Astreja - Music from Davos

Now of course Thom Jurek invariably veers off into apeshit statements. But I found this on AMG and ordered it immediately, seeing as I'm an irrepressible Sofia Gubaidulina enthusiast. Plus the notion of an ex-Soviet Union avant-improv group reuniting for an impossible concert speaks for itself. And really, what can I say? All that No-Neck Blues Band, "New Weird America" or whatever-type stuff just doesn't have a leg to stand on. It's one thing when a bunch of suburban kids arrange an hour of ur-percussion spiked with "intuitive" guitar shards. It's another when experienced musicians (among them, two important late 20th century composers) aim for a similar ritualistic atmosphere and produce music deserving of overused adjectives like "indefinable." Or insert preferred pre-verbal metaphor here. No really, how the fuck does anyone achieve these effects without coming off as either a) insular or b) new-agey? Has anyone else heard this?
