PappaWheelie (PappaWheelie), Monday, 1 August 2005 19:31 (twenty years ago)

PappaWheelie, are you the same PapaWheelie (notice slight variation) that wrote the Miami Bass article on Stylus today? If so, what's the idea behind using a message-board pseudonym?

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 1 August 2005 19:40 (twenty years ago)

Uh...anyone referring to me and spells it with one p is spelling it incorrectly.

I always write/share/whatever with the name PappaWheelie.

But yeah, that Stylus piece is mine's own.

PappaWheelie (PappaWheelie), Monday, 1 August 2005 19:57 (twenty years ago)

In that same vein, I did spell Luke Skyywalker with two Y's when I wrote the piece. The editor (Todd?) changed it to one Y.

PappaWheelie (PappaWheelie), Monday, 1 August 2005 19:58 (twenty years ago)

PappaWheelie wins by a landslide.
Was forker ever a hair's breadth away from being the frontman for limp bizkit?

Fetchboy (Felcher), Monday, 1 August 2005 20:01 (twenty years ago)

michael burble, Monday, 1 August 2005 20:41 (twenty years ago)

"this fine smoked beer was Beechwood-aged in Havana for six months before being processed through a progression of unicorn bladders and then steeped in a virgin"

I'm embarrassed that I started this thread. I was very drunk.
What were we drinking, Pappa?
On my count, it was a split bottle of red wine, then hypnotiq, then white wine, then yak, then vodka. Lots of vodka.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 1 August 2005 23:30 (twenty years ago)

two years pass...

PappaWheelie V, Saturday, 19 April 2008 03:48 (eighteen years ago)

six months pass...

Dearest PappaWheelie:

I am confused about the song "Doo Doo Brown," which is referred to as a Baltimore club song from the early 90s. I remember hearing a song played on B96 and WGCI in the spring of 1992, with lyrics that went, "Face down, butt up, that's the way we like to ****! Doo doo brown!" There was also a part that went "I wanna rock right now!" I was under the impression that this song was by Luther Campbell of 2 Live Crew, credited as "Luke." But looking into it right now, I see that the Baltimore club track samples 2 Live Crew?

Which is the version I remember?

2 Live Crew, "C'Mon Babe (Doo Doo Brown Version)"
2 Hype Brothers and a Dog, "Doo Doo Brown"
Luke, "Doo Doo Brown" [not even sure this exists except in my memory]

Another lyric: "Hey, we wanna party!"
― jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, July 20, 2006 10:40 AM (2 years ago) Bookmark Suggest Ban Permalink

"Head, head, and more head!"

Confusing ... on Luke's solo album there are songs called "Head Head and More Head" AND "I Wanna Rock." I feel like maybe there were lyrical motifs from 2 Live Crew that Campbell recycled when he went solo?

There may have been a lyric about "pop[ping] that coochie" as well.

I'm not PW but:
2 Hype Brothers and a Dog "Doo Doo Brown" is an early Baltimore club track (by an alias of then-Baltimore now-Atlanta radio personality Frank Ski) and it samples 2 Live Crew's "C'Mon Babe."

^^Yeah, that's it.

jaymc, Wednesday, 3 December 2008 20:37 (seventeen years ago)

jaymc, i presume this is just bait, and you know me (you know everyone, for that matter) well enough to understand I have to take the bait on this subject...

luke was not a founding member of 2 live crew.

2 live were 3 guys in the air force stationed in riverside california (mr. mixx, fresh kid ice, and amazing v)

mr. mixx seems to me to be the core of the group from day 1. fresh kid ice is the carl wilson of the group, open minded and diplomatic.

i've never interacted with amazing v, and i've heard he's since passed away, but from the reports, v was never thoroughly happy with the group's direction early on (this is well before the x-rated days).

---

luke was a member of the ghetto style djs in miami, who was renting out a skating rink after hours (calling it pac jam) and booking live acts. he also ran a pirate radio station from some warehouse. this is like 1984 we're talking.

needless to say, egyptian lover was huge in 1984, and macola records distribution had a strong foot in miami.

2 live crew's self imprint (Fresh Beat records) was M&D'd by macola. this means if you belong to a record pool that macola is in, you get the new macola jams.

luke got the first 2 live crew 12" (Revalation b/w 2 Live), and heard the line "like luke skywalker i got the force, whenever i rhyme i am the boss", and luke made this song his theme song as a dj.

luke's crowd like this song because it was one of the first records to have sustained 808 kick (bass), 2nd only to t la rock's it's yours (which was a staple of luke's set too).

luke brought 2 live crew to perform at pac jam, and eventually, decided to manage them, front some cash for their 3rd 12", and setup a label to release their music on.

when it came time to reenlist in the air force, only amazing v did. the other 2 guys moved to miami.

