Supposedly there is a piece forthcoming on the set in both Stylus and The Big Takeover. It's my hope that the writers use the set as a way-in to a discussion of post-punk beyond the 5-10 "name" bands/musicians who get over-cited in contemporary pop reviews.
Anyone been working on similar sets?

Again, great set, are u working on another?
― mentalist (mentalist), Friday, 12 August 2005 01:52 (twenty years ago)
If nobody picks up and runs with 1979 or 1982 in the next couple of years, and I haven't gotten married or more involved in useful community affairs after business hours, I may look at them more seriously.

I was hoping that you hadn't though. I didn't realize I had such telepathic powers. Wonder what I should hope for next.

Ah, it's a constant in my car, this one.
Wonder what happened...
― Mark G, Tuesday, 19 June 2007 11:35 (eighteen years ago)
this was stolen from my car actually
thankfully i had ripped the entire thing :/
― cutty, Tuesday, 19 June 2007 11:40 (eighteen years ago)
but the booklet... oh the booklet
The booklet helps, certainly.
― Mark G, Tuesday, 19 June 2007 11:58 (eighteen years ago)
I so want this. Who will trade with me?
― Kevin John Bozelka, Tuesday, 19 June 2007 13:24 (eighteen years ago)
when's the 1982 set coming out?
― tylerw, Tuesday, 19 June 2007 13:51 (eighteen years ago)
i think ian started going backwards after all that. then he started mixing wild and farflung freeflowing webs of stuff together for a while. now he's among the ages, lost.
― andrew m., Tuesday, 19 June 2007 15:30 (eighteen years ago)
Or he'll just post here later today or something. Was thinking about this set the other day.
― Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 19 June 2007 15:32 (eighteen years ago)
was there ever an article in stylus magazine? i don't remember. but that could well be me and my brain which has more holes than a fishing net.
and is the 1981 project finished? i remember - this time for sure - being on the waiting list.
― alex in mainhattan, Tuesday, 19 June 2007 16:13 (eighteen years ago)
I'm on the waiting list too, I'm pretty sure.
I'm willing to shell out some REAL AMERICAN DOLLARS for this.
― Z S, Tuesday, 19 June 2007 17:50 (eighteen years ago)
that '81 box inspired friend who borrowed it to put together a 12 disc prog box and another friend to put together a 20 disc heavy box spanning from '66-90. totally wild. there are no boxes yet, but i'm sure that production work will happen soon enough.
― fukasaku tollbooth, Tuesday, 19 June 2007 19:17 (eighteen years ago)
Last I heard from I.M. back in February, he said he hadn't been into post-punk much in the last six months, which I found surprising. Sent me some links with like, recordings of ancient 78-speed phonograph records on them, and old blues recordings from the 30's...*shrugs* Maybe he just wanted to prove he wasn't a one-trick pony.

obviously your friends should post these track lists for those of us who are dying of curiosity
― Matos W.K., Wednesday, 20 June 2007 07:17 (eighteen years ago)
xpost not so surprising, I would have thought. To trawl through *that much* source material would need the stamina of John Peel on a 'good' day. every day. For as long as it takes.
― Mark G, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 08:33 (eighteen years ago)
i'll ask about tracklistings. i may have to email you some spreadsheets!
― fukasaku tollbooth, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 10:36 (eighteen years ago)
i'm still surprised that this sort of archiving didn't take off after I.M. got the ball rolling. but i guess what mark g. says is true that this sort of project is an exhaustive/exhausting undertaking.
― fukasaku tollbooth, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 11:36 (eighteen years ago)
It definitely felt (in retrospect) like a snapshot of one person's obsession at a specific moment. It's hard to follow up, I guess.
If I.M. were doing this now, would he have even bothered with CD-Rs and just put it up on Rapidshare instead?
― mike a, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 21:12 (eighteen years ago)
didn't bimble get into a fight with ian?
― cutty, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 21:13 (eighteen years ago)
I can't see why he would, since he could have done that in the first place. and it's not as if this project was unprecedented on ILM, given all the CD-R Go!'s that preceded it.
― Matos W.K., Wednesday, 20 June 2007 21:22 (eighteen years ago)
I had the same thought re rapidshare but this is a different undertaking, esp. when you factor in the production work that went into the box and booklet. I'm hoping that these guys I know use rapidshare and upload artwork to download to keep costs down and sanity intact.
― fukasaku tollbooth, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 22:33 (eighteen years ago)
like ZS, i am ready to shell out real american dollars for this. even just to get mp3's of all of these songs.

Whoa, crazy thread. From which I for some reason got a blog visit today? Who knows.
Anyway, seems as good a place as any to mention that there are now seven of the nine main mixes up at my blog, at the link Caek points to above ( http://musicophilia.wordpress.com/tag/1981/ ). The only ones left to go are the 'Ice' and the 'Fire' mixes. Also, did a three-mix series of "women of post-punk" type mixes that seem to have gone over well with the '1981' crowd.

i was listening to Convertible and Heart last night, for the first time!! almost all of it sounded great to me. can only say thanks again.

That's a lot of 1981 listening for one night. Glad you liked most of it nonetheless. Thank you!

FYI for anyone who is keeping up with the 1981 mixes as they become available at my Musicophilia blog:
For the next, oh, fifty weekends or so, it’s my intention to post several tracks from the ‘Briefcase‘ disc of the ‘1981′ box set. To recap briefly: ‘1981′ was a 10-disc set; nine were themed mixes (and can be found at Musicophilia); and the 10th was an alphabetically-arranged mp3-disc catch-all, including over 250 tracks by an additional 230+ bands not heard on the main mixes. The crazy thing about 1981 (representative of post-punk in general) is that there almost isn’t a bottom of the barrel–certainly the tracks on the ‘Briefcase’ disc don’t scrape it, in my opinion. So if you like what you’ve heard on the mixes proper, you’ll probably want to keep tabs at Musicophilia Daily.
That'll be every weekend, at Musicophilia Daily
I think it'll be fun to revisit them this way : )
