(this is v. tough/I love all three (deal; gordon; thayil) a whole lot, but deal takes it...)

I guess I'd go with whichever one has bigger tits.

god I didn't know how long I've been waiting to sb someone.

I love kim gordon ,she's a major part of one of my all time fave bands.
however, deal wins because her songs and voice move me more emotionally than any sy song could.

nakamura, Thursday, 7 October 2010 17:27 (thirteen years ago) link

god I didn't know how long I've been waiting to sb someone.

I KEED I KEED! ...Although it's worth pointing out that references to the superiority of physical attributes to talent happen to litter this thread with little crowd objection. I guess it's legitimate in our society to say "I like the one with the prettier face" or the one who looks more like a MILF-y English teacher but not to say "I like the one with the bigger tits." Why is that? They don't seem all that different to me.

Lazarus Niles-Burnham (res), Thursday, 7 October 2010 18:40 (thirteen years ago) link

fair enough. I do think Deal is the hottest, but I also love her songs and her voice the most. I'm just a HUGE stan.

one year passes...

http://www.collectorsweekly.com/articles/kim-gordons-clothing-sale/

i'm kind of amazed that Kim would so this but maybe it's just wrong of me to assume that she's wealthy. maybe she isn't but surely.... i mean there's no mention in the article of good causes or charity, not that there necessarily would be. it's just in the article where she mentions that she "didn’t want to go the eBay route". it just seems bizarre to me that Kim hawking her old clothes on ebay would even be a possibility. if she's not hard up i thought she would be giving this stuff away.

"We just priced each item in terms of what it was, more so than who it belongs to. I don’t think Kim was really interested in that.”

considering that you're pricing a second hand Jane Mayle dress for $425 i kind of beg to differ on this.

jed_, Sunday, 2 September 2012 13:22 (eleven years ago) link

she wore a lot of really flashy clothes onstage that i can't imagine she had much use for in her daily life, so more than anything else i take this as a further indication that SY's touring days may really be behind them.

i can see some ilxors digging the horsebladder stuff.

scott seward, Sunday, 2 September 2012 14:00 (eleven years ago) link

and speaking of touring i really like the stuff kim has been doing with bill nace. i started a thread for it but nobody cared.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MH9oOOy2kfQ

think both thurston and kim are doing more interesting things now.

scott seward, Sunday, 2 September 2012 14:04 (eleven years ago) link

i am gonna see thurston's new band next week, or the week after, i forget.
i don't care much about it but since half that band is friends-of-friends i am willing to dig it.
i loved sonic youth when i was a teen. favorite band.
but i thought when i saw thurston touring behind his last solo record, before i heard the record, i was disappointed at how predictable the songs were -- that same clanging guitar noise in the third quarter of the tune. just... strange. so if he's been re-invigorated or challenged by this chelsea light moving thing then all the better.

i have heard nothing kim's doing with nace -- saw thurston & nace play last year and i was pretty boring.

one dis leads to another (ian), Monday, 3 September 2012 05:45 (eleven years ago) link

know what you mean about the clang/drone thing being predictable but the solo thurston show i saw at lincoln center last winter was cool

i'm kind of amazed that Kim would so this but maybe it's just wrong of me to assume that she's wealthy. maybe she isn't but surely

she has a kid going to college, she's divorcing and SY were pretty inactive for awhile before the split. damn straight she needs money

seems like a good idea

tylerw, Friday, 14 September 2012 22:35 (eleven years ago) link

four years pass...

these days I've changed my mind to Deal. Those first couple Breeders records + the Amps' "Pacer" are unique and underrated

Οὖτις, Monday, 19 June 2017 21:47 (six years ago) link

wonder what Deal's "Girl In A Band"-style memoir would be like

tylerw, Monday, 19 June 2017 22:02 (six years ago) link

I read some recent interview with her where she was being v forthright about aging (not married, no kids, caring for sick/invalid parents) and it really made me feel for her. Plus the sobriety angle. Her and Gordon had very different lives.

Οὖτις, Monday, 19 June 2017 22:12 (six years ago) link

this thread is kinda gross though, reading over it

I think there is something highly unusual, maybe even unique, about Deal's role in rock culture and indie rock culture. To go from what was essentially a second-fiddle role in a band that wasn't quite that huge to something where she was the leader/songwriter/singer of a female-dominated group that surpassed her old band in popularity and cultural ubiquity by virtue of her strange combo of bubblegum pop instincts and love of noise/distortion but then there's this grim underside of drug abuse and isolation and it all goes to shit and now no one talks about her, she's like a forgotten one-hit wonder (whereas Gordon still has that dialed-in NY art/fashion/media scene to sustain her and also had the family experience)

