Loving the stuffing out of his s/t from 1975. Also partial to "Cry Tough". I'm going to say classic, mostly of his remarkable sideman heritage (The Boss and Neil Young), and his gnarly Strat tones. Plus he writes those plantive, Keith Richards-like songs with grit and soul.

That's mostly BECAUSE of his sideman heritage. Durr.

Grin's "White Lies", "End Unkind", and "Moon Tears" are undeniable. The S/T is the best, I wore out the vinyl 30 years ago. Each successive LP had a little less charm, until eventually he made the smart move to Born in the USA tour sideman. But as a live act on his own, he had a nice line in trampoline heroics.

Grin's 1+1 is classic, as is the 90s The Very Best of Grin featuring Nils Lofgren w/bonus stuff that's actually good.

His first solo album (S/T) is fondly recalled but then I haven't heard it since the 70s. Every LP after that was disappointing IMO.

Those gnarly Strat tones, plus a couple of his best songs, are also on the Crazy Horse S/T.

two years pass...

I'm listening to the self-titled Grin album right now - while I like it, a lot of it sounds like a parody of hard rock, esp. "I Had Too Much." ("I'd hit you in the mouth but I'm too lazy"? And then later he adlibs "I had too FUCKIN' much"? I HOPE this was a parody...)

I used to own all 4 Grin records and the first three solos. Evidently I was a fan. Sold 'em all years ago and haven't missed 'em. (I kept that "Back It Up" bootleg, but haven't played it in years.)
