These 2 songs were likely shooting for the same audience, and were released within a year of each other. Who wins?

Queensryche seems more sincere.

I'm not sure that I buy that it was exactly the same audience -- Mama I'm Coming Home equals typical power ballad fo the ladies, doesn't it? Whereas Silent Lucidity seems more like a play for the Pink Floyd-style pseudo-depth that both dudes and chicks meditate on but can also make out to.

Silent Lucidity was the other song that got me into playing guitar.

the first? the "Pink Floyd-style pseudo-depth" of Wish You Were Here.

I only had an acoustic at the time, so it was perfect.

"Silence Lucidity" was a cringe-worthy stab at "Comfortably Numb" with a ridiculous narrative about mind-control. Just a wee bit too close to Dream Theatre and their awful ilk for my taste.

I'll go with Oz.

I thought it was about a child witnessing the murder of his mother??

tho i confess that i liked the bridge to "Road To Nowhere" better than all the rest of the 'em

I've given it some thought, and Queensryche wins for me, mostly for that part in the middle with the slowed-down monologue.

billstevejim (billstevejim), Friday, 12 August 2005 20:58 (twenty years ago)

that there queensryche is thinkin' man's metal.

i'm so pissed i missed out on their double-set "greatest hits"/"mindcrime in entirety" tour last year due to chronic brokeness.

Were it only that simple.

silent lucdty seemed to be everywhere. and fuck it was horrible. i remeber walking by a televison at a Virsgin store or something and then on the way home in a cab and then on a soap opera. all in the same morning, christ

I prefer Ozzie, I way prefer Ozzie. But I like "Silent Lucidity" more than "Mama." It reminds me of a 90s update of Zebra's "What's behind the Door?" That Gospel music mystical strain mostly absent from too much uptight white people pop and rock.

Savoy Brown, Saturday, 13 August 2005 12:09 (twenty years ago)

Silent Lucidity.

That was one of the last metal bands to have a hit without a DJ, rapper, or some stupid misspelled name. Definitely the end of an era.

Oddly enough "Silent Lucidity" completely passed me by at the time, I still don't think I've ever heard the song in full.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 13 August 2005 23:40 (twenty years ago)

two years pass...

Ozzy, not least because I LOVE songs in which the expression "mama" plays a key role. E.g. Boston's "Let Me Take You Home Tonight".

i vote for the ryche!

I don't remember starting this thread. Wait, maybe I do.. I must have been high.

I think I may switch my vote to "Mama" based on its Ozzy/Lemmy/Zak Wylde songwriting credit.. I'm pretty sure it's the only song in existance to have such a distinction. No wait.. there's actually a few others. But this is the most famous one.
