My friend just got a job at this site. It's pretty entertaining. I recommend taking the quiz.

...That just became my favourite website, though the quiz messed up after I finished it. It's no great thing that Pink's Jewish, yikes!

Jay Watts III (jaywatts), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 16:15 (twenty years ago)

best website ever!

cutty (mcutt), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 16:28 (twenty years ago)

There's an ILM reference in Doree Shafrir's "The Yeshiva of Indie Rock" article. Anyways, this website is spectacular - I wasn't expecting much out of it from the graphics, it looked like it had just been put up, but the content's some substantial stuff. I was hoping for more Bar Mitzvah photos, though.

Jay Watts III (jaywatts), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 17:30 (twenty years ago)

I only got 15/20 on the quiz, and I wouldn't have known that Pink was Jewish before reading on this thread (Alecia Moore? Doesn't sound so Jewish).

Jay OTM about the Bar Mitzvah photos -- I nearly lost my shit at the prospect of Jonathan Richman's BM album.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 18:18 (twenty years ago)

There's a bar mitzvah photograph of Chris Seligman from Stars on the filing cabinet across from me, I'm going to scan it and send it in!

A couple of friends and I were looking at a list of Jewish celebrities and personalities, and it's amazing the level of Jewish assimilation into British culture... I can't recall off-hand any that were on the list right now, but there were plenty of surprises. Marianne Faithful's Jewishness I recall from reading that "Hammer of the Gods" Stones' biography a couple of years back.

I can't believe this thread isn't sitting at the top. Conspiracy of silence?

is robbie robertson jewish?

cutty (mcutt), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 21:58 (twenty years ago)

Yes, his mother was Jewish and his father was Cherokee or Mohawk, I think? Details in the Challah Fame!

Frontman Ira Kaplan, who has been called "the Jewish Jimi Hendrix," brings his Jersey hometown covers by Jews ranging from Neil Diamond to the Ramones

I have never heard anyone call Ira Kaplan "the Jewish Jimi Hendrix".

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 22:09 (twenty years ago)

Isn't Lenny Kravitz "the Jewish Jimi Hendrix?"

Deadheadism is a lot like Judiasm. Fans of the Grateful Dead, like observant Jews, glean spiritual meaning from the intensive study of their chosen texts: in this case, song lyrics.

OMG WTF

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 22:12 (twenty years ago)

Yes, I noticed a couple of Dead/Phish references, and even (gasp) notes of praise, scattered throughout the site. Someone had an eventful college life, obviously.

Jay Watts III (jaywatts), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 22:21 (twenty years ago)

Al Kooper! Mike Bloomfield!

If Izzy wrote this, I'm sure she's just being funny in her unique Izzy way.

I think part of the conceit of the site is just to stretch the definition of what's Jewish in rock as much as possible. For example, some of the band descriptions mention that the MANAGER was Jewish.

Hurting (Hurting), Thursday, 28 July 2005 03:12 (twenty years ago)

hey we're an indie rock discussion board. who knew?

i've seen this site before. i got the question wrong about lenny kravitz being jewish because i thought it was a trick question (non-jewish matrilineage and all that). but then i realized that this site was taking a lot of liberties with its definitions.

Well, Rabbi Nahman would agree with you, but on the other hand Rabbi Zalman says otherwise. I on the other hand must disagree with both, for why would Izzy say 'from the intensive study of their chosen texts'? Clearly it is because the Jews are the Chosen people. Therefore, it is clear that the text is studied by those fit for the task: for does not a magnet desire another magnet? Does not the lamb yearn to play with the lamb?

moley, Thursday, 28 July 2005 11:00 (twenty years ago)

Secretly, the lamb yearns to lay down with the lion. Very torrid.
