Totally impossible, I know, but can you really beat "Stardust," now, come on.

bewitched bothered and bewildered (all verses version)

Randy Newman: Dayton, Ohio, 1903. All things proceed from there. (Actually, "Sail Away is the Greatest Song Ever Written About America", but probably isn't song of the 20th century.)

"The Internationale" even though the standard arrangement was written by 1888. If that's not acceptable then it's "We Didn't Start the Fire" obv.

Moscow 1939.

Joachim van Ribbentrop arrives to conclude the pact to divide up Eastern Europe with Molotov. Despite an atmosphere of considerable tension and distrust formal diplomatic niceties are kept to. Ribbentrop is greeted by the Red Army Band who break into the 'Horst Wessel Lied'. If not the song of the 20th century, certainly one of its most bizarre muscial moments.

George Michael is upset that he hasn't been asked to pronounce on this thread.

I often think "Bridge Over Troubled Water" is the greatest song of the 20th Century while it's playing, and sometime I think that even when it's not.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Sunday, 31 July 2005 13:55 (twenty years ago)

"Mom & Dad Like the Baby More than Me" by the Happy Flowers. Clearly.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 31 July 2005 13:56 (twenty years ago)

Obviously, the answer is "Pac Man Fever"

Judging by sales, it would probably be something from the West Side Story soundtrack, or Titanic, or something.

billstevejim (billstevejim), Sunday, 31 July 2005 15:57 (twenty years ago)

Or no, wait, "White Christmas?"

billstevejim (billstevejim), Sunday, 31 July 2005 15:57 (twenty years ago)

what's "stardust"?

I don't know this either. At first I thought you meant Music Sounds Better With You.

Nick H (Nick H), Sunday, 31 July 2005 16:21 (twenty years ago)

seem to recall "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" claiming this title

na, Sunday, 31 July 2005 17:30 (twenty years ago)

Unless you guys are all being sarcastic goofyheads, he is referring to "Stardust" by Hoagy Carmichael.

And na is correct, "Something Over the Rainbow" won this in some millennium-era poll. Most of the songs listed, however, were instrumentals.

Adam Harrison-Friday, Sunday, 31 July 2005 17:55 (twenty years ago)

Er, "Somewhere Over the Rainbow."
