its ok
get set featuring kano, and a million other MCs is alright, pretty exciting in a generic grime posse cut sort of way
jme's serious remix is hot, sounds like its better quality then previously thought
am enjoying jme's a-b-c goo goo ga ga flow more then before
plan b sucks cock
klashnekoff is worthy but really really dull
sway is a one trick pony and not worth the price of the union jack bandanas he wears around his mouth
too much uk hip hop on this
if people cared about uk hip hop they'd all be talking about skinnyman and roots manuva, but theyre not are they?
still, plan b has to be on this doesnt he as hes on 679
surprised they didnt get annie and DFA on this too
the official company line being spouted off on the rwd site is that this is a MC compilation, not a 100% grime one
well sorry, but i dont need a 'MC compilation' on a major label, i need a grime one
save the weak PR excuses for why mediocre british rappers are on a grime album for broadsheet writers who dont know any better
k, thanx

I like Skinnyman.

Adam In Real Life (nordicskilla), Sunday, 14 August 2005 21:16 (twenty years ago)

I like Roots Manuva.

Though that does sound a bit lame, I want a grime comp - its hard to find grime where I live, run the road was one of the few things it's easy to get.

Bn1, Sunday, 14 August 2005 21:29 (twenty years ago)

skinnyman and roots manuva are both good rappers, klashnekoff is decent, so is sway, but yeah, they shouldnt really be on a grime CD. saw the tracklisting at dissensus and seems like theres some bigger tunes they could have included. ill reserve judgement til i hear the album though.

fizzle, Sunday, 14 August 2005 22:01 (twenty years ago)

Isn't Skinnyman just doing grime tunes now though? I think he must still be pissed off that he didn't get the Mercury nod.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 14 August 2005 22:20 (twenty years ago)

i like the low deep kano tune and the jme remix so i bought the sampler. is it worth buying the whole album in that case, or are those the best tunes on it?

ambrose (ambrose), Sunday, 14 August 2005 22:38 (twenty years ago)

What's British hiphop? That don't sell, and when it does sell then it doesn't sell well.

jcartledge (jcartledge), Monday, 15 August 2005 00:24 (twenty years ago)

What's British hiphop? That don't sell, and when it does sell then it doesn't sell well.

As opposed to grime!

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 15 August 2005 07:35 (twenty years ago)

whats grime? that dont sell, and when it does sell well, it sounds like puff daddy.

fizzle, Monday, 15 August 2005 08:17 (twenty years ago)

Puff Daddy being torn apart in a blender and screaming for his life.

algorhythm (uzumaki), Monday, 15 August 2005 16:32 (twenty years ago)

Just to be clear, those were Sway's words, not mine.
What goes from shiny to red ... ah, forget it.

jcartledge (jcartledge), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 00:57 (twenty years ago)

I haven't heard RTR2. I really like the Sway/Wonder track I quoted above (Call My Name), but I don't get why it's grime. This is not the first time the 'hype' 'surrounding' 'grime' has been used to flog compilations of tenuously related musics, is it?

jcartledge (jcartledge), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 01:03 (twenty years ago)

that plan b track has good lyrics but its uk hip hop, and even then its like folk-hop or something. hip hop for coldplay fans. good lyric about 'white girls wont suck my dick cos its pink' though, haha.

the sway wonder track isnt on RTR2, thats on sways own mixtape. good beat and the best thing on it.

the lady sov/wonder track on RTR2 is hot.

okokoko, Tuesday, 16 August 2005 09:48 (twenty years ago)

how bout ppl post up the rtr2 they would have curated from 2005 grime

hold tight the private caller (mwah), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 11:37 (twenty years ago)

wiley n friends - sidewinder
regal players - rude boy
akala - roll wid us rmx
stryder - underground or it's nuffin w/ roll deep
slew dem / d double - grime
lethal b / fire camp - fwd 2.1 (not the allstar leak, the new one)
skepta - private caller rmx
shots/ syer - i'm gifted
newham gens - prangman
slk - burning hot or that poxy wonder rmx
ygc - countdown riddim
fumin - backslang
essentials - bongo eyes vip vocal
jammer - murkle man outburst

like a bunch of that and then i dunno keep mic check rmx, get set and serious rmx. it beggers belief the akala rmx didnt make it onto this now that i think about it

hold tight the private caller (mwah), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 11:53 (twenty years ago)

that deekline/skinnyman/wiley tune cd go on that too, utterly naff as it is

hold tight the private caller (mwah), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 11:56 (twenty years ago)

wot no singalong?

its a bit of a minor point, but most people seem to credit "underground" as tinchy stryder - "underground", but the vunyl ive got (with the red circle logo) doesnt make any mention of that, its just "ruff sqwad - underground". is tinchy stryder trying to make a name for himself outside of ruff sqwad a la dizzee?

ambrose (ambrose), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 12:04 (twenty years ago)

oh yeah duh! i had my dispassionate professional hat on. otherwise best believe i wdve had tracks 1-20 all as singalong

hold tight the private caller (mwah), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 12:08 (twenty years ago)

yeah stryder is mooted as having a solo album in the works, last i heard going to be called 'the blessing'; and then there's 'uptown girl' of course

hold tight the private caller (mwah), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 12:11 (twenty years ago)

no r&g on that either?

i think my ideal tracklisting would be vvv similar to bossman's street anthems vol 2 which months later i still can't stop playing.

also, 'no help or handouts'.

