Aaron A., Sunday, 14 August 2005 21:37 (twenty years ago)

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 14 August 2005 21:41 (twenty years ago)

i want to start a band called the yukons.

sittin here la la waitin for my ya ya (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 14 August 2005 21:43 (twenty years ago)

Melvins all teh fuckin way.

Scott, you need to hear Bullhead. It's the album to beat. Also worth yr time: Gluey Porch Treatments, 10 Songs.

Ian John50n (orion), Sunday, 14 August 2005 21:44 (twenty years ago)

Ian otm!

latebloomer (latebloomer), Sunday, 14 August 2005 21:46 (twenty years ago)

The Melvins are the best band on Earth.

So them vs. anyone will come up melvins.

Unless it's like Jesus Christ and Biggie's ghost singing for Motorhead.

Whiney G. Weingarten (whineyg), Sunday, 14 August 2005 21:54 (twenty years ago)

How anyone could fail to enjoy the Melvins cover of 'Goin' Blind' sure beats me. (or indeed the awesome version of 'Halo of Flies' I've got on a live show from slsk). You know I've never really heard Mekons.

myopic_void (myopic_void), Sunday, 14 August 2005 22:02 (twenty years ago)

scott stop ripping on a band you've never heard k thx

amon (eman), Sunday, 14 August 2005 22:07 (twenty years ago)

As bands both clumsy, inept, and charming. Mekons are FAR better songwriters and are still kickin' it today.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Sunday, 14 August 2005 22:09 (twenty years ago)

Mekons, for:

- being the kings and queens of banter!
- the live version of Riot on the bside to Sporting Life
- Great Pop Things
- leading me to Gram Parsons
- The English Dancing Master
- the long list of songs and albums that I'm too lazy to add

But, I've never heard the Melvins, and never was given any information to make me interested in hearing them.

sittin here la la waitin for my ya ya (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 15 August 2005 02:16 (twenty years ago)

I vaguely respect the Mekons. I LOVE the Melvins. Yay.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 15 August 2005 02:31 (twenty years ago)

Fucking what the fuck Scott!?!? Get Eggnong right now. Like Stee Moanin' Ludlow.....

brg30 (brg30), Monday, 15 August 2005 03:29 (twenty years ago)

Mekons, because integrity is about something more than doing the same fucking thing over and over again. Mekons are one of the greatest bands of all time. See them once and you know it's true.

sympathizer (sympathizer), Monday, 15 August 2005 05:37 (twenty years ago)

Mekons. Please.

Jazzbo (jmcgaw), Monday, 15 August 2005 10:41 (twenty years ago)

Mekons, because integrity is about something more than doing the same fucking thing over and over again

Dude, have you ever actually listened to the Melvins? They can hardly be accused of only doing the same thing over and over again. (Except for songs where they do exactly that, but those songs usually rule)

Melvins, by the way.

Zack Richardson (teenagequiet), Monday, 15 August 2005 12:20 (twenty years ago)

It can be said that BOTH bands rely heavily on a certain aura of 'integrity' ('they've been doing this forever! they never got the attention they deserved! they're still at it!') which, unconsciously or not, helps to both win and retain fans above and beyond musical reasons alone. And you know, persistence is nice and all, but ultimately as a listener you have to go with what you enjoy more. If I liked both I'd say so, if I hated both I'd say so, and as it happens I'd rather listen to the Melvins.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 15 August 2005 12:59 (twenty years ago)

Mekons. Mekons. Mekons. Because each album they release feels like a small victory, while each album the Melvins release feels like the next month.

Or perhaps the Mekons for the songs they write, and the Melvins for the way they sound.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Monday, 15 August 2005 13:21 (twenty years ago)

Anyone else notice that both of these bands start with the letter "M" !?!?!!?!

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Monday, 15 August 2005 13:22 (twenty years ago)

Mekons. By far.

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Monday, 15 August 2005 13:25 (twenty years ago)

xpost - AND END WITH 'NS' OMGWTF.

(Out of curiosity -- and I *am* curious -- 'a small victory' for what? Also, most of us have been doing a TERRIBLE time explaining why it is we favor the band we do, myself included.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 15 August 2005 13:26 (twenty years ago)

well if this were actually a good thread i might feel compelled to say more, but just seems to be one of many ilm "joke" threads.

sittin here la la waitin for my ya ya (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 15 August 2005 13:32 (twenty years ago)

My love for the Mekons ain't no joke!

peepee (peepee), Monday, 15 August 2005 13:43 (twenty years ago)

x-post I guess a small victory for a band that has toiled away for years yet remains undiminished in terms of enthusiasm and talent, all without any high-profile boosters (save perhaps Jonathan Franzen) and without resorting to drone albums or remix projects. Or perhaps for epitomizing a productive collective. Or for a lot of the reasons laid out in Christgau's Langford essay from a year ago or so.

