You are nothin'
I'm for real
You see I'm rockin'
'Cuz the devil's got the deal

First verse of The Hellacopters' You're nothin' . The "devil's got the deal" bit kind of contradicts the "I'm for real" bit.

excerpts from Berlin's "Sex"

I'm a man - I'm a goddess
I'm a man - Well I'm a virgin
I'm a man - I'm a blue movie
I'm a man - I'm a bitch
I'm a man - I'm a geisha
I'm a man - I'm a little girl
I'm a man - I'm a boy
I'm a man - Well I'm your mother
I'm a man - I'm a one night stand
I'm a man - Am I bi
I'm a man - I'm a slave
I'm a man - I'm a little girl
I'm a man - I'm a teaser
I'm a man - Well I'm a virgin
I'm a man - I'm a one night stand
I'm a man - I'm a drug
I'm a man - Well I'm your slave
I'm a man - I'm a dream divine
I'm a man - I'm a goddess
I'm a man - I'm a hooker
I'm a man - I'm a blue movie
I'm a man - I'm a slut
I'm a man - I'm a geisha
I'm a man - I'm babe
I'm a man - I'm a dream divine

"IT DOESN'T MAKE A DIFFERENCE IF WE MAKE IT OR NOT/

We'll give it a shot/
Whooahh, we're halfway there/
Whoo-oooahh, livin' on a prayer/
TAKE MY HAND, WE'LL MAKE IT I SWEAR"

That really bugged Jimmy Guterman in his "Worst Rock 'n' Roll Records Ever" book, but it's the best lines Bon Jovi ever sang, succinctly summing up what's-her-name's confused desperation. See, she really does want to make it, but the odds are so stacked against them, with what's-his-name pawning his guitar and whatnot, that she appeals to the worst case scenario and tries to believe it doesn't matter. Oh, but it does. She knows it.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Sunday, 14 August 2005 21:36 (twenty years ago)

Destroyer owns this thread. (Ok, maybe in line after Eminem.) The "no, wait, I lied" line from What Road? already quoted is just the beginning. Not always contradictory but always cancelling himself out, at least.

Taking a couple quick samples per album:

City of Daughters: "Think globally, act nobly/ The ties that bind us blind us/ I know that's what they told you/ And you know that that's not true" (No Cease Fires [Crimes Against the State of Our Love, Baby]);

Thief: "Watch the parade in progress/ Even if you don't believe in progress. ... And she wants you/ And she wants you/ And she wants you to go" (The Way of Perpetual Roads)
or alternatively: "As I sat back and watched what I thought would ensue/ Not ensue" ... "You take back the curse but the girl just gets/ Every rip-off artist to paint a picture/ Of a world at war/ When the world was not at war/ When the world was not at war..." (Thief)

Streethawk: "We spent the better part of the day/ Waiting for the wave to hit our side of town/ It didn't" (The Bad Arts); "Paradise was fine/ What's yours was mine/Collaborators fuck us every time" (Beggars Might Ride); "Virgin without a memory" (Virgin with a Memory"); "And another West Coast morning/ Fuck it, I'm warning you/ Can look, you can touch/ But no, not that much" (The Very Modern Dance); "See, apparently, our bloodlines are botched beyond redemption/ Luckily, you don't believe in redemption" (Helena);

This Night: "Now Mile-End is claiming, 'You're one of those!/ Take off those clothes! You're one of them!'/ But you won't" (Here Comes The Night); "Granted, you could take this as a sign that there is life outside the mine/ And maybe things are looking up/ But, Buttercup/ The form insists on rupture and therefore we break" (Crystal Country); "You had a great idea/ How can you have a great idea/ When the girls back on the continent, they won't even see you..." (Students Carve Hearts out of Coal); "You shouldn't hurt the ones you love/ Unless you really want to" (Self-Portrait with Thing)

Your Blues: "A boulevardier might say, 'Tomorrow's another day'/ Alright, yes, but it's also just another mess" (An Actor's Revenge); "You thought you'd heard of everything/ Hell no" (From Oakland to Warsaw).

carl w (carl w), Sunday, 14 August 2005 22:18 (twenty years ago)

You thought you'd heard of everything/ Hell no

This reads like a dialogue than self-contradiction.

Come to think of it, all of these are more like caveats.

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Sunday, 14 August 2005 22:24 (twenty years ago)

Caveats is a good term for them - very Canadian, too. Dan should title an album Caveats. On the other hand, some other examples given in this thread aren't contradictions either, just chiasmus (chiasmuses?) at best. (eg. "I needed you more when you wanted us less.")

I think the standard Destroyer move is - as the name advertises - to set up a thought or emotion and then criticize/demolish/interrupt/reverse/interrogate it, plus generous sprinklings of nonsequiturs.

It's contradiction in a dialectical sense but usually sans synthesis.

Tape Store (Tape Store), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 14:38 (twenty years ago)

I want to say "Long Tall Glasses" by Leo Sayer, but there is an extra bit that breaks up the transition from "You know I can't dance/You know I can't dance" to "Of course I can dance/ Of course I can dance."

k/l (Ken L), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 14:40 (twenty years ago)

That fucking awful James Cunt song has a line about he's "got a plan" only then he says he doesn't "know what to do". This man was IN THE ARMED FORCES.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 14:51 (twenty years ago)

Ken, you have my condolences for being able to summon lyrics from "Long Tall Glasses (I Can Dance)."

Meantime, I'll add Mr. Mojo:
"Five to one, baby / One in five" -- a five to one ratio would be one in six.
