The North Will Rise Again, An Older Lover etc., Fit And Working Again ...

Robin Carmody, Monday, 11 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

The Fall have more than one song? I thought they played the same song over and over... Just kidding there. I love The Fall. It's hard to rank their songs though... they're all about attitude and swagger.

Tim DiGravina, Monday, 11 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Club Exit, Chicago, Summer of 1982. My first night at a good dance club in a while. DJ played "I Am the Fly", then Ian Dury's "Spasticus Austisticus", and the floor was getting pretty crowded. Then "Totally Wired" came on and for three minutes bedlam reigned. I had never heard it before, and no other Fall song can touch it ever since.

elizabeth anne marjorie, Monday, 11 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

elizabeth anne marjorie, Monday, 11 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

We did this to death last year. N. Dastoor was compiling a Fall tape IIRC.

Dr. C, Tuesday, 12 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

it must have Winter (Hostel Maxi) on it (peel session version if possible), but really, lets be honest, 10 isn't enough

gareth, Tuesday, 12 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

10 is ridiculous but,

English Scheme
C n C's Stop Mithering
The N.W.R.A
How I Wrote Elastic Man
C.R.E.E.P.
Athlete Cured
Hit The North
Disney's Dream Debased
Paintwork

The thread Dr. C talks about only cover 1978-83 but there was another one for later stuff

N., Tuesday, 12 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Oh, that's only 9. Stick in 'Slates, Slags etc.' too then.

N., Tuesday, 12 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

In no order

Cab it Up!
Various Times
Behind the Counter
Neighborhood of Infinity
Gut of the Quantifier
Tempo House (Speed Trials version)
The Reckoning
Repetition
Gross Chapel

I'm gonna stop there. If I list any more, I'll have to go OVER 10.

Dave225, Tuesday, 12 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Oh F@ck it, here goes - my list will be different to everyone's except possibly Sinker's (fellow Dragnet-phile). I honour of him, I'll avoid the number 10 and go for 11.

1. New Face In Hell. 2. Dice Man. 3. Music Scene 4. Flat Of Angles 5. Choc-Stock 6. Before The Moon Falls 7. A Figure Walks 8. Frightened. 9. The Man Whose Head Expanded. 10. In My Area 11. Your Heart Out

A friend revealed to me the other day that he had 400 different live Fall tapes. FOUR HUNDRED!! I knew he was into The Fall, but 400!

Dr. C, Tuesday, 12 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

How He Wrote Elastic Man? Honestly... hardly qualifies as a fall track. Where's the NOIZU for one?

The Frenz Experiment is curiously underrepresented on these lists.

Sterling Clover, Tuesday, 12 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Frenz? Nah - post-1982-ish Fall is too slick to merit consideration. The true heart of the mighty Fall beats in the gnarled, beer n' woodbines sound of Dragnet and the early singles.

Dr. C, Tuesday, 12 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Sterling - are you making an odd Elastica joke or do you genuinely not like 'How I Wrote Elastic Man'? You forget I'm a lyric man.

I love 'The Frenz Experiment'. It got 6/10 in the NME. Idiots.

N., Tuesday, 12 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

N. -- dumb Elastica joke.

Sterling Clover, Tuesday, 12 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

First 10 that came to mind, so might be my favourites, then again might not:

Totally Wired, U.S. 80s-90s, Guest Informant, Rowche Rumble, The Classical, Athlete Cured, Winter, Bremen Nacht, Kimble, Cab It Up

Jeff W, Tuesday, 12 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

today's list

The Classical
Various Times
Who Makes The Nazis
New Face In Hell
In The Park
An Older Lover
In My Area
Copped It
Paint Work
Your Heart Out

dan, Tuesday, 12 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I forgot No Bulbs!!! and The Man Whose Head Expanded! and ...

Jeff W, Tuesday, 12 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I don't understand the fuss about 'The Man Whose Head Expanded'. I really should have had 'New Face In Hell' but that would have made FOUR tracks from Grotesque and that would just be mad.

