is anyone anticipating "Siberia" by Echo and the Bunnymen?

Well, the album is out on September 20th. The news that Hugh Jones was producing piqued my interest, and by the sound of the samples on the official site he has done a fine job. (Although it wouldn't take much to better the piss thin production on "Flowers".) I'm a sucker for Ian's voice and Will's guitar, and as both seem to be in fine form, I, for one, am looking forward to it. Anyone else?

Who's playing bass these days?

I dunno...I kinda wish they'd hang it up, or at least revert back to the Electrafixion moniker. It's just not the Bunnymen anymore.

I'm really waiting for it but I'm not going to get upset if it stinks, because it probably will. There's a 20% chanche it's going to be good.

not really ANTICIPATING it, but i wouldn't mind hearing it.

and i LIKE the latter-era bunnymen records! they aren't like they were during their salad days, but they are still good (and FAR from embarrassing).

the thought of another bunnymen album leaves me cold.

I like all three of the "new" Bunnymen records, but they're not at all the same as the proper records from the '80s. Don't really care what moniker they use, as long as they're quality.

Evergreen had some respectable stufff on it.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 30 July 2005 06:14 (twenty years ago)

Yeah I had that one. It wasn't too bad. I sold it, but then I sold a lot of things I regret then, so...

Hydrochloric Shaved Weirds (Bimble...), Saturday, 30 July 2005 06:22 (twenty years ago)

flowers was far better than the drippy pop spurt "echo and the bunnymen" and they were fabulous live. even if will and ian look like gramps next to the other guys in the band. anticipating? at the very least...it's not like the record stores aren't glutted to the gills with new crap as is.

two weeks pass...
Two songs in, sounds good to me...

i's still waiting for mysterio part II, it was better than any of the reunion records simply by being mediocre.

Am I the only one who loves "Gone gone gone" and
"Thick-skinned world" more than blueberry cheesecake ?

Am I the only one who loves cheesecake ?

No, there is clearly at least two of you.

one month passes...
So for all the Bunnymen love on this board, is this as much as anyone's said? I think the new album is great, and is every bit the "return to form" as the latest New Order and Depeche Mode albums. Which is to say, good all (or nearly all) the way through.

Was I the only one hoping for another "Ocean Rain?" I'm all for misleading titles, but just this once.... Anyways, I thought it was alright.

We in ESTONIA like Echo & The Bunnymen and we like this album. However, we wish that Ian McCulloch would call it ESTONIA instead of Siberia. Even Morrissey mentioned us last year! After all, we in ESTONIA have been fans of him ever since he was Greg Preston in the 1970s BBC drama series Survivors. I always do wonder what would happen in ESTONIA if a virus wiped out 99% of the population.

Piotr Skut, I hope you aren't the troll you promised a new, unprecedented level of trolling, because I am disappointed. Your language doesn't even come close to mimicking the hilarity of European broken English. You don't even have an .ee email address!

Shame, shame.

We in ESTONIA are very good at the English since we learn it from the age of five! Also, since I am a pilot, I have to fly everywhere and can be in different counties. Having an .ee email address can be difficult if you are posting from Finland!

Piotr Skut, Wednesday, 19 October 2005 15:15 (twenty years ago)

Err, Piotr? Did you appear in "TinTin and the Red Sea Sharks" as a handsome, eyepatch-sporting blond castaway? Or was that a different Piotr Skut?

Tell that to all the Eurotrash I used to talk to on IRC...

Also please learn how the internet works...

Yes, that was me! Thank you for recognising me! I was also in Flight 714 too.

I am very proud of my roles in these two books and I hope ESTONIA was proud of me too. It was a fantastic experience - it turns out that Tintin was really Plastic Bertrand.

Piotr Skut, Wednesday, 19 October 2005 15:24 (twenty years ago)

Aah. I always wondered, you know. About Plastic Bertrand, I mean. Do you still resent Captain Haddock for misinterpreting your name as a command to "scoot"? I know when I first read "And the Red Sea Sharks" I felt really bad for you.

owen moorhead (i heart daniel miller), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 16:14 (twenty years ago)

Getting back to the topic at hand (and thanks for making me laugh out loud, Piotr), I enjoy Siberia. It's not as good as What Are You Going To Do WIth Your Life?, which was, to these ears, the last essential Bunny record, but I'll take what I can get from Mac and Will. I have been surprised to see this album get slammed (3 out of 10 in NME), when so many 80s revival bands are churning out imitations of Heaven Up Here. Respect your elders.

John Hunter, Wednesday, 19 October 2005 18:46 (twenty years ago)

i have steadfastly ignored the bunnymen since the breakup, except for coveting the gorgeous LP covers. but after reading a mediocre review, i downloaded the one song that got a nod ('Parthenon Drive') and it's really quite good. albeit not at all 'relevant.'
