Electronic music in Seattle

hey i'm in seattle for the weekend and have hit up a couple record stores in fremont but was wondering if anyone knew some local electronic groups to check out, prefereably in a house/electro/techno vein as opposed to downtempo or glitch, but if there's something i should check out from that vein as well let me know. Oh, and also where a good place to find cds/records of these groups would be. Thanks!

You couldn't have come at a better time, actually: the Capitol Hill Block Party has two days' worth of good local electronic shit on the Decibel Stage, starting tomorrow.

I'm sure that most if not all of the groups who have merch will be selling it there, too. $12/day, 12 hours per day, three other stages, you should be juuuust fine. :-)

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Saturday, 30 July 2005 00:19 (twenty years ago)

the ones I'd recommend most:

SATURDAY
8:00pm Jacob London (Classic / Doubledown Records)
9:00pm Lusine (Ghostly International / Hymen Records)

SUNDAY

JULY 31ST
7:00pm Caro (Orac Records)
8:00pm Codebase (Force Inc. / xO9 Music)

Caro's The Return of Caro is just out and especially terrific. very housey and languid w/o being cliched or bachelor-padlike. one of the best Kompakty things I've heard this year (Kompakt distributes his label, Orac).

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Saturday, 30 July 2005 00:21 (twenty years ago)

I'd also recommend Jerry Abstract's set right before as well.

http://orac.vu is your friend

Electronic record stores: Zion's Gate on Pike and 11th (which is one of the corners of where the block party will be. http://www.zionsgate.com -- has always been especially focused on reggae and dub, but now has more focus on all sorts of metal.. but still has a lot of genres of club dance music stuff to check out.)

There's also Platinum just down the street on Pike and Broadway.

You'll find lots of used house records at Everyday music on Broadway and Denny(?).. it's directly across the street from Dick's burgers.

Also, Easy Street has a smaller but cheaper section of stuff, CD and vinyl. (You can buy Ellen Allien's Thrills on 2-LP for $12.99 there right now, so while they have sealed stuff, it's much cheaper than most other places.). This is in Lower Queen Anne, just north of the Space Needle on Mercer and 1st Ave N.

And Jive Time in Capitol Hill is better for used dance vinyl than the Fremont one (although the Fremont one is great for any sort of rare rock records as well.) It's on Pine st. down the hill towards downtown from Broadway right near Area 51.

Sonic Boom's vinyl annex in Fremont is worth checking out too, but it looks like you've been there already. (That's the neighborhood I live in by the way. Hi! Have fun this weekend :) )

You'll be able to find Seattle techno folks' stuff at pretty much all of the above stores mentioned. Easy Street is especially pushing Caro, Lusine, Jeff Samuels, and Bruno Pronsato (aka Bobby Karate aka lots of other aliases)... and that new Ghostly International compilation that came out (and selling it REALLY cheap, $11.99 I think? Not all Seattle based, but I think Samuels and Lusine are in there.. I'm sure Dave Segal can correct me on all of the above)

donut ferry (donut), Saturday, 30 July 2005 00:36 (twenty years ago)

thanks for all the info i'll have to check these out. yeah i liked those shops over in fremont. lots of good selections for some decent prices. it's nice being able to listen to some of the used cds and vinyl before purchasing too. helps narrow down/broaden my list at each.

Barbara Jwanouskos, Saturday, 30 July 2005 05:26 (twenty years ago)

donut ferry and matos did a fine job of info providing. i would just add wall of sound to your itinerary of record shops; it's on pine between bellevue and melrose, about 4 blocks east of the block party. wos doesn't have a huge selection, but what it does carry is very high quality and it rules for experimental and world music, too.

btw, it's jeff samuel, not samuels (common mistake).

have fun in seattle.

Dave Segal (Da ve Segal), Saturday, 30 July 2005 06:26 (twenty years ago)

actually, wall of sound is about 4 blocks WEST of the block party. sorry.

Dave Segal (Da ve Segal), Saturday, 30 July 2005 06:26 (twenty years ago)

Also, different sort of electronic music, but if you have any interest in Industrial music (and Goth and related genres), MusicWerks on Pine is a great specialist shop. I skipped out of an afternoon of Society for Music Theory sessions last time I was in town, just so I could spend some quality browsing time there.

Paul in Santa Cruz (Paul in Santa Cruz), Saturday, 30 July 2005 15:35 (twenty years ago)

i'd like to repeat Dave's message to stop in on Wall of Sound. smallest selection in town, but also the highest quality selection in town. prices are higher but it's worth the extra buck or two to support those guys.

biz, Saturday, 30 July 2005 16:38 (twenty years ago)

Also, forgot to mention Respect Records on Pine and 13th. It's great for underground hip hop, used funk, soul, disco, reggae, dub and jazz vinyl.

