seriously, no contest.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 16:26 (twenty-one years ago)

It was the best project Chris Brokaw was ever involved with as far as I (a pretty big fan of his early material!) am concerned.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 16:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Chris is a great guy. I love his solo stuff too.

Aja (aja), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 16:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Which record was it? I prefer "Barely Real".

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 16:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I think he's a better guitarist than drummer, but it's hard to tell because he was supposed to be drumming that slow.

Which record was it? I prefer "Barely Real".
-- gygax! (gygax0...)

That's the one I just bought.

Andrzej B. (Andrzej B.), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 16:35 (twenty-one years ago)

"Barely Real" is so much better than "Frigid Stars" and "The White Birch"

On the strength of "Barely Real" alone, I would take Codeine over Low.

Brooker Buckingham (Brooker B), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 16:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I've never seen "The Whit Birch". What year did that come out?

Aja (aja), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 16:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I think "White Birch" came out in 94 on Sub-Pop.

Brooker Buckingham (Brooker B), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 16:40 (twenty-one years ago)

"Barely Real" is so much better than "Frigid Stars" and "The White Birch"

NO! Frigid Stars LP is flawless.

I still listen to Codeine but I lost interest in Low circa Curtain Hits the Cast. Codeine is way better.

mcd (mcd), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 16:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, Low has this voluminous catalog, and I just don't have the wherewithal to plow through it to find the gems. I didn't mind "The Great Destroyer" but I don't think I'd go out of my way to hear any of their stuff.

Brooker Buckingham (Brooker B), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 16:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Secret Name is pretty awesome.

Gear! (Ill Cajun Gunsmith) (Gear!), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 16:50 (twenty-one years ago)

There's a band called Narrows (or maybe The Narrows) from the PacNW that is doing the Codeine thing these days. Really great band, I was happy to hear that they exist. There's a record with a skull on the cover it that I like.

mcd (mcd), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 16:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Has anyone heard Codeine's cover of "Atmosphere" by Joy Division?

Aja (aja), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 16:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Ned to Thread

*befuddled* I like both v. much but to be honest I hadn't listened to Codeine in years, so I ripped the discs and sold them back earlier this year. I could never see myself doing that with Low.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 17:00 (twenty-one years ago)

AAHHH!!!!

Aja (aja), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 17:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Search: the Codeine track on the Sub Pop Peel Sessions cd, "Broken Hearted Wine".

mcd (mcd), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 17:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Based on hearing Frigid Stars 2-3 times and The Great Destroyer once... Codeine!

CODEINE THE BAND

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 17:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Sub-question: Is Idaho comparable? From what I hear they're also 90s indie slowcore?

sleep (sleep), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 17:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks gygax.

Aja (aja), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 17:23 (twenty-one years ago)

i think the white birch and frigid stars are better than a lot of low albums, but NOT If I Could LIve In Hope, Secret Name, Songs for a Dead Pilot, or Curtain Hits the Cast.

kyle (akmonday), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 17:29 (twenty-one years ago)

gotta go with Low for me

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 17:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Sub-question: Is Idaho comparable? From what I hear they're also 90s indie slowcore?

Idaho's Three Sheets to the Wind was pretty good. I think Ned did some of the reviews for this band on allmusic. You can usually find their records for rather cheap.

mcd (mcd), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 17:42 (twenty-one years ago)

the first idaho album (Year after Year) and the Palms ep would be the most comparable; the caroline albums were a lot louder (though no less good). there is something good about all of their albums but I think Year after Year and Alas are their best (and most like say, Codeine or Low, though not really)

kyle (akmonday), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 19:10 (twenty-one years ago)

i never understood why idaho were never a bigger deal. they're closer to a red house painters or american music club than low or codeine, i think, but people always lump all of these bands together anyway. you can't go wrong with three sheets to the wind, alas, hearts of palm, or levitate. their music gets kind of same-y, but that's the worst i'll say about it.

oh, and low over codeine.

a spectator bird (a spectator bird), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 19:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Codeine by a bazillion miles.

Ian John50n (orion), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 19:18 (twenty-one years ago)

actually who really, really, really sounds like Idaho is Pedro the Lion. Anyone who likes Pedro shourl really listen to Year after Year.

kyle (akmonday), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 19:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Low by a bazillion miles.

astronautagogo (astronautagogo), Saturday, 12 August 2006 23:30 (nineteen years ago)

two years pass...

I'm feeling nostalgic suddenly, but I've forgotten or disowned much of this stuff. OMG, Idaho! American Music Club! Early-mid nineties slow rock : what's your take??

u s steel, Monday, 16 February 2009 02:56 (seventeen years ago)

The White Birch was the first Sub Pop record I ever bought. It goes without saying that the shop where I picked it up closed several years ago.

post-schadenfreude (fukasaku tollbooth), Monday, 16 February 2009 11:19 (seventeen years ago)

been listening to a lot of codeine lately. frigid stars hasn't held up so well, but white birch still sounds great. shame that immerwahr hasn't gone on to do something else

electrodribble sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 16 February 2009 11:25 (seventeen years ago)

electrodribble sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 16 February 2009 11:45 (seventeen years ago)

he IS one of the best vocalist out there for sure.
perfect match between voice and music style i'd say

Zeno, Monday, 16 February 2009 12:05 (seventeen years ago)

lyrically too

white birch beautifully engineered.. one of my favourite drum sounds of all time

electrodribble sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 16 February 2009 12:09 (seventeen years ago)

i like white birch, but i guess it sounds too clean for me, after i got used tothe louder and more chaotic Frigid Stars, which will always be my favourite

Zeno, Monday, 16 February 2009 12:15 (seventeen years ago)

From Wikipedia:

List of artists who can be considered slowcore

Bon Iver
Carissa's Wierd (sic)
Death Cab For Cutie (early albums)
Pedro the Lion
Shearwater
Elliott Smith

ilxor, Monday, 16 February 2009 20:44 (seventeen years ago)

Low by about a million miles, tho that is to be expected b/c Low is one of my all-time favorites. I'll still rep hard for Codeine, as well as Labradford, Bedhead & others. I never cared much for Idaho. There was an Ann Arbor-based band called Flashpapr that did this kind of stuff rather well.

2 ears + 1 ❤ (Pillbox), Monday, 16 February 2009 20:51 (seventeen years ago)

the thing about low that a lot of people don't seem remark about it how weird and sorta confrontational they are in a way. sparhawk seems like a pretty dark dude.

Yo, I just copped dat brand new Manity Kane cd. (M@tt He1ges0n), Monday, 16 February 2009 20:54 (seventeen years ago)

Drowned in Sound is doing a week's worth of articles on slowcore bands, starting today.

the thing about low that a lot of people don't seem remark about it how weird and sorta confrontational they are in a way. sparhawk seems like a pretty dark dude.

Yeah, I think the tension between this and the domesticity of the band is what gives them a lot of depth other so-called slowcore bands struggle to match. I like Shearwater from the upthread Wikipedia list, too, but I don't think of them as slowcore at all, unless Talk Talk are slowcore!

Oh, and last time I saw Low, Pedro the Lion opened for them.

Lostandfound, Tuesday, 17 February 2009 00:08 (seventeen years ago)

Oh, anyway, Low over Codeine every time!
