I hear that the Cabaret Laws have killed a lot of the options. I go to plenty of live shows, but they tend not to be too dance-oriented. And the ones that could be, people don't dance. Damn NYC.

And watch for stuff happening at the Frying Pan, the docked boat at Pier 63 on the West Side.
Is MisShapes a dance night? Anybody?
And I'm sure Harlem and East Brooklyn have their share of spots, but I don't know them.

― Candicissima (candicissima), Monday, 25 July 2005 19:41 (twenty years ago)
yes, but it's not for us.
Suzy, in defense of House music, while I'm sure outsiders would say it all sounds the same, it runs the gamut. For instance, when I play House music, you'd swear it was a New Wave party. And for most house people I know, trance and drum and bass are the ENEMY.
you could start following the nyhappenings mailing list for suggestions:
http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/nyhappenings/
as well as the Beyond Events calendar
[email protected]
There's a few more but it really depends what kind of music you like. At the very least, the above tend not to focus on cover-charge type places.
But at the risk of sounding obvious, Lit on fridays is pretty eclectic musically, often suprisingly great, is always crowded and people dance. It may be the worst place on the planet, but it's dependable.
If you hop on that L train over to Brooklyn, you have some great options like the aforementioned Capones, among others.
― Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Monday, 25 July 2005 19:55 (twenty years ago)
Although I-D magazine gave us a write up claiming Paradise Garage-esque music, that's really only the half (Dan, didn't Vice say 'they play House music'? - the door guy said to me that we play Techno and Freestyle, yet I only own a handful of techno records).
Beat Club is 80's Beats, which may be anything from my beloved Miami Bass to Acid House to Italo to, well, a plethora of 80's hits ala Electrinc Avenue and Rapsberry Beret.
AllDisco is Paradise Garage, Space Disco, and 80's Boogie, among other obscure-ish Disco.
We used to keep the themes seperate, but now we don't care...so if you like anything above and some 80's Hip-Hop too, Capone's on Fridays and Saturdays are worth the L Train ride.
There is ALWAYS a dance party there Fridays and Saturdays, although some nights is does start kinda late. We try to get it going at 10, but the earliest things pick up is like 11, and some nights it'll be 1am before the floor fills up.
― PappaWheelie (PappaWheelie), Monday, 25 July 2005 20:12 (twenty years ago)
I mean, I know /one/ of us was in Vice, but I didn't know the night was mentioned.
― Rob Upt1ght, Monday, 25 July 2005 20:20 (twenty years ago)
And there has been no techno played at Capones, though as you know very well Joe, to most people, it's ALL techno.
― Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Monday, 25 July 2005 20:29 (twenty years ago)
It's funny b/c that's what prompted this thread. Every fucking Friday night I end up there, but the music is always kind of obvious and not that much fun to dance to. i like the mood downstairs, but the music is usually so lame that I have a tough time getting into it (ie feel like of embarassed that I'm dancing to it). I love that there is no cover, though.
Thanks to all that have linked me up to places. All I really want is a place that plays lots of 80s/New Wave stuff that I haven't heard played to death. Looks like there are a lot of good suggestions here, though.
― Suzy Creemcheese (SuzyCreemcheese), Monday, 25 July 2005 20:30 (twenty years ago)
Still, the underlying sentiment in my reponse was 'house/techno is in the eye of the beholder sometimes.' Vice saying Capone's plays House music when we're actually playing Patrice Rushen and Shannon seems like a huge stretch to us music people, but if the door guy (the one you're friends with) thinks this too...
When I was playing Patrick Cowley at Rothko, some girl came up and thanked me for playing House music.
I have a feeling Suzy knows the difference, but I do want to put a disclaimer out there that some reading this might think we're a House/Techno night. I mean, sure, I play some Juan Atkins and some Hot Mix 5, but I don't dwell on either. I'm more apt to play three 2 Live Crew songs or three Moroder songs than I am to play anything else in bulk.

HIYO! JDH, Mike Simonetti, and Michael Goodstein to thread.
― PappaWheelie (PappaWheelie), Monday, 25 July 2005 20:33 (twenty years ago)
we're a pretty fucking eclectic night, in our eyes.
chance are you'll hear good dance music from the mid 70s to the late 80s more or less, chance are you'll recognize 1/3 of the songs, sometimes less, sometimes more. Check http://www.alldisco.net for a basic idea of the djs and the "theme" of the night.
no, no, no keep them AWAY! Thing is suzy, Lit downstairs is different depending on who's djing. Thing is the nights I've done it, I start out more new wave and fun and by the end when everyone's wasted and will dance to anything, that's when I start playing the stuff you probably hate...and that's when you show up!
― Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Monday, 25 July 2005 20:36 (twenty years ago)
Like I said, I'll do my research w/ the links/MessageBoards/MailingLists, do it up on Friday, and report back. There have been quite a few genres mentioned here that I'm unfamiliar with, so maybe those would be good places to start.
As long as there are no fucking Def Leopard/Motley Crue/G'n'R iron-a-thons, or as long as "Boys and Girls" isn't the highlight of the night, i'll probaby be happy.

Dan -- one of my friends told me some crazy story about getting laid on a trip to new york and there was something about a bar with pizza and I said.... AHA!!!

Not to say we haven't gotten pretty decadent at times, didn't someone have sex one saturday in the club in plain view of everyone? For those that don't know, it's just a large bar, not some dark club.
And hey, even the residents get some action! Right, Rob?

but ummm, seriously Ian, where is this self-congratulatory, other then the obvious joke "sometimes people get laid at Alldisco"? I just re-read the thread and there's nothing more then an honest appraisal of the kind of music that is played. But thanks for contributing, really.

the old gf has been doing Happy Endings on wednesdays but I haven't made it yet so I can't say how that is. That place is usually pretty crowded and has a few regular hip parties, Spencer Product's We Bite on tuesdays and Mattie and Gabe from the Rapture have been doing stuff on Fridays with the guys who do the No Ordinary Monkey parties, neither of which I've been to. I actually don't go to dance parties anymore, because I go to sleep.