N., Tuesday, 12 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Archer Prewitt is the king of fall songs. "White Sky" and "In the Sun" being the perfect two.

Brock K, Tuesday, 12 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Jeff W's list matches what I would do the most closely.

Sterling Clover, Tuesday, 12 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

My ten favourites in no particular order are English Scheme, C 'n' C- s-Mithering, New Puritan, Slates, Slags etc., Just Step S'Ways, Lie Dream of a Casino Soul, Eat Y'Self Fitter, Wings, Paint Work and Hit the North.

Mark Dixon, Tuesday, 12 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

very difficult question, so i will just add that smile and various times should be on any list.

i lurve lots of fall stuff but there is still HEAPS i haven't heard or haven't heard enough. my two current faves are "putta block" and "i'm into CB".

di, Tuesday, 12 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Not QUITE my favorite band ever, but they've made more albums I love than any other...

So my top 10:

1) U.S. '80s-'90s 2) Prole Art Threat 3) Totally Wired 4) 4 1/2 Inch 5) Leave The Capitol 6) How I Wrote "Elastic Man" 7) Put Away 8) Wings 9) Black Monk Theme pt. 1 (yes it's a cover) 10) The Container-Drivers

Douglas, Tuesday, 12 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Mark Dixon's list, as you can see, is spookily similar to mine. We are soul brothers.

Dave225 manages to pick a selection of my least favourite tracks. Even spookier.

N., Wednesday, 13 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

"The Nose One" by Shoes This High.

duane, Wednesday, 13 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Mark Dixon's list is v. good.

Some more I forgot: ....Australians In Europe, Lay Of The Land, Psykick Dancehall, Chicago Now!, Spoilt Victorian Child, Glam-Racket, British People In Hot Weather, Futures & Pasts....

Jeff W, Wednesday, 13 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

married, 2 kids 500 dollar bottle of wine totally wired chicago, now what you need my new house big new prinz eat y'self fitter shoulder pads ...and the next one i listen to.

pauls00, Wednesday, 13 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I've added up all the replies (I'm anal like that) so according to this thread the most popular Fall tracks (Votes in()) are:

1. Totally wired(5) 1= Wings(5) 3= Paintwork(4) 3= Various times(4) 5= New face in hell(3) 5= Cab it up(3) 5= The classical(3) 5= Winter(3)

Altogether, 84 different tracks were mentioned, mainly from the Dragnet/Slates/Grotesque/Hex period. This probably means that the Fall's musical Canon is slightly bigger than most.

Here's a list of my 10 least favourite tracks (just to labour the thread a bit more) Popcorn double feature, L.A. Haf found Boorman, Dresden dolls, W.M.C. blob59, Fantastic life, The chizlers, Hard life in the country, Lucifer over Lancashire, Hot aftershave bop, Sleep debt snatches.

Still make a better album than the second Elastica one!

Kris England, Thursday, 14 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Well to start off with, let's say... L...L..L.A.A.A.A Elves Lost In Music (produced by MES... oh, *thats* how music's supposed to sound...) Spector VS Rector, from Totales Turns (our hero goes back into the moun-tains... ahh, quality.. or "that man".. "no xmas"... others...) M5..6..whatever it's called (off Middle Class Revolt) Rowche Rumble High Tension Line right, how many does that leave me? 3: Jawbone & the air rifle Now, 2: It's late, I'm feeling a little the worse for wear, and this is getting hard work, so how about Victoria and There's a Ghost in My House to finish things off? Or no, I've got it: Mollusc in Tyrol? Or that track off Cruisers Creek... "...suburbia holds more than you care for...", or Good Life in Country ("the valley rings with ice - cream - vans")
Coming soon: top ten Adult Net trax...
Hmm, Bill Rosenblatt. ... it seemed so plausible...

Pay Your Rates!!!
