Alright! Good evening. Welcome once again to The El Rey. We're gonna rock & roll tonight, aren't we, mister? OK...on behalf of K-ROCK I'd like to welcome all of you here...C'mon, you saw this coming! You saw the van out front! Quit being a bunch of PUSSIES! YOU KNOW WE OWN YOU! And as a matter of fact, that's why you're here tonight, BECAUSE OF K-ROCK! So shut the fuck up. That's right...and, you know what? Pavement will be on in a minute or two but first I want to tell you about some upcoming sponsored K-ROCK...alright, we got a little life here tonight, and I want each and every one of you to stop by the truck on the way out and sign up for our mailing list, 'cause we could turn you on to some really good music. LIKE PAVEMENT, who we are responsible for turning you on to tonight, I would like to remind you. So do you want to hear about the other concerts we have coming up? They might be as cool as this one. I see an awful lot of you SUCKERS here tonight. Call and response, baby, call and response, it's an old BLUES trick. I learned it at the house of BLUES. Yeah, K-ROCK does some shows there, too, oh, they're good ones. I hope we see you there some time REAL soon. OK, so anyway, here's a band that seven-eight years ago none of you ever heard of...UNTIL WE STARTED THE TREND! K-ROCK rides again, I think. Rides off into the sunset with your cash, your hard-earned money. That's right, and these guys...SHUT UP BOY! YOU'RE HERE ON MY TAB!!! These guys are personal friends of mine, and I got, I got their autographs on all my Pavement records...five minutes ago! What do you guys have? You don't even have any fucking...you don't even have any cups anymore! OK. SHUT-UP! Without further ado...ladies and gentlemen...the band that makes you COOL. THE BAND THAT CAME IN AND OUT TO SING! OK, we got some upcoming events I'd like to tell you about...PAVEMENT!!!!

you don't even have any cups anymore!

Also see this segment on the Slow Century DVD.

And seeing the popularity of those stupid laser pointers decline since the mid nineties is one of those things that actually gives me hope for the future.

Ugh, this is on the DVD?

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Saturday, 13 August 2005 16:43 (twenty years ago)

The joke's on you because the "annoying KROQ MC" was Rian Murphy (Drag City Records).

(also: haha @ Dr. Morbius w/r/t the linked page).

It's on the DVD. It's pretty funny. Rian Murphy is pretty funny.

No, I suspected this was a joke, I just couldn't be sure. I knew something was up right off the bat because of all the concerts I've ever been to where some guy from "sponsor" radio station had to do a little spiel, none of those dudes, NONE OF THEM ever tried to take the bait from an audience -- without fail they'd just mumble their script and leave as quickly as possible.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Saturday, 13 August 2005 21:19 (twenty years ago)

four years pass...

Ha, Murphy did this shtick again the other day at Pitchfork.

Because doing ironic humor for a crowd largely too young to get the joke is very, very funny. Granted, only for the band, Rian Murphy, and the handful of people who know who Rian Murphy is, but still very, very funny. For those 100 people. In a crowd of 18,000.

I liked Pavement's ironic joke where they pretended to be not that great live a lot better.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 20 July 2010 14:16 (fifteen years ago)

When did they do that exactly? I missed it.

Mr. Que, Tuesday, 20 July 2010 14:54 (fifteen years ago)

I took the bit at face value at first, but then suspected something was up about halfway through, and then it became funny, even though I couldn't remember how I knew the name Rian Murphy.

jaymc, Tuesday, 20 July 2010 15:16 (fifteen years ago)

I suppose that's kinda funny .. I actually always wondered if it was the K-Rock in NYC.
