Try this thread:

Suggest some soul albums for someone clueless about soul

thanks. But im not clueless. Well a bit. I like Whats going on, and Sam Cooke and Steve Wonder and Ottis Redding and Aretha and Marlena. But that Clarence song, and how it starts with nothing and ends with everything is what im lookin for. My thread title was not accurate perhaps so sorry. But thanks, that thread was useful.

You'd probably like "When Somethin' Is Wrong With My Baby" by Sam & Dave. Maybe also "Thin Line Between Love and Hate" by The Persuaders

I wouldn't fixate too much on the word "clueless" -- it's just a good thread, as you've observed.

As for slow-burning, Billy Paul comes to mind, as do the Dramatics.

The Dramatics' first record, "Whatcha See Is Whatcha Get," has some great slower stuff in "In the Rain" and "Thank You for Your Love". Plus the uptempo songs are incredible.

Dream Merchant by New Birth and I Do Love You by Billy Stewart (who also did the awesome Sitting In The Park) are a must.

Wow... Billy's Paul & Stewart are fantastic. But that Dramatic's debut is the best. Thanks! Also recently heard 'Outside Woman' by Betty Lavette and a song 'you cut up the clothes' (i think). Does anyone now much about these, did a search but found little. Thanks again for your help.
