The song that refuses to die.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Friday, 12 August 2005 23:15 (twenty years ago)

It's very easy to forget how awesome the original actually was/is!

It's a real peak moment on that Mei Lwun mix I love so much - which is saying something.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 12 August 2005 23:24 (twenty years ago)

it's become a running joke, how hated/loved it is, at our club. we are all so sick of it and yet since I felt one of my clubmates was overstating the case a bit and acting as though he never liked it, and also since "PLAY DROP THE PRESSURE" is what me and my friend shouted at every single gig at Glastonbury, or "PLAY THE ONE THAT GOES MOTHERFUCKERS GONNA DROP THE PRESSURE" (especially Mylo, where people were going "YEAH PLAY IT" and others still looking at us and thinking "so out of touch"), anyway I played it about a month ago as a result of all this, and the result? euphoric crowd reaction which rapidly dissipated into sort of half assed dancing by the second build up .

So I guess it is played out.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 13 August 2005 09:53 (twenty years ago)

There isn't a Rex The Dog remix of this song is there? There's a Felix one but P2P shows no sign of Rex. Or is this new?

Affectian (Affectian), Saturday, 13 August 2005 11:36 (twenty years ago)

Yeah Pete Tong played it on the 5th Aug @ Cafe Mambo Ibiza.

See track listing:-

The mashed-up version with 'Dr Beat' is being officially released any minute now isn't it? Gah

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Saturday, 13 August 2005 13:19 (twenty years ago)

"Dr Beat", the Miami Sound Machine song? Oh lord, when will this madness cease?

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Saturday, 13 August 2005 13:46 (twenty years ago)

They're releasing that?! It's been knocking about for over a year now...

Citypark, Saturday, 13 August 2005 17:21 (twenty years ago)

Why not? They must have re-released "Destroy Rock n Roll" like 8 times.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Saturday, 13 August 2005 18:23 (twenty years ago)

just last night, I listened to tiefschwarz's misch masch & the-mei-lwun-mix-that-tim-loves-so-much & it was used pretty blatantly in both! haven't heard it in months & months & months; didn't mind it too much, actually.

(ps: tim, d'you have a tracklisting for the mei lwun mix? can you ID the track playing about 30 minutes in?)

etc, Sunday, 14 August 2005 01:09 (twenty years ago)

Uno Records Mix Tracklisting:

Mei Lwun - Underworld Thang
Andy Caldwell - Don't You Love Me
Mister J - Hot Chix
Mei Lwun - Too Late
The Streaks - The Feeling (The Post Rave Dub)
The Debonairs - Miami Vice
Chicken Lips - He Not In/The Fog - Been A Long Time (Accapella)
Mylo - Drop The Pressure
Andy Caldwell - Pushin' (Andy's Dub Perspective)
Scissor Sisters - Comfortably Numb (ATOC Dub)
Ean Golden - Golden Theme (Mei Lwun Edit)
Yosh - Do Watcha Do (Andy & Mei Lwun Remix)

As almost all the tracks have vocals it's fairly easy to work out what everything is.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Sunday, 14 August 2005 01:54 (twenty years ago)

Heard the Rex the Dog mix tonight, 1 word. Awesome!!!

I loved the original but youre right, massively overplayed and now bores me but this is far enough removed to be a true peak time stomper at any dirty house night. I will find it and I WILL play it.

DirtyLittleFunker, Tuesday, 16 August 2005 23:42 (twenty years ago)

i still fucking love this song!! and it ALWAYS WORKS, it's almost too easy

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 23:48 (twenty years ago)

YSI - now!

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 09:20 (twenty years ago)

i'm talking about the original btw, is that what you want?

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 14:35 (twenty years ago)

The Rex mix would be a good YSI target, I'd imagine the original is pretty accessible...

mike h. (mike h.), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 14:46 (twenty years ago)

yeah.. i want it too.

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 14:46 (twenty years ago)

what slocki said.

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 14:47 (twenty years ago)

rex is playing here on Saturday, who is he?? omg!!!! if I wasn't so scared about Cuba being used as a base for launching nuclear missiles by the Russians I'd be even more psyched.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 14:49 (twenty years ago)

just joking I do want to know

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 14:49 (twenty years ago)

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 14:52 (twenty years ago)

Rob Boulton, Thursday, 18 August 2005 16:49 (twenty years ago)

Rob Boulton, Thursday, 18 August 2005 21:21 (twenty years ago)

Errr... I'd love to send it to you... unfortunately I'm on this thread waiting for someone to yousendit!