Deal

Unchanging Window (Ross), Monday, 19 June 2017 23:13 (six years ago) link

Deal is an icon for me. I admire Gordon a lot, but from a distance. Deal's writing, voice, persona all connect very directly. There are days when she's my all-time favourite songwriter - golden pop sensibility shot through with chaos and darkness. Find me another song as tight-and-loose as London Song or Sinister Foxx, or as offhand menacing as Doe. She's truly unique in an unassuming way.

attention vampire (MatthewK), Monday, 19 June 2017 23:29 (six years ago) link

Her and Gordon had very different lives.
they are very different people! imagine that!

this thread is kinda gross though, reading over it
no surprise here either

i identify with deal about 1000x more (as a person) but it was fun to read gordon's memoir just to see what life was like for her

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Monday, 19 June 2017 23:45 (six years ago) link

don't count out the later breeders albums, there's good stuff on mountain battles and especially title tk too. the amps album is probably her pinnacle though.

na (NA), Tuesday, 20 June 2017 01:14 (six years ago) link

Title TK is my fave. And Pod of course. I enjoy Pacer but it's slightly too loose and unfocused (sounds a lot boozier than TTK).

Fuck Thurston

bodacious ignoramus, Tuesday, 20 June 2017 01:45 (six years ago) link

bodacious OTM

Unchanging Window (Ross), Tuesday, 20 June 2017 01:48 (six years ago) link

New Breeders album should hopefully be here soon! They finished recording it a while back.

cwkiii, Tuesday, 20 June 2017 01:49 (six years ago) link

Thurston Moore pretty much turning into the Sonic Youth-loving Jason Bateman character from Juno is one of the more bizarre things to have happened in recent years. Thurston still gets to hang out and make lists of his favorite albums on the cool websites too.

nomar, Tuesday, 20 June 2017 01:50 (six years ago) link

Her and Gordon had very different lives.
they are very different people! imagine that!

Yeah well I didnt start this thread or invite the comparison, i just wanted to talk about kim deal and she doesn't have a dedicated thread.

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 20 June 2017 01:58 (six years ago) link

I'm loving the mini-revival for Pacer here. I feel like a lot of Gordon's SY songs are underrated but def Deal has connected to more profoundly; I like-to-love every single album of hers. Shakes & MatthewK & La Lechera all otm here

the rockists' red glare (Drugs A. Money), Tuesday, 20 June 2017 04:05 (six years ago) link

Pacer's one of my fav five or so albums, probably. Always love listening to it. Only picked it up by chance, Back when vinyl wasn't selling much and The Amps had about 10% of the name recognition of The Breeders (iirc Deal once said not just calling it the third Breeders album was her biggest career regret).

albvivertine, Tuesday, 20 June 2017 06:48 (six years ago) link

haha how was that not the first post on this thread

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 20 June 2017 15:43 (six years ago) link

"Bragging Party" looms over all other songs of the 90s, in my imagination.

geoffreyess, Tuesday, 20 June 2017 15:58 (six years ago) link

otm that song is unbelievable.

tylerw, Tuesday, 20 June 2017 16:00 (six years ago) link

haha it's so good my band sampled it

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 20 June 2017 16:03 (six years ago) link

lol it was never clear to me if she was singing "memorized breaths" (as a ref to the harmonies in the song) or "memorized breasts" (which is also funny)

all the static noise on the vocal obscures the phrasing

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 20 June 2017 16:04 (six years ago) link

so I guess I need this Amps album, huh?

sleeve, Tuesday, 20 June 2017 16:06 (six years ago) link

yes!

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 20 June 2017 16:06 (six years ago) link

to quote the album itself, it's full of... mythic noise

geoffreyess, Tuesday, 20 June 2017 16:09 (six years ago) link

I've always been a big Pod fan but somehow the Amps thing was never on my radar

sleeve, Tuesday, 20 June 2017 16:16 (six years ago) link

Deal's probably otm that releasing the album under a different name from the Breeders was a colossal mistake. You'd think that a follow-up to a huge album would've gotten more attention but it really kind of disappeared.

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 20 June 2017 16:20 (six years ago) link

yeah, I'm a perfect example! already a fan, ready to hear more, missed it completely

sleeve, Tuesday, 20 June 2017 16:22 (six years ago) link

Kim Deal is my favorite '90s musician, i think everything she touched that decade is gold and persona-wise she is just really appealing and admirable imo.

nomar, Tuesday, 20 June 2017 16:23 (six years ago) link

It's always a pleasure to listen to Kim Deal sing.
It's never a pleasure to listen to Kim Gordon sing.

Deal, then.

another point of comparison:
Amps and Free Kitten full-lengths both released 1995 around the same time, I got both, guess which one I held onto

i just went through ohio and played a show in my hometown and this very short gbv cover warms my heart because it is so ohio and so of its time
and her voice, always

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Tuesday, 20 June 2017 16:45 (six years ago) link

haha thx for that, never seen it before

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 20 June 2017 16:49 (six years ago) link

i still think deal and pollard should've made at least four albums together (i guess they had a falling out?)