Or more specifically, the Mekons over the Melvins for splitting the difference between the Clash and the Ex.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Monday, 15 August 2005 13:50 (twenty years ago)

without resorting to drone albums or remix projects

I admit I kinda don't see how this would necessarily be a negative.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 15 August 2005 14:15 (twenty years ago)

Punk Rock is their remix album.

peepee (peepee), Monday, 15 August 2005 14:24 (twenty years ago)

Melvins all the way. Though Mekons get some credit for "Where Were You" and the Boredoms "cover" it inspired (which might be my favorite of all the Super Roots).

- (smile), Monday, 15 August 2005 14:28 (twenty years ago)

I still have not been offered any opinions or information that would lead me to wanna hear the Melvins.

peepee (peepee), Monday, 15 August 2005 14:45 (twenty years ago)

What's this about a Melvins remix by Eye from the Boredoms?

tim reynolds = melvins fan!!
Oh SNAP! Bill Maher? disses the Melvins on Celebrity Jeopardy

I'm Hi, Jared Fogle (ex machina), Monday, 15 August 2005 20:00 (twenty years ago)

two years pass...

when was the melvins' heyday, cuz i missed it. the name is familiar, but i don't think i ever heard 'em. i used to really like the mekons, they are a fun band, but they definitely have some crits who overpraise them.

gershy, Saturday, 19 January 2008 05:55 (eighteen years ago)

91-92

sexyDancer, Saturday, 19 January 2008 06:11 (eighteen years ago)

When 'Bullhead' came out, that was the thing that made my hairs stand up. Still their best album to this day. then, I remember the 'Eggnog' ep coming out, and we were all blown away by the epic 10 minute track on there ... like, wow, who would have thought the Melvins ( you know, the Melvins of the 45 second tracks from Deep Six) would actually jam out on a 10 minute track?! THEN, they dropped 'Lysol' on us, and we were like woah, never heard anything like this before

and I remember mid-90s when people starting chattering about Earth and I was like dude, whatever, they are just copying what the Melvins fucking PIONEERED on the "Charmicarmicat"/Lysol journey...

They were the fucking kings.

I never got into the Cobain album or whatever. It was all a letdown after the epic of 'Lysol'. I liked 'Prick' a lot when it came out though, even though everybody thought it was lame and a joke..

Stormy Davis, Saturday, 19 January 2008 06:30 (eighteen years ago)

lysol is so epic and heavy

latebloomer, Saturday, 19 January 2008 06:32 (eighteen years ago)

Mekons, obviously.

deedeedeextrovert, Saturday, 19 January 2008 07:18 (eighteen years ago)

I like them both, but at the end of the day, they're both capable of being soul-immolatingly dull.

Alex in NYC, Saturday, 19 January 2008 13:07 (eighteen years ago)

The Mekons made good albums through, oh, 1987 or so.

Therefore, they win.

xhuxk, Saturday, 19 January 2008 15:58 (eighteen years ago)

The most recent Melvins album is great. I have never heard a Mekons album, but the stories I've read about them and the people who praise them loudly and at length have me pretty well convinced I'd hate them.

unperson, Saturday, 19 January 2008 16:41 (eighteen years ago)

My Melvins thoughts (and other people's) here:

Mekons last 3 studio albums = among their best.

Mekons Mekons Mekons.

Usual Channels, Saturday, 19 January 2008 23:26 (eighteen years ago)

Whoops--last 3 studio albums of NEW MATERIAL. Important distinction.

Usual Channels, Saturday, 19 January 2008 23:27 (eighteen years ago)

You go, girl!

Melvins!

MEKONGS

Noodle Vague, Sunday, 20 January 2008 13:11 (eighteen years ago)

I um ... wouldn't compare the two? If the concept is bands stocked next to one another in the record stores then I would have shot for something a passably relevant ... Meat Puppets vs Mekons ... Melvins vs ... I dunno, Metallica or something.

Am I way off here?

RabiesAngentleman, Sunday, 20 January 2008 14:04 (eighteen years ago)

I'd have to go with the Melvins, if only because I've never heard the Mekons. But I did see Jon Langford's interview thing for T&G25 a few months ago, and he seems like a thoroughly nice bloke. In fact, he sounds a lot like my uncle who lives in Nottingham.

MacDara, Sunday, 20 January 2008 14:23 (eighteen years ago)

I like the mekons too but I'd still take Melvins ,or as mentioned, meat puppets, over them.

Herman G. Neuname, Sunday, 20 January 2008 16:59 (eighteen years ago)

the mekons lineup with sally timms and susie honeyman was hella sexy