Meanwhile, I did download a track which claims it is a Rex The Dog remix of Eric Prydz 'Call On Me'... It didn't really sound a great deal like Rex The Dog though.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Friday, 19 August 2005 08:42 (twenty years ago)

Oh - Rex The Dog is playing live in Brighton on Saturday the 17th of Septmeber if anyone is interested (and it's free to get in before 9pm - although you may have to buy some probably rubbish drinks in the meantime).

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Friday, 19 August 2005 09:35 (twenty years ago)

Chewshabadoo, you are a big tease.

I've seen this mp3 on Ssk but it is listed as being taken from a live DJ set. If I manage to get it I'll YSI it.

Affectian (Affectian), Friday, 19 August 2005 09:49 (twenty years ago)

Chewshabadoo, you are a big tease.

Sorry, should have x-posted it, I was replying to this:

i'm talking about the original btw, is that what you want?

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Friday, 19 August 2005 10:32 (twenty years ago)

YOU!

XMAS!

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Friday, 19 August 2005 16:09 (twenty years ago)

Oh, I'm listening to the remix of Eric Prydz and it's good, definitley can hear a Rex feel - but also definitly a remix, and thankfully sounds absolutely nothing like Call On Me, but is ultimately his weakest work.

Link: http://s17.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=12FMYQB83FZ8630P2UZTF735XX

Still haven't found the Mylo remix yet though.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Friday, 19 August 2005 16:52 (twenty years ago)

Here's a 3 and a half minute 'live rip', purporting to be Rex's Drop The Pressure remix:

Stoleyourbike!! thats the kiddy!! :-) thanks so much.

Just needs to be longer lol.

Nice one stoleyourbike!

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Saturday, 20 August 2005 16:41 (twenty years ago)

That's more like it!

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Saturday, 20 August 2005 16:43 (twenty years ago)

It is kind of rubbish isn't it?

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 20 August 2005 18:47 (twenty years ago)

No.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Monday, 22 August 2005 14:22 (twenty years ago)

The vocal cut-up aside, the Rex mix is pure mondo.

BARMS, Tuesday, 6 September 2005 18:22 (twenty years ago)

this is really good but it would be much more impressive to hear a dj do it live.

tricky (disco stu), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 23:05 (twenty years ago)

(w/r/t to the mash-up with miami sound machine)

tricky (disco stu), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 23:06 (twenty years ago)

I can put "Dr Beat" and "Drop The Pressure" together in my head well enough, without needing to sit through 7 minutes of someone doing it for me. Good mash-ups rely on juxtaposing the unexpected, not the bleedin' obvious...

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 10:57 (twenty years ago)

this 12 is the end of electrohouse

(not really, but it is crap)

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 8 September 2005 09:34 (twenty years ago)

God I remember Matt was thinking of playing the original 'Dr Pressure' bootleg when he DJ'd at Club FT last year - but didn't after we both poo-pooed it for it's obviousness and that sense of trying too hard (not that it's stopped me personally in the past). I can't believe Mylo rates it so much himself.

Still amused tho that radio and TV aren't/can't edit out the 'motherfuckers'

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Thursday, 8 September 2005 09:41 (twenty years ago)

Since when was obviousness any kind of barrier to playing something at Club FT??

(In this case though you might be right. It's....OK, but just play either of the originals eh?)

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 8 September 2005 09:53 (twenty years ago)

Well, don't play 'Drop The Pressure', EVER AGANE...it's gone the way of 'Hey Ya' and 'Crazy In Love' for me. I guess it would still probably pack the dancefloor...but I guess I'm not really interested in that ;)

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Thursday, 8 September 2005 12:52 (twenty years ago)

Not really feeling the bootleg, it starts off well but doesn't go anywhere.

The Rex The Dog remix is still ace though.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Thursday, 8 September 2005 13:17 (twenty years ago)

We've only ever played it once Steve! Admittedly that was last month. And we did also play Hey Ya.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 8 September 2005 13:22 (twenty years ago)

Matt did actually play the original 'Drop The Pressure' when he DJ'd at Club FT tho.