Btw, Lusine killed it tonight at the Block Party with a funky, brilliantly paced set that moved seamlessly from tech-house to electro to IDM and back again.

Dave Segal (Da ve Segal), Sunday, 31 July 2005 06:55 (twenty years ago)

I must agree.. Lusine was the highlight. although the DJs before them were great too... I'll never hear the Cookie Monster the same again. "GET DOWN! GET DOWN! GET DOWN! GET DOWN!"

eight months pass...
So let's discuss Seattle electronic music happenings here. Good nights? How about that KRAFT night over at Rebar? Anything?

gaseous (gaseous), Saturday, 15 April 2006 03:39 (twenty years ago)

It's called KRAKT, and it's consistently excellent.

Oscillate on Tuesdays at Baltic Room are also great; more varied than KRAKT, and with more touring artists (Jeff Milligan is coming April 25). A hot new Seattle producer, Jon McMillion, is playing Oscillate May 2 to celebrate the release of his 12" EP Inner Floor (Orac). If you dig Bruno Pronsato and Perlon Records' roster, you'll dig Jon's stuff.

I write a column in The Stranger that focuses on electronic music and underground hiphop. I strive to alert people to the good shit happening in Seattle.

Dave Segal (Da ve Segal), Saturday, 15 April 2006 05:19 (twenty years ago)

Oscillate on Tuesdays at Baltic Room are also great...

That should be "is also great."

Dave Segal (Da ve Segal), Saturday, 15 April 2006 05:20 (twenty years ago)

Dave's Data Breaker column in the Stranger is always a good place to start, and if you're a local, the Division list is a good place to read up on what's happening within the scene. It's a mixture of tech-talk, show promotion, and general opinion. Some of the Seattle names that get outside recognition and big ups from me include kris moon, jerry abstract, paul edwards, and caro. KRAKT is great. And the next week brings an embarrasment of riches: Audion Wednesday, kris moon at the rebar thursday, and a houseier night at the lo-fi on saturday. and there are probably others that i am forgetting.

jergins (jergins), Saturday, 15 April 2006 23:05 (twenty years ago)

hot-assed out-of-towners playing in coming weeks: James HOlden, MOdeselektor.

jergins (jergins), Saturday, 15 April 2006 23:34 (twenty years ago)

OOO

jergins (jergins), Saturday, 15 April 2006 23:34 (twenty years ago)

Decibel Fest happens Sept 14-17 this year, and if it's anything like the last two years' events, you'll want to get a pass and take off work for its duration. It's not hyperbole to call Decibel the Mutek of the U.S.

Dave Segal (Da ve Segal), Sunday, 16 April 2006 01:32 (twenty years ago)

the last two singles by bruno pronsato that i've heard have been absolutely great! has anyone heard the two singles he did for telegraph?

breakfast pants (disco stu), Sunday, 16 April 2006 18:02 (twenty years ago)

the last two singles by bruno pronsato that i've heard have been absolutely great! has anyone heard the two singles he did for telegraph?

Yes. You need 'em.

Expect many more 12s from Bruno in 2006 on various labels.
Magda reportedly will be featuring 4 of his tracks on her next mix disc for M-nus, too.

Dave Segal (Da ve Segal), Sunday, 16 April 2006 21:30 (twenty years ago)

His track 'Live In Cascadia' from ORAC 15 is the first time I've heard a local that both fits with my current Euro/minimal obsession and evokes the physicality of this area, its verdure and dampness, twilight around the edges of bleep-bloop house.

jergins (jergins), Sunday, 16 April 2006 22:27 (twenty years ago)

That Postal Service line, 'You can case the ground/from the Cascades to Puget Sound,' comes to mind, but that's a distant second.

jergins (jergins), Sunday, 16 April 2006 22:31 (twenty years ago)

yeah there's that stuff, but i like the house i am hearing in his music which is quite the opposite feeling actually! i am thinking urbanity, real sophistication, deepness, but those last two adjectives can apply to the crunchy pacific northwest, too. maybe the allure in his music is the clash of opposites. it wouldn't be the first time house benfited from an influence outside its traditional milieu. tracks like "twin city" slay me. crunchy house!

breakfast pants (disco stu), Monday, 17 April 2006 01:44 (twenty years ago)

that we can come from opposite directions and enjoy his stuff so much must mean he's doing something right!

jergins (jergins), Monday, 17 April 2006 02:57 (twenty years ago)

What gives Bruno's tracks their distinctiveness is his affinity for jazz (Miles, Dolphy) and 12-tone composers (Schoenberg, Berg, Webern). Yet he makes these "serious" influences sound seductive and hedonistic.

