OPO: Every record ever made

This is for listening pleasure, not investment. If you had to choose one record to listen to for an indefinite period of time, what will it be? And don't pick a box set or compilation just because it has more songs on it. OK, I'm really just trying to find something new to listen to, but I don't want people to recommend long lists of mediocre crap. So you can exclude the canon if you want to; I already own Sticky fucking Fingers... But I'm looking for the one record you have heard that you really connect with ....

I second "Spirit Of Eden". Talk Talk representin' so far!

grauzone, Wednesday, 10 August 2005 13:13 (twenty years ago)

I love Talk Talk, no question, but for myself I'd pick The Comsat Angels - Sleep No More.

Ian Riese-Moraine: a casualty of social estrangement. (Eastern Mantra), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 13:18 (twenty years ago)

Fairport Convention - What We Did On Our Holidays

NickB (NickB), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 13:23 (twenty years ago)

Maybe "Giant Steps"?

Just saw Richard Thompson live two days ago Nick; a memorable and awesome experience.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 13:23 (twenty years ago)

Good stuff indeed.

NickB (NickB), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 13:30 (twenty years ago)

Spirit Of Eden, ordered. Others already owned or on list for further investigation.

Draw Tipsy, ya hack. (dave225.3), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 13:32 (twenty years ago)

I seem to recall you're a Slovenly fan. Ever get the Life Without Buildings album? There's a kinship there, I think.

NickB (NickB), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 13:35 (twenty years ago)

incredible string band "5000 spirits or layers of the onion"

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 13:40 (twenty years ago)

Television - Marquee Moon

If you already have that, Talking Book by Stevie Wonder

Big Loud Mountain Ape (Big Loud Mountain Ape), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 13:46 (twenty years ago)

I second "Talking Book" as well, that was my second choice.

grauzone, Wednesday, 10 August 2005 13:51 (twenty years ago)

Nick, good call with Life Without Buildings - I never did pick that up...

Please, keep the ideas flowing ...

Draw Tipsy, ya hack. (dave225.3), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 13:56 (twenty years ago)

Ian - can you recommend The Chelsea Sessions or The Hangman's Beautiful Daughter as being at all comparable to 5000 spirits or layers of the onion? Those two are available at the library...

Draw Tipsy, ya hack. (dave225.3), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 14:00 (twenty years ago)

Talking Heads - Speaking in Tongues

Rob Uptight. (Rob Uptight.), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 14:15 (twenty years ago)

mayo thompson's corky's debt to his father

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 14:19 (twenty years ago)

(although im not ian)

hangman's beautiful daughter is really great and worthwhile, but 5000 spirits is the best. HBD goes a little off the deep end for my tastes, whereas 5KS hovers on that beautiful edge between completely bonkers and catchy/immediate.

petesmith (plsmith), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 14:22 (twenty years ago)

Sonic Youth, Sonic Nurse
Pretty much the only album I listened to last fall in London. Tube rides, bus trips, in class, on flights, anything. I really love that album even if most SY fans wouldn't put it at the top of their list.

Screw it, I'll put two. Liquid Swords is always in constant rotation.

Daniel Peterson (polkaholic), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 14:41 (twenty years ago)

First thing that came to mind was Elton John's Captain Fantastic and the Brown-Dirt Cowboy, but I'd probably end up taking London Calling. Check out Captain Fantastic, though.

WillS, Wednesday, 10 August 2005 14:48 (twenty years ago)

Wow, this is actually a good question. It's actually a set, but I'll go with:

John Coltrane: The Complete Live at the Village Vanguard

Hurting (Hurting), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 14:56 (twenty years ago)

also not ian...but

the chelsea sessions are worth it as a nice mix of hangmans and 5000, but the performances are less honed. it's probably more interesting after hearing the other two (which come packaged together quite regularly)...i'd also recomend the self titled album. less round the bend than hangman's/5000 but still wonderful (and im a sucker for clive palmer)

b b, Wednesday, 10 August 2005 14:59 (twenty years ago)

Gang Of Four - Entertainment

John Justen (johnjusten), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 14:59 (twenty years ago)

disc 3 of the original 4 disc Led Zep box set....maybe...I dunno...this is one of those impossible questions...actually maybe I'd go for that original Mission of Burma comp that Rykodisc did...

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 15:49 (twenty years ago)

Dr C, I have that Joe Meek Cd on my desk & haven't listened to it yet! So that's my afternoon, I guess...

Allen Baekeland (Allen Baekeland), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 18:30 (twenty years ago)

Hampton Grease Band's Music To Eat, 'cause I can imagine myself getting really sick of Trout Mask Replica or Interstellar Space in ten years or so. (Tho they've both sustained me for 15+ so far.)

