tracks that potentially could have been huge, if they were promoted better

Three songs come to mind that I know would have been massively huge, if Josh Homme's PR dudes had not been out of their minds.

"Feel Good Hit Of The Summer" - Despite how stupid anyone may think the lyrics are, this song is catchy as hell, and it's exactly what modern rock radio needed in 2000. But instead, the labels must have figured the kids wouldn't enjoy it, considering the climate of radio at the time. Or maybe they were concerned that the FCC may have a field day over it, except The Marshall Mathers LP was released only a month before Rated R, so they were obviously pre-occupied. Could have been HUGE, I say.

"First It Giveth" - I still love "Go With The Flow," but I was slightly shocked that it was chosen over "First It Giveth" as the 2nd single, and even more shocked that it was hardly played on the radio at all after it was released as the third single from Songs For The Deaf. What's the deal?

"I Only Want You" - This song easily could have dominated Top 40 radio last summer, and I know this because I worked in family entertainment during that time. I had a mixtape that I would blast from a little stereo, and whenever this song would come on, the kids loved it. One kid who couldn't have been older than 9 even asked me who the band was, and I had to tell him "Eagles Of Death Metal" 2 or 3 times before he could figure out what I was saying.

And I know all three of these could have been huge because they're all better songs than "Little Sister," which if I'm not mistaken was a "Modern Rock" #1.

Unsolved Child Murder, whilst not really a possible huge track, was cursed by the fact that Jamie Bulger killing happened around the time of it's release, prompting it to be renamed the Back With The Killer EP. Not much of an improvement really.

bg (creamolafoam), Friday, 1 July 2005 14:10 (twenty-one years ago)

This post makes me realize that I have no idea what actually was a hit, given how much I've been reliant on filesharing to the exclusion of any other means of being exposing to music. Blah.

Pop charts make for interesting trivia.

As for my contribution to thread... half the songs off of Moby Grape's first album.

Rob Uptight (Rob Uptight), Friday, 1 July 2005 17:00 (twenty-one years ago)

The self-titled second album by "The Glands" from 2000 could have been a breakthrough indie hit a la The Shins. But they were on a tiny label and it didn't get the exposure it deserved. It remains one of the most overlooked indie albums ever.

Hits from it could have been: Swim, Straight Down, Lovetown and When I Laugh.

And Outfit by the Drive-By Truckers could have been a massive massive hit had it been properly released.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Friday, 1 July 2005 17:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I never understood why they never released "Rooster" or "Bowtie" from Speakerboxx, both of which I think blow "Roses" out of the water. In fact, I'll say it straight out, I think Speakerboxx was actually the more consistent and rewarding of the two albums.