Dave Segal (Da ve Segal), Monday, 17 April 2006 05:18 (twenty years ago)

What's Son Of Rose up to? I picked up that self titled CD-R EP a few months ago and love it... definitely for anyone who likes Fennesz or Lexaunculpt's The Blurring Of Trees. "Shadow Us" is one of my favorite ambient pieces ever, right now. I hope there's more to come!

DOQQUN (donut), Monday, 17 April 2006 07:19 (twenty years ago)

They are playing Oscillate one of these weeks. Maybe it's tomorrow? The Baltic calendar and their own website didn't say.

jergins (jergins), Monday, 17 April 2006 15:56 (twenty years ago)

Son Of Rose is playing April 18 at the Baltic Room.

brettino's bounce, Monday, 17 April 2006 16:08 (twenty years ago)

Really stoked for the Holden show.. And Decibel Fest just keeps getting better and better each year so this year should really be something.

gaseous (gaseous), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 21:06 (twenty years ago)

Looks like Bola and Murcof are already confirmed for Decibel.

Dave Segal (Da ve Segal), Wednesday, 19 April 2006 02:38 (twenty years ago)

one month passes...
i can't wait... they should be announcing the full line-up soon, right?

gaseous (gaseous), Friday, 16 June 2006 01:18 (twenty years ago)

yeah, soon.

jergins (jergins), Friday, 16 June 2006 01:22 (twenty years ago)

Andy from Scientific American will be given live demonstrations of Ableton, literally, this time around. They had someone from the company give a demo before.. this one should be a little more fun.

That's my only beef about Decibel. The afterparties and the panels are all great, however you can only choose one or the other... get sleep, lose sleep, or don't sleep and feel fucked in a bad way. :(

aDOring NUTbians (donut), Friday, 16 June 2006 02:46 (twenty years ago)

will be giving

aDOring NUTbians (donut), Friday, 16 June 2006 02:46 (twenty years ago)

drugs?

jergins (jergins), Friday, 16 June 2006 02:47 (twenty years ago)

no thanks, but there's a guy in downtown right now with a sign that says "Need Some Mary Jane, The Kind You Dont Take Home To Mutha"

aDOring NUTbians (donut), Friday, 16 June 2006 02:51 (twenty years ago)

Just to continue on the Bruno Pronsato love upthread, someone really needs to compile all those vinyl 12s he's done and release them on CD for those of us too lazy to lift the dust cover off our turntables nowadays. I think he has more songs issued on wax than on CD, which kind of bums me out since I am just not that into vinyl.

BlastsOfStatic (BlastsofStatic), Friday, 16 June 2006 17:11 (twenty years ago)

Bruno has released for many labels (Orac, Philpot, Logistic, Musique Risquée, etc.), so it would be a legal nightmare to collect all of his 12s onto one CD.

Dave Segal (Da ve Segal), Saturday, 17 June 2006 20:43 (twenty years ago)

one month passes...
Bruno Pronsato and Caro live PAs tonight at the Baltic, 7 bucks. Should be great.

jergins (jergins), Tuesday, 25 July 2006 19:57 (nineteen years ago)

seven years pass...

Seemed like a good thread to revive -- I'm playing in Seattle on Nov. 8th at Electric Tea Garden with some really great electronic artists if any of y'all are around. Can't wait to hit Paseo again.

Also there's a show in Portland the next night, and Olympia on Sunday.

festival culture (Jordan), Wednesday, 23 October 2013 21:48 (twelve years ago)

Oh word. I was under the impression ETG closed for good a few weeks ago. I'll be there for sure tho.

old homophobic boom bap rap traditionalist (The Reverend), Wednesday, 23 October 2013 22:43 (twelve years ago)

Oh, I guess they're not closing til the 16th. Still sad as hell we're losing the best afterhours spot in town. :(

old homophobic boom bap rap traditionalist (The Reverend), Wednesday, 23 October 2013 22:46 (twelve years ago)

i heard that the last show there is on nov. 23rd, but idk. glad i got in under the wire, see you there!

festival culture (Jordan), Wednesday, 23 October 2013 22:50 (twelve years ago)

old homophobic boom bap rap traditionalist (The Reverend), Wednesday, 23 October 2013 22:57 (twelve years ago)
