God Body Your Best Buddy, Sunday, 31 July 2005 20:53 (twenty years ago)

oh dear, that title.

i can move move move any mountain (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 31 July 2005 20:55 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, the title's pretty dire. I suspect, though, that it's going to be just a Neil + guitar album and that's fine with me.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Sunday, 31 July 2005 20:56 (twenty years ago)

Jesus H! How are you supposed to navigate that crappy site?

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Sunday, 31 July 2005 20:58 (twenty years ago)

I was wrong. It's a Nashville album:

"Neil has been recording the new album in Nashville with keyboardist Spooner Oldham, pedal steel guitarist Ben Keith and drummer Carl Himmel. The Nashville recording sessions follow Neil's recovery from surgery for a brain aneurysm he suffered during the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ceremonies earlier this year.

Rumor has it that Neil has booked Nashville 's original Grand Ol Opry at the Ryman Auditorium from August 15-19, for filming by director Jonathan Demme."

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Sunday, 31 July 2005 21:35 (twenty years ago)

Will "When God Made Me" be on it?

broken wind, Sunday, 31 July 2005 21:40 (twenty years ago)

Oh, man - are they selling tickets to those Nashville performances?? I'd love a link if so...

"The Painter" is on itunes right now, you can also hear it on the neil young official site. It sounds nice - like Silver & Gold style mixed with a little Harvest Moon. Nice lyrics on this song! Totally looking forward to this. Has it leaked yet? Not that i won't totally buy it anyway - there's a DVD with it!

Roger Fidelity (Roger Fidelity), Monday, 5 September 2005 22:02 (twenty years ago)

It leaked a week or two ago. I've been listening to it on and off, but I was almost immediately convinced it's the best folksy/acoustic album since Harvest Moon and has a few of his best songs in that style since the '70s. I guess inspiration comes when you cheat death.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Monday, 5 September 2005 23:02 (twenty years ago)

You're a man after my own heart Johnny boy.

Roger Fidelity (Roger Fidelity), Monday, 5 September 2005 23:05 (twenty years ago)

shit. just listening to the painter right now, it's wonderful. I can't wait to DL/buy this.

AaronK (AaronK), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 12:32 (twenty years ago)

am i alone in thinking this is really really bad? and I LOVE 'ol Shakey - I'll admit I've only intermittently kept up with his last couple of albums, but what I remember from Greendale and Silver & Gold was way better than this maudlin aging hippie crap.

Josh Love (screamapillar), Thursday, 8 September 2005 08:47 (twenty years ago)

how is greendale NOT maudlin aging hippie crap? and i LOVE Greendale!

AaronK (AaronK), Thursday, 8 September 2005 11:55 (twenty years ago)

come on, he was a maudlin aging hippie in the early 70s

dan. (dan.), Thursday, 8 September 2005 14:09 (twenty years ago)

That really is a terrible website, though.

Huey (Huey), Thursday, 8 September 2005 14:15 (twenty years ago)

ol' wifey's taken over, I'm afraid

the croz, Thursday, 8 September 2005 16:09 (twenty years ago)

Hyeh, him und wifey need a "Triad" eh croz!

Red Lorre Yellow Lorre, Thursday, 8 September 2005 18:52 (twenty years ago)

why do the wives always have to get involved? as if marriage were creative collaboration in and of itself. artists need to be setting up boundaries! JESUS CHRIST! this rather annoys me.

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Thursday, 8 September 2005 19:02 (twenty years ago)

neilz ballz disappeared with the prairie wind long ago
wifey solo album is imminent

the croz, Thursday, 8 September 2005 23:23 (twenty years ago)

"solo album": really? Well, Carrie Snodgrass and(girlfriend) Nicolette Larson had some talent, but they RIP. Who is his wifey now?

Hey, I have this LP now. Do y'all like it, now?

the bellefox, Monday, 2 January 2006 13:13 (twenty years ago)

It's no classic, but I like it a lot. It's sort of makes a virtue of its middlingness -- definitely my favourite of his since Freedom, and certainly the least forced.

Chuck_Tatum (Chuck_Tatum), Monday, 2 January 2006 15:10 (twenty years ago)

i can't get into this. i listened to it only once though.

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Tuesday, 3 January 2006 00:45 (twenty years ago)

this is all right, but it's not anything mind-blowing. it is better than his last three albums, though, and maybe his best since Sleeps With Angels

Saw the Demme film Neil Young: Heart of Gold last night at the movies. They shoulda called it Neil Young: Prarie Wind since it was the big debut of the album and they play the whole thing and follow it with a couple "old hits," al in front of a big "Prarie Wind" backdrop.
It was pretty excellent and the band and Neil sounded great. Neil's noticeably chubbier but he sounds exactly the same as he did 30 years ago. I'm glad my first hearing of Prarie Wind came from this film. I don't think I ever really want to hear it again, though.
Best part of the whole movie was the very end when Neil plays "Old Laughing Lady" all by himself in the Ryman Auditorium while the credits roll, incredible. And "Old Man" sure as hell sounded good, too.
Anyone else catch it yet? I recommend it to Neil fans. I wasn't so sure I was gonna like it and hesitated to see it, but my buddy at the theatre let me in free so it was hard to say no. It's worth paying for, though.

Tripmaker (SDWitzm), Friday, 21 April 2006 18:35 (twenty years ago)