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 12:22 (twenty years ago)

sigh yes i am trying to go by the rules of the rtr game here. in addition street anthems ws a continuous mix and not a showcase of discrete tracks - rng wd especially suffer in that context i think.

hold tight the private caller (mwah), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 12:34 (twenty years ago)

i don't think a smattering of r&g tracks would suffer from the context at all - certainly 'leave me alone', 'frontline', 'mr dj' et al are strong enough to stand up as individual tracks.

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 13:31 (twenty years ago)

D Double - Signal !!!!

Adam In Real Life (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 19:46 (twenty years ago)

Run The Road 1 just came out in Canada! It's fucking HOT.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 19:49 (twenty years ago)

Does it inspire you to form a Regina crew?

Adam In Real Life (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 19:54 (twenty years ago)

Once the bus drivers go on strike, we be mad taking over.
I know walking to work, walking to work don't know you!

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 19:56 (twenty years ago)

I was disappointed that the Streets track was just a remix of Fit Buy You Know It, since that's the one Streets song I already knew.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 19:58 (twenty years ago)

ARGH!
I've had this whole thing in my brains like tiny footprints all day!

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 18:43 (twenty years ago)

wher is everybody getting this fromme??!

stryder man is da best mc since raskit, wot !

goob, Wednesday, 17 August 2005 19:19 (twenty years ago)

Some other 2005 stuff that should get mentioned:

Venom Featuring Bruza, D Double, etc "Prawpulyn (Battery Remix)"
Crazy Titch "Alias"
Roachie "All Day Long (Vocal)"
Skepta Featuring Everyone "Private Caller 2"
Roll Deep "The Avenue (Heartache Remix)"

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 22:57 (twenty years ago)

- mmm.... i really wanted to like it but nah. (i dont remember d double on that tho?)
- dunno. wait alias produced gully w/ keisha sugababe tho yeah?
- what nngh why just roachie? not the ruff sqwad feat roll deep one? or did he just make the beat? the substandard beat? aaaah pedantry in the pantry
- is that not private caller rmx above with the diff beat?
- dear god no

'signal' really grew on me tho yes. i think after all this i feel a lot warmer towards the actual rtr2 tracklisting you know....

hold tight the private caller (mwah), Thursday, 18 August 2005 00:12 (twenty years ago)

-I'm pretty sure D Double is on it (there are "mui mui" noises at the beginning--Jamakabi is on it too I think, but my memory could be trixing me now.)
-Yeah that is "Gully" I was confused by the number of times Alias was said haha.
-Rapid produced it, but Roachie's the only MC on it. Technically it's Roll Deep vs. Ruff Sqwad though, yeah.
-Is it? It's the third track on the four track mp3 version I've got.
-Haha wait you like the Akala track better than this??!!? Weirdness.

"Signal" is great, but almost everything D Double touches is gold. Newham Generals record should be hot.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 18 August 2005 01:24 (twenty years ago)

the avenues remix is rubbish. private caller is big tho! i love that big in the video where skepta just says "oh....private caller" and it soudns totally dispassionate and weird

ambrose (ambrose), Thursday, 18 August 2005 01:28 (twenty years ago)

Haha wait do you guys actually prefer the original?!?!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 18 August 2005 01:32 (twenty years ago)

yeah of course! the remix is just a sop to all those people on the rwd forum moaning about it not being "grime" right? like, so they just took the vocal and bolted it on to a generic target tune?

or are there 2 remixes? one of them is definately pretty boring, and the original is better than any of the remixes.

ambrose (ambrose), Thursday, 18 August 2005 01:37 (twenty years ago)

The Heartache version is a completely different vocal and it's Danny Weed I'm pretty sure. And my problem with the original wasn't it not being "grime enough", it was with it completely sucking.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 18 August 2005 01:45 (twenty years ago)

Although "Uptown Girl" sounds worse, I'll give you that.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 18 August 2005 01:47 (twenty years ago)

two months pass...
what a pile of shit this turned out to be
grime must be dead

vicemagazine, Wednesday, 19 October 2005 15:22 (twenty years ago)

one month passes...
Run The Road 2 IS an excellent compilation of uk talent and its well worth going out and getting hold of.

another tune to check out is...

Newnham Generals - The Newnham Generals (Produced By Monkstar)
It might be called the anthem on some p2p networks.