Naturally I disapproved of the Hey Ya experiment.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Thursday, 8 September 2005 13:34 (twenty years ago)

ronan otm.

stirmonster (stirmonster), Thursday, 8 September 2005 13:37 (twenty years ago)

no way, i actually like the mash-up more than the rex mix! (to be honest i like it mostly because it makes me nostgalic)

brandnew, Thursday, 8 September 2005 17:17 (twenty years ago)

uh, with regards to the people saying the Dr. Pressure remix marks the end of Electro-House, that remix is coming up on a year old already so what exactly is your point. did it die when the guys who made the mix first posted the mp3 to the Loopz forum? I played the song at the See Sound lounge in late 2004, in a set with Rex/Annie etc. to a crowd that didn't know about any of that stuff. Electro-House is more of a trend than a bonafide genre anyway (still filed under Electroclash in some shops). why didn't Sasha's inclusion of a Playgroup remix mark the death of Electro-House? France is all "Shit, le bombs!"

biz, Thursday, 8 September 2005 17:29 (twenty years ago)

the my electrohouse comp looks pretty good actually.

tricky (disco stu), Thursday, 8 September 2005 17:34 (twenty years ago)

I think it is just marketing. What is electroclash? A name made up to sell records. Which is fine. If people buy Martinez because it is labelled electrohouse and electrohouse is trendy, fine by me.

brandnew, Thursday, 8 September 2005 17:42 (twenty years ago)

Michael Mayer will never make an electro house record.
He's a genius ...

seenitall, Thursday, 8 September 2005 19:19 (twenty years ago)

Push communications? What's that? Steve Bug may know something about it ...

rittekid, Thursday, 8 September 2005 19:22 (twenty years ago)

that tracklisting is good, surely not a cash in, too obscure??

the new get physical is brilliant by the way, really really good, I take back all my snide comments about English producers! It has "Piccadilly Circus" which some people might recognise as the sort of clubbier less proggy Luciano type track off Body Language, but also a new track, the name of which escapes me right now, which is real vintage GPM electro-disco, a brilliant riff kind of dominates, really goofy italo house.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 8 September 2005 21:02 (twenty years ago)

"The Arrival", it's great! Sounds like Rex the Dog, somewhat.

JoB (JoB), Thursday, 8 September 2005 21:55 (twenty years ago)

The record is called "Piccadilly Circuits", before people get confused. It's by William Threlfall aka Williams (aka Willzoid), his e-mail address is on his website so I just mailed to ask if he's Rex the Dog... :-)

JoB (JoB), Thursday, 8 September 2005 21:58 (twenty years ago)

This is my hackneyed attempt at a Rex The Dog rip-off:

rex the dog bootleg of mylo?

No such thing has been suggested here.

Anyway, Williams e-mailed me back this morning: "not rex, no. I'm flattered that you think we sound alike. regards, williams"

JoB (JoB), Friday, 9 September 2005 08:28 (twenty years ago)

surely everyone knows who Rex The Dog is now?

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Friday, 9 September 2005 08:55 (twenty years ago)

The Williams single is really good, to be fair. He's in Mylo's band? That's mental, he ought to teach his buddy some skills! And yeah it was listed as Willzoid on the Body Language mix.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 9 September 2005 09:47 (twenty years ago)

 Mylo: Drop The Pressure

This tune is so well known that we were feeling a bit wobbly all the time we were making it. We tried 5 million different ways of remixing the tune and we thought that maybe it was the end of Rex. In the end we went on holiday for 3 days and came back and started again.

A guy on an internet forum said of it: 'You can tell Rex is on autopilot already' . Yay! Success! (And now we plan to do a tune called AUTOPILOT).

Chewshabadoo's track up above is good too - why no reactions?

From the website:

December 1st 2005

We just finished a 1 hour DJ mix for James Hyman's show 'The Rinse' which is on UK radio station XFM.

We don't know when (or if) they will play it but it includes a new Rex tune 'Italian Skyline' and also our favourite synth stuff from this moment.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Friday, 23 December 2005 12:11 (twenty years ago)

so rex the dog is actually more than one person? i'm confoooosed.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Friday, 23 December 2005 13:26 (twenty years ago)

Officially one of my favourite remixes ever. I hope future stuff sounds a lot like this - crazy cut-ups, sleek smooth washes of synths 'n' snatches and little pulses of energy. It goes without saying that dude knows his way around the synths.

Who the hell do you THINK I am? I'm the goddamn Batman! (Barima), Friday, 23 December 2005 15:03 (twenty years ago)
