On an Aphex Twin or Autechre gig, how do the fans call out the tunes they want to hear?

Orally, by title.

jcartledge (jcartledge), Sunday, 14 August 2005 10:45 (twenty years ago)

They hack into the equipment

Googley Asearch (Toaster), Sunday, 14 August 2005 10:48 (twenty years ago)

Of course the joke answer would be

A: they don't, they are too busy playing dungeons and dragons.

Googley Asearch (Toaster), Sunday, 14 August 2005 10:48 (twenty years ago)

There's a numbered ticket system.

Masked Gazza, Sunday, 14 August 2005 10:48 (twenty years ago)

They can shout 'play some Aphex acid ya c*nt!'.

moley, Sunday, 14 August 2005 10:53 (twenty years ago)

You mean you can't pronounce "∆Mi-1=-a ‡” Di[n][ ‡”F ij[n-1]+Fexti[n-1]]
n=1 j?¸C[i]"?

Lightweight.

Shockah Shockah Hey!!! (noodle vague), Sunday, 14 August 2005 10:54 (twenty years ago)

This actually came to mind when I was on a Mouse on Mard gig last night... I've been a fan of them for ten years, I own all their LPs except for the latest one, but when thinkign whether I should call out tunes, I realized I could remember the names of maybe three of them. And I had no idea how to pronounce "Schnick Schnack Meltmade" or "Twift Shoeblade". So I just danced.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Sunday, 14 August 2005 10:55 (twenty years ago)

But if you call out a pronunciation hopelessly wrong, chances are that other gig-goers will think you're shouting for some obscure track they don't know about, thus upping your gig cred.

Shockah Shockah Hey!!! (noodle vague), Sunday, 14 August 2005 10:58 (twenty years ago)

those names are straightforward dude, just sound them out

seuss, Sunday, 14 August 2005 11:04 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, but:

A) Mouse on Mars are German, maybe they're not pronounced like English, and

B) they're nonsense anyway, if I'd started to shout SHNICK SCHNACK MELTMADE!! over the crowd roar they'd probably just thought I'd just had a seizure or something.

i saw autechre live in asheville, north carolina back in may (roxymuzak was there as well). people danced!

they played in complete darkness, one long continuous set with no breaks between songs. pretty intense.

I think we should all do the "Free Bird" thing and shout Autechre titles at other bands. Go to a Decemberists show and stand in the front row yelling "P.:ntil! P.:ntil! Play P.:ntil!"

nabsicothingy, Sunday, 14 August 2005 15:50 (twenty years ago)

(How you pronounce that is you say "pee," then you stop, like you're done, and then you make a face like you were actually only pausing to separate clauses, and then you say "ntil," as in "lentil.")

nabsicothingy, Sunday, 14 August 2005 15:51 (twenty years ago)

rsdio = "rizz dee o"
cipfiter = "sifter"
calbruc = "cow brick"
melve = "dolores"

nabsicothingy, Sunday, 14 August 2005 15:55 (twenty years ago)

sussudio = "sue sue sudio oh oh"

I don't think I've ever heard a request at a live idm gig. Mind you it's been awhile since my last. So the answer is: they don't, and this alienation between producer and listener is part of their proud committment to the future.

Lukas (lukas), Sunday, 14 August 2005 22:50 (twenty years ago)

oops, Googley said it first

Lukas (lukas), Sunday, 14 August 2005 22:50 (twenty years ago)

I saw aphex live last year and he played very little recogniseable material - it was all a mashup of his "sounds" and stuff, in a relatively continuous stream that just got harder and faster as the gig went on. I suspect some people were expecting SAW or something, as some just kind of looked bored and left.

thats pretty much exactly how the autechre show i saw went.

blunt (blunt), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 00:58 (twenty years ago)

five years pass...

The "Calling out requests at gigs" thread got me thinking about this question again. Surely some fans have tried this at some point?

frogbs, Thursday, 10 March 2011 14:16 (fifteen years ago)

Tuomas, the boring answer is that Twin/Autechre gigs tend to be jammy freeform affairs with few gaps in between and zero banter between the act and the audience.

In my (limited) experience people just shout at each other in the quiet bits "ooh that sounded a bit like X but with a bit of Y in it".
