Is Solar Music Live any good? It's the only one on Amazon that's affordable? The one I really want, the one Roger Dean cover with the boy standing on a dragon's back, is like $80!

I like Grobschnitt, and think their inventiveness is often overlooked. They were often funny in a completely goofball way, adding also some quite lovely, gentle aspects to the middle-period albums like "Jumbo" and "Rockpommel's Land". Stefan Danielak has a really unique voice, and Eroc is not only a good drummer, but very inventive and technically gifted all-round. He has many solo albums and seems to have helped immensely with his work on Phillip Boa's albums. He seems to be a fountain of ideas. Each Grobschnitt album sounds somewhat different from the others - I think "Ballerman" is a bit clunky in places, especially on "Sahara", but it's not bad at all. "Solar Music Live" is a pretty stunning live recording of their longest and most malleable work. I found "Illegal" to be kind of weak except for the title song, which I love. The next one, "Razzia", is a bit similar, but heavier and has more of a new-wave influence, which I like very much. They always seemed to have done very interesting things with the music for their stage shows - I'd love to see film or video footage of them.

I've got to assume the person selling "Rockpommel's Land" for $80 is merely looking to hold onto his copy.

I don't know. All things being equal, that's the one I'd want to check out first, but whatever.

How do they stack up next to Yes? That's the band they seem most often to get compared to. Like, if I'm into Close to the Edge and Relayer, should I take a chance on Solar Music Live?

Solar Music Live isn't like Yes at all, really - it' s more a heavy, slow, atmospheric-type record. Jumbo and Rockpommel's Land, to me, sound the most Yes-like, but I don't thinnk they're nearly as complex as something like Relayer.
