I've heard it -- it's pretty good.

Mark (MarkR), Thursday, 28 July 2005 14:32 (twenty years ago)

What is this, a live record?

I'd really like to hear any MoM live stuff, and especially interested in any tweaks they may have made to the material from the last album.

fandango (fandango), Thursday, 28 July 2005 14:35 (twenty years ago)

Yes, live record, out on Sonig in the fall. One CD, heavy on material from last three albums (plus a very nice version of "Frosch"). Adheres closely to the sets of the last tour, obviously. What has struck me so far is how "live" it sounds -- definitely not the kind of live record that was heavily sweetened in the studio. It almost sounds like an audience recording.

Anyone know which show(s) in particular was/were sourced for this?

Sounds promising in any case.

donut ferry (donut), Thursday, 28 July 2005 16:34 (twenty years ago)

From what i've read it was sourced from like 400 hours of tape from the 2004 tour.

MoM was one of, if not the best shows I saw in 2004. Looking forward to hearing this.

grauzone, Thursday, 28 July 2005 17:53 (twenty years ago)

Has anyone else been disappointed with how MoM's sound has developed since Dodo Nishiki has become their putative frontman (at least in concert)?

electric derby, Thursday, 28 July 2005 18:40 (twenty years ago)

Never saw them without him -- you think the live show was better before?

Mark (MarkR), Thursday, 28 July 2005 18:44 (twenty years ago)

Oh it was way better, esp. around Autodidakter. Saw them play last year and it hurt me, it was baaaaaaad...really forced, just a bad rock band really. But then the last album was crap too.

Omar (Omar), Thursday, 28 July 2005 19:00 (twenty years ago)

fyi - "audioditacker" is gonna be reissued soon.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 28 July 2005 19:06 (twenty years ago)

I saw both forms of the band, and I can't disagree more.

As the two piece, they were charming and "adorable" behind a table of gear when I saw them open for Stereolab eight years ago, and they certainly had the crowd hopping.

But the first time I saw them with Dodo, it was a great new step. I wasn't sure what to think of Andi Toma's new "rock face", but I think it fits the recent direction of MoM (i.e. Niun Ninnung and after) more than the previous stuff, anyway. Jan is really great now in that, despite his not-yet-complete grasp of English, he tries to crack jokes and comes off even more charismatic for it.

donut ferry (donut), Thursday, 28 July 2005 19:09 (twenty years ago)

then again, I think their latest is their best so far.. so what do i know?

donut ferry (donut), Thursday, 28 July 2005 19:11 (twenty years ago)

Well, different strokes 'n all that. I like Dodo's drumming fine and he's got more charisma on stage than his stone-faced teutonic brethren. And I admire/appreciate their attempt to make live music of their mostly electronic material -- I don't think I can take another static "concert" by Autechre and their ilk. But the songs where his voice is a lead instrument do next to nothing for me. They're a kind of wet pseudo-funk, with none of the propulsion of the duo's best stuff.

electric derby, Thursday, 28 July 2005 19:21 (twenty years ago)

Dodo's voice was hardly ever the lead when I saw them live. I mean, i guess technically it was on songs like Actionist Respoke, but it was pratically treated as just another instrument. It was wonderful to hear Jan take 2 second snippets of something he just said, do interesting things like de-essing them, and consequently make them the backbone of the next banger they played. They were loads of fun and i'm very interested to hear what this album will sound like. I mean, yay! for energetic, entertaining, electronic live shows

one month passes...
MoM were scheduled to play Detroit on October 30th (via the TrillJockey site, and the site for the Magic Stick), but now it ain't listed anywhere. Anyone out there knows whatzup?

peepee (peepee), Monday, 12 September 2005 03:01 (twenty years ago)

I'll try this again.

peepee (peepee), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 00:40 (twenty years ago)

I can't help you with that I'm afraid but I am anticipating the live record an awful lot at the moment. hope you find your show...

hmmm (hmmm), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 08:50 (twenty years ago)

three weeks pass...
Okay it's out, I haven't got it yet... DO I NEED IT?

fandango (fandango), Friday, 7 October 2005 23:34 (twenty years ago)

thirteen years pass...

dudes and dudettes...this album rules. the combo of real instruments + electronics + sampling + Mousey gonzoness is pretty wild in a live setting. the complete remodeling of "Frosch" is worth the price alone. why don't they have more live albums!?