after a couple live shows, they felt they needed more stage presence, so they added luke to the stage show as hype man, and recruited old friend brother marquis (who was free since the caution crew broke up) as 2nd rapper in 1986.

of course, the 1989 double album (as nasty as they wanna be) was their national breakthrough, and it was new member brother marquis who penned the now classic "lick it til your tongue turns doo doo brown" line in c'mon babe.

after 3 albums, major labels began seriously considering buying 2 live's contracts from luke...however, luke failed to draft contracts, so the crew could leave with no fight.

this is when the group began having troubles.

luke quickly drafted contracts, and convinced the group that they needed to flood the market asap with another album, however, they should not do it under the 2 live banner...instead, it will be luke featuring 2 live crew (banned in the usa). they agreed

but luke paid the act as work for hire with a flat fee and no royalties. needless to say, when luke continued to get checks and 2 live didn't, the shit hit the fan.

mr. mixx moved to oakland, quitting the group (and leaving luke w/o a dj/producer for all of his acts).

luke hired mc shy d's djs (mike fresh and DJ toomp, aka, the ODS) to produce...but hey failed to make hits and capture the miami sound immediately.

all 3 guys in 2 live entered lawsuits against luke for unpaid royalties that predate the solo album. eventually, good matured fresh kid ice backed out and stayed by luke's side.

instead, luke convinced the act to reunite for one more album in 1991 (sports weekend). the album spawned one minor hit (pop that coochie), and nearly broke them to pay for all the samples in light of the 1991 biz markie case.

luke dumped everyone, including the ODS.

Marquis went to atlanta to work with ODS's DJ Toomp as 2 Nazty, landing a M&D deal with Attitude records in 1992. I was working with attitude's in house producer (Mamado) at that time and was lobbying to get some production work or a remix...but i think they had already turned in finished recordings and the label seemed hell bent on ignoring the project.

the point here is, no one knew 2 live had broken up, and luke wanted to cash in on that...so he quickly released a solo single produced by the guy in town who finally got notice (Devastator).

needless to say, since luke is not a rapper, a dj, nor a producer, so the song is basically a spotlight for devastator's beat and luke just being luke...which work's wonders, sure...but he had to rehash a lot of borrowed concepts (saying doo doo brown, pop that coochie, etc).

this video's intro is the "yeah, you heard the rumor...2 live left me...but *I'M LUKE GOT DAMN IT*" statement.

Frank Ski had been working his angle for a while, and Ski's Doo Doo Brown, which obv samples 2 live, was HUGE in Florida, and got play in late night mix shows every day as if it was from miami.

Luke did get Frank in to do some remixes (the 1992 Disco Rick single "wiggle wiggle" comes to mind).

the 2 live track from the friday sdtk (hoochie mama) in 1995 was the last time all 4 members reunited for a song, although, luke recorded his part separately. notice how the hype man changes half way through the song...

the friday sdtk coordinators didn't know the group had long broken up, and luke refused to tell them...so he hired the act on a work for hire basis again.

luke has since defended his role as not just the hype man, "but the hook man...they ain't had no hits without me."

brother marquis quit for a while to become born again, but fresh kid ice and marquis reunited recently, having a track produced by mannie fresh...which is full circle since mannie's early 1987 work was largely steeped in 2 live's legacy.

and now toomp is TOOMP.

i'm trying to decide whether st@cy fr33man got you to listen to GCI or if it was vice versa.

Granny Dainger, Wednesday, 3 December 2008 21:25 (seventeen years ago)

yeah, gci got me to listen to st@cy fr33man

or maybe i don't understand the qustion

Cucumbeard (PappaWheelie V), Wednesday, 3 December 2008 21:31 (seventeen years ago)

Hahaha. I was listening to GCI long before Stacie and I became friends. I don't think she listened to it much. She wasn't really into music.

PappaWheelie, it's only "bait" inasmuch as I know you're an expert on Miami bass and so I figured you were the one to ask. Thanks for the info.

jaymc, Wednesday, 3 December 2008 21:33 (seventeen years ago)

i realize it was long winded, but i did want to make a point that I Wanna Rock was a song rushed to market to pull the wool over the fans' eyes.

it worked so well, people think luke and 2 live crew are synonymous today.

good song, regardless, and one of the last songs of the era of bass i liked (1986-1992)

the "i wanna rock" vocal sample was this jacksonville fla song (produced by 95 south/69 boyz/quad city dj's mastermind, cc orange):

Cucumbeard (PappaWheelie V), Wednesday, 3 December 2008 21:40 (seventeen years ago)

the "baddest dj" in that 1991 luke video is steve dee, according to the miami bass history group.

he's holding the 1991 champion belt.

here's the performance that won him that title:

article doesn't really talk about what the court cases were over (authorship presumably?). didn't he think for some time that an obscure track he cut was ripped off to make the song
