Without wanting to fall foul of the Absolutes thread on ILX, people who play bongoes along to dance music are cunts.

ricardo villalobos to thread.

All I can picture with this scenario are dreadlocked Levellers-loving Planet Dog enthusiasts.

That one song by 2 Live Something or Live Something Or Other

and the song was called Something Dance

in the video they play bongo-esque drums on top of this trance tune

it had a 2 in it, I know that much..

AHA! Safri Duo - Played A Live

ah, turns out those aren't bongos. Semi-similar tho. Worth noting now that all this has been committed to screen.

Cheek0 (Cheek0), Thursday, 11 August 2005 22:54 (twenty years ago)

a few whiles ago i was completely obliterated standing in front of matt dear playing and some guy after him was setting up in front and had set his bongos there. i proceeded to annoy the shit out of dreadlock guy from telefon tel aviv and probably everyone else by playing along with the bongos so hard i bruised my palms.

TS: minimal techno + bongos vs. drum n' bass + tabla

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 12 August 2005 00:40 (twenty years ago)

Australian act Little Beasties (who are released on Music For Freaks) play lots of drums including bongos when they perform live. The end result is like Luciano's Live @ Weetamix... only, like, actually live.

damn. anyhow, browse around that set of pics and you'll see villalobos banging away on a bongo-like digital pad.

manuel (manuel), Friday, 12 August 2005 04:54 (twenty years ago)

it's really annoying if you are trying to do a mix and some dreadlocked goon is banging away slightly out of time. maybe if it was a really good bongo player it might be bearable, but it usuallly isn't

doctor d, Friday, 12 August 2005 08:14 (twenty years ago)

This happened at Superpitcher in Grant Park a few weeks ago!

deej.., Friday, 12 August 2005 08:18 (twenty years ago)

i don't mind it when there's some dreadlock banty at a free party playing bongos along to hard techno (never to drum n bass tho cuz it's just sounds wack), but they never ever let anyone else have a go! you ask them and they kind of just silently stair at you and wobble their heads about like the churchill dog as if they're really freaking you out man, like sooo darkside boss. fuck off give me the bongos mate you're crap.

beatles fan, Friday, 12 August 2005 15:28 (twenty years ago)

hahah - that's exactly what happened to me!

But seriously, me and Gravel Puzzleworth witnessed some incredible samba band playing along to techno a couple of months ago - def the highlight of the night.

dog latin (dog latin), Friday, 12 August 2005 15:30 (twenty years ago)

i'd kill to see ricky v playing bongos over a minimal set, i love the crisp snaps on "alsbalduin"

beatles fan, Friday, 12 August 2005 15:34 (twenty years ago)

When I think of the idea of minimal techno + improv bongo drumming, I dunno, it seems kind of like a sound that wouldn't be enough, somehow. Like, there's some element missing. I think if you were to add a didgeridoo player to this ensemble it would be kind of conceptually complete, wouldn't it?

Pashmina (Pashmina), Friday, 12 August 2005 15:34 (twenty years ago)

I actually witnessed this when Superpitcher played at Summerdance a couple of weeks ago. He was playing and there was this doofus standing in the audience near the front with a huge bongo strapped on, playing along to all the minimal techno, presumably in a pathetic bid to pick up chicks. Fortunately the music was loud enough that it was hard to hear the bongo.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 12 August 2005 15:37 (twenty years ago)

tho i guess it veers into squarepusher territory, everyone always tells how amazing his live bass over dj sets are but i'm not sure. and it's almost always in a "it's amazing cos he can actually PLAY the bass!!" sense which turns me off a bit.

xxpost

beatles fan, Friday, 12 August 2005 15:37 (twenty years ago)

to be fair, tom jenkinson is pretty good at playing bass. good enough to get up on stage and do it. but yr average hairy bongo dude adds nothing to the sound, seeing as generally he/she is shit

see also: euro clapping people. thanks, this house music, i was having a really difficult time working out this insane 4/4 beat! its great that you are clapping along, guiding me thru the rhythm! cut through that complex thump thump thump thump! clap some more! please!

ambrose (ambrose), Friday, 12 August 2005 15:41 (twenty years ago)

i guess the problem is that because hippy dude is not actually the dj and therefore not sole controller of the vibe, hippy dude always tries to do mad patterns and shit over the top in an attempt to become center of the vibe when really as evinced on "alsbalduin" a few off beat snaps sounds alot better.

beatles fan, Friday, 12 August 2005 15:43 (twenty years ago)

when y'all say "bongos", you just mean "some type of hand drum" right?
not actual bongos:

m0stly pedantic (m0stly clean), Friday, 12 August 2005 15:58 (twenty years ago)

Note to ILM: please stop referring to all hand drums as "bongos"

Note to European people: there are beats inbetween the downbeats, you can clap on them. Please research.

xpost!

note to anyone: dont clap on the down beats, or the off beats. keep your hands by your side and dont make any sudden movements

TS: minimal techno + bongos vs. drum n' bass + tabla

drum n bass + tabla is one of my favoritest things to listen to in the whole world!

fe zaffe (fezaffe), Friday, 12 August 2005 16:54 (twenty years ago)

four months pass...
so is there a really really tech-y deep house album / comp / mix / whatever? with plenty of hand drums but no latin or jazz flavours? or wouldnt that be deep house anymore?

Yawn (Wintermute), Thursday, 29 December 2005 17:19 (twenty years ago)

There could be whole Sunday evenings of that stuff at 40 W 8 St in NYC if anyone cares to check and report back.
