Love at first sight

This is where you list all the bands/artists who managed to turn you into a fan based solely on the strength of their live show. I'm referring to bands that you were either completely oblivious or indifferent to going in, and after you felt the need to get a hold of everything that they have ever recorded. For me, in no particular order:

Mylo
Supercar
Gang of Four

J-rock (Julien Sandiford), Monday, 8 August 2005 07:26 (twenty years ago)

eighties matchbox b-line disaster!!! their live shows are amazing.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Monday, 8 August 2005 11:47 (twenty years ago)

Seachange.

Saw them by chance.

They only have (had??) one album out. But yeah. Amazing live.

And Killing Joke too. I was iffy about even going to see them. Good thing I did. ;)

Aja (aja), Monday, 8 August 2005 13:10 (twenty years ago)

The Ex.

Unfortunatey, when I got the albums later all I could think was, "these are good... but they're just not the same!" Ah, well.

Fugazi

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 8 August 2005 13:21 (twenty years ago)

Aja, Seachange finished recording their second album, but I think they're doing some jiggery-pokery on it to rework bits. Keep an eye out.

HIM (the jazz version, not the rock version) were amazing live, especially as I'd expected a BORING post-rock set.

Gogol Bordello made me a complete fan of their live show, but not want to buy their CDs. How are they?

Math & Science.

Declan Zimmerman, Monday, 8 August 2005 17:12 (twenty years ago)

Joanna Newsom

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 8 August 2005 17:17 (twenty years ago)

Based solely on their live show?

- The Secret Machines (seconded, thirded, whatever)

- The Meat Puppets (whose records never lived up to their live show...original line-up, that is)

- Weezer (whose first album, though ultimately fine, lacked the punch of their live show).

Gogol Bordello records are similarly a let-down.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 8 August 2005 17:19 (twenty years ago)

yeah, im not too big on their records, but the 9-minute recorded version of "baro foro" is still pretty damn good. though it'll never start to eclipse live gogol.

Fetchboy (Felcher), Monday, 8 August 2005 17:24 (twenty years ago)

Kinski

Tripmaker (SDWitzm), Monday, 8 August 2005 17:25 (twenty years ago)

-- Tripmaker (tripmaker...), August 8th, 2005 11:25 AM. (SDWitzm)

I should have more of their albums. They are great live. Do you have their latest? Is it good?

Blowfly

cs, Monday, 8 August 2005 21:16 (twenty years ago)

I don't have the new Kinski album, Aja, but the ones I do have I never feel the urge to throw on. It doesn't measure up to their show, IMO. I'd like to hear it, though. Maybe we'll get it at the community radio station I volunteer at, now that we do CMJ charts.

Tripmaker (SDWitzm), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 12:54 (twenty years ago)

I have to say, I find Kinski unbearably dull.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 13:10 (twenty years ago)

Micah P Hinson
The Flaming Lips
Architecture in Helsinki

am now v. curious to see Seachange live.

I agree that their show is soooo much better than their albums. Well, I've only got one of them, but it's obvious. But I still love "Semaphore" wheter it's the studio version or live.

I have to say, I find Kinski unbearably dull.

-- Alex in NYC (vassife...), August 9th, 2005 7:10 AM. (vassifer)

Have you seen them live?? Perhaps you are reffering to their stage presence, which isn't too much, but the music is great live. But if you are reffering to the music live as dull, you had your eag plugs shoved down too far!

Aja (aja), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 14:23 (twenty years ago)

uh, ear plugs.... and perhaps that should have said "shoved in too far" oh, you get the idea

Aja (aja), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 14:25 (twenty years ago)

Architecture in Helsinki

Oh yeah, I was v. charmed by them live but disappointed upon hearing the record.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 14:30 (twenty years ago)

No, I haven't seen Kinski live. I've only heard their albums, which bored me to tears (if I want "guitar textures", I already have five or six Sonic Youth albums I've long since stopped listening to).

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 14:38 (twenty years ago)

fugazi indeed
