why do journos fawn over her so much?
do people just like her cos shes not popular?
cos what ive heard just sounds like slightly kitsch, artsy, but too painfully 'cool' and unaffecting regurgitated 80s electropop/90s electroclash stuff....
im not 'hating' her, i just wanna know what the fuss is about
i prefer richard x, at least theres a sense of fun with him

(xpost)

Are you sure you're not mixing up Goldfrapp with Father Dougal?

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 12 August 2005 11:31 (twenty years ago)

Well, the new Goldfrapp is lame, but the first record, "Felt Mountain," is awesome. I saw them on that tour and it was a great show. She had three microphones--one was normal, but the other two had crazy effects: one made her sound like a space banshee and the other like a possessed little kid. She was dressed in a WWII WAC uniform with pink stilettos and the orchestral parts were performed by a man dressed as a leprechaun playing an electric violin. There was a mirrorball. She had a sexy and enigmatic stage presence. I distinctly remember that when she sang the first space banshee part in "Lovely Head," still their best song, I turned around -- I was in the front -- and everyone's mouth was hanging open in astonishment. It was genuinely cool. She was an amazing performer: one minute doing those yodelly whistling parts, then singing in the James Bond voice, then suddenly she opens her mouth and a theremin comes out.

It's really disappointing, therefore, that the second and third records have been such shite.

tho, just to make one incidental point:

i prefer richard x, at least theres a sense of fun with him

Richard X does quote 'Black Cherry' as the greatest electronic pop album in years (or similar) in his Back To Mine inlay notes.

Yes, well, you can't rely on Richard X, can you?

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 12 August 2005 12:33 (twenty years ago)

He never forget my birthday, unlike you.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Friday, 12 August 2005 12:44 (twenty years ago)

How did he sign the card, Richard XXX?

Vicious Cop Kills Gentle Fool (Dada), Friday, 12 August 2005 12:46 (twenty years ago)

Felt Mountain is all ya need.