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 18:46 (twenty years ago)

My knee-jerk answer is Loveless but if I really thought about it, it would probably be something classical and extremely complex so that I wouldn't get bored with my one single CD.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 18:57 (twenty years ago)

my backup is the soundtrack to once upon a time in the west

gear (gear), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 19:17 (twenty years ago)

which is probably the only soundtrack that almost makes me weep.

gear (gear), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 19:17 (twenty years ago)

isn't this "what's your favourite album" in disguise?

robert wyatt - rock bottom

phil turnbull (philT), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 19:36 (twenty years ago)

isn't this "what's your favourite album" in disguise?

It might be . but I'm more looking for what has a universal (to you, if that makes sense) appeal - it may not be your favorite record, but the one you .. oh fuckit, it's "give me something good to listen to" in disguise, but if your taste sucks, I only want you to post one suggestion... !

Draw Tipsy, ya hack. (dave225.3), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 20:10 (twenty years ago)

I think I'm gonna have to go for Mellon Collie. Sorry, Pumpkins haters.

Roadkill Bingo (Roadkill Bingo), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 20:35 (twenty years ago)

seeing PhilT here made me change my mind to Acnalbasac Noom by Slapp Happy.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 20:39 (twenty years ago)

isn't this "what's your favourite album" in disguise?

not for me - i couldn't listen to Tilt or Laughing Stock (my two "favourites") over and over again.

i don't know what my actual answer is. Maybe Grace.

jed_ (jed), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 20:41 (twenty years ago)

Oh, Acnalbasac Noom would be seconded if I hadn't already voted for The Fall. What a GREAT album.

Sweet - Desolation Boulevard

jim wentworth (wench), Thursday, 11 August 2005 01:52 (twenty years ago)

Another Green World - Brian Eno. You can rawk to it, you can chill to it...

Aaron A., Thursday, 11 August 2005 02:01 (twenty years ago)

Glenn Gould's 2nd recording of the Goldberg Variations. Or the best of Toots and the Maytals.

casey (t. fiend), Thursday, 11 August 2005 02:11 (twenty years ago)

Shishimumu - Phantom Buffalo.
I mean, if you're looking for connection. The disk shimmers. and beautifully.

audrey g (Mox twleve), Thursday, 11 August 2005 04:48 (twenty years ago)

"I'm more looking for what has a universal (to you, if that makes sense) appeal - it may not be your favorite record, but the one you .. oh fuckit, it's "give me something good to listen to" in disguise"

Aaaah. OK, cancel Trout Mask Replica.... and someone's already said London Calling; so I'll go with Cut by The Slits.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Thursday, 11 August 2005 07:27 (twenty years ago)

Get Down Shep by the Barron Knights.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 11 August 2005 07:30 (twenty years ago)

If I "had to choose one record to listen to for an indefinite period of time" 'though it would still be Beefheart.

(x-post)

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Thursday, 11 August 2005 07:31 (twenty years ago)

MINUTEMEN- double nickels on the dime

chad (chad), Thursday, 11 August 2005 07:55 (twenty years ago)

"Get Down Shep by the Barron Knights."

The 7" version or the extended 12" disco mix?

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Thursday, 11 August 2005 07:59 (twenty years ago)

Dunno about the 12", but there was certainly an extended 12" disco mix of their 1982 Xmas hit "Buffalo Bill's Last Scratch."

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 11 August 2005 08:00 (twenty years ago)

Maybe so, but it's still nothing like as good as the classic "Get Down Shep", is it?

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Thursday, 11 August 2005 08:02 (twenty years ago)

It is, however, arguably better than "Buffalo Gals" by Malcolm McLaren.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 11 August 2005 08:03 (twenty years ago)

Far less irritating certainly.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Thursday, 11 August 2005 08:08 (twenty years ago)

Tindersticks.Waiting For The Moon....nice for late afternoon listening

Jacob Sanders (LolVStein), Thursday, 11 August 2005 09:38 (twenty years ago)

but I'm more looking for what has a universal (to you, if that makes sense) appeal - it may not be your favorite record

Yeah, that's what I figured. My favourite album is the debut by Breathless, but if I were to listen to any record over and over again, it'd either be Sleep No More as I mentioned as my pick way upthread, or maybe Gang of Four's Solid Gold.

Ian Riese-Moraine: a casualty of social estrangement. (Eastern Mantra), Thursday, 11 August 2005 11:52 (twenty years ago)

If anyone else is using this thread to get ideas, I think I decided this morning that the Go-Betweens 'Send Me a Lullaby' would be the one I pick .. it's not their best, and maybe not my favorite of theirs, but the one I most often want to hear as a whole record.

Draw Tipsy, ya hack. (dave225.3), Thursday, 11 August 2005 12:13 (twenty years ago)
