Just so you know...

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 15 August 2005 08:13 (twenty years ago)

Oh what fascinating revelations will be unearthed for the first time??

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Monday, 15 August 2005 09:20 (twenty years ago)

It's BBC4. They don't 'unearth' new things, just old stuff...

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 15 August 2005 09:21 (twenty years ago)

just like the bands they'll be wasting hours talking about.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Monday, 15 August 2005 09:33 (twenty years ago)

I don't quite see what Jonathan Meades and Rachid Taha had to do with Britpop.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 15 August 2005 09:34 (twenty years ago)

haha stevem, spending hours talking about britpop is a 'waste' now?

N_RQ, Monday, 15 August 2005 09:37 (twenty years ago)

it's okay when WE do it on a public interweb msg board. But this is PUBLICLY FUNDED TELEVISION for Cliff's sake!

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Monday, 15 August 2005 09:40 (twenty years ago)

oi, lurkers, cough up!

N_RQ, Monday, 15 August 2005 09:43 (twenty years ago)

live forever is crap but the pulp docu was on channel 4 in 95 and roxx. the only new programme showing on tuesday is the half hour john harris thing.

his article in the guardian on friday on the whole 10 years on caper is here:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/arts/fridayreview/story/0,12102,1546968,00.html

piscesboy, Monday, 15 August 2005 09:49 (twenty years ago)

I would watch it, if I could, but I cannot.

I thought Harris's claims in the article, which I read over a chicken & mushroom pie yesterday, were mostly relatively correct, by the standard of a lot of pop journalism. It made me reflect that while one naturally wants to knock him, Harris is actually more reliable than most.

the bellefox, Monday, 15 August 2005 11:10 (twenty years ago)

I suppose it makes a change from Harris's usual claims, which I understand he makes at his local DSS every fortnight.

I like that picture of the fox!

the rainfox, Monday, 15 August 2005 11:32 (twenty years ago)

why can't they paint the other side of the story ? what about people who hated britpop - they should have got jaz coleman to rant away.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Monday, 15 August 2005 11:35 (twenty years ago)

Coxon and Frischmann are actually quite negative about it all now. But yes, views from people who were clear objecters at the time might be nice.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Monday, 15 August 2005 11:39 (twenty years ago)

why can't they paint the other side of the story ? what about people who hated Modern Jazz - they should have got Acker Bilk to rant away.

The Jive Session (elwisty), Monday, 15 August 2005 12:37 (twenty years ago)

If I were a fox, I would be completely in love with Basil Brush and his zany antics.

Aleeshie (Aleeshie), Monday, 15 August 2005 15:30 (twenty years ago)

Tonite. So, set our videos. And forget to watch the tape.

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 13:51 (twenty years ago)

What the fuck, man. This is a valid comparison how?

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 13:54 (twenty years ago)

ach, there's some people who want to rant away against britpop ON TELEVISION!!!

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 13:56 (twenty years ago)

i think it makes sense. either you have a prog about *british music in the mid-nineties*, in which case of course you should give lots of space to all sides, or you have whatthis is, a programme on britpop. why oh why are mojo special issues on the beatles so laudatory!?

N_RQ, Tuesday, 16 August 2005 14:01 (twenty years ago)

What was really going on elsewhere in Britain in the mid 90s: Techno Animal, Scorn, Bark Psychosis, O'rang, Omni Trio, Spring Heel Jack, Tricky, Aphex Twin, Laika, The Aloof, Sabres of Paradise, Flying Saucer Attack, Underworld, Leftfield, Orbital, A Guy Called Gerald, Loop Guru, Spooky, Slam, Disco Inferno, Seefeel, Goldie etc

I hated Britpop [in particular Oasis] in the mid 90s and it was the MM support of Oasis that ultimately led to Melody Maker's death IMHO.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 14:33 (twenty years ago)

It doesn't make sense because britpop was acker bilk.

yes, and? this is a programme about britpop. admittedly, bbc4 would not commission a prog on mid-90s idm/dnb/trip hop, but that doesn't make the britpop programme in itself an invalid exercise. yeah it was acker bilk, but people liked it and people will watch tv programmes about it.

N_RQ, Tuesday, 16 August 2005 14:43 (twenty years ago)

nOT ME! i'LL JUST...ER....mOAN aBOU_T IT ON TEH INT@RW3B!!!1

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 14:46 (twenty years ago)

BBC 4 should show the docufilm Modulations sometime, plus the entire series of the eternally fabulous 'Dancing In The Streets; A History of Rock n' Roll'. I don't think either of these are out on DVD though I could be wrong (esp. about the former).

The problems with this Britpop stuff tonight is that what possible useful conclusions can they reach from doing it? Considering we're talking about something that happened merely TEN years ago? The scope of this nostalgia really is too narrow, and what will presumably be 90% celebration leading to the final 10% of the programme at the end constituting regret will cancel this out or could just leave one feeling very flat about the whole thing. I very much doubt anything they come up with can be as good as the big Britpop thread on ILM that was recently revived in which a far more fascinating picture was painted of the time prior to the arrival of Oasis in 1994.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 15:12 (twenty years ago)

Did anybody see this? My freeview box had no channels on it, yesterday.

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 15:33 (twenty years ago)

that BRITPOP NOW thing was even worse than i recall from ten years back. god 'powder' were the worst band ever signed i would say. they were the sort of band you see in a pub with three other disinterested people on a wet thursday in preston then never hear of again.
menswear in tighter/better than you remember shocker.
i love the fact that the britpop stories told from whatever angle, always start with suede. love it love it love it. it must p-ss damon off no end!

actually what WAS the reason that damon albarn alludes to/ gets angry about in that interview for the big falling out with oasis (who as history often forgets actually got on okay for about 6 months)?
i sort of heard it was about l!$a m00rish!!

yeah stevem the much-loved DANCING IN THE STREET is only available on vhs. in fact Affectian/ Niche_Ian of this very parish currently has my copy of the last 3 episodes. it's *ridiculous* that it's not available on dvd. is there someone we can petition?

piscesboy, Wednesday, 17 August 2005 15:45 (twenty years ago)

i wonder if it's turned up on yookaynovah yet

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 16:11 (twenty years ago)

it'll get repeated on bbc2 no doubt.

i don't even know who lisa moorish is, but damon and liam both shagged her, hence beef.

Enrique, naked in an unfamiliar future where corporations run the world... (Enri, Wednesday, 17 August 2005 17:58 (twenty years ago)

And then Pete Doherty; it's like she's the connection between generations…

carson dial (carson dial), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 18:35 (twenty years ago)

Funny, I thought that watching the program ten years ago, but last night I thought they were the best on it!

KeefW (kmw), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 18:53 (twenty years ago)

i watched the pulp thing (funny: i remembered they were good live, not weedy as fuck with no bass and the world's shittest organ noise) and ten minutes of the harris thing, but soon all the hatred and loathing and bile came flooding back and i had to turn it off. good christ, britpop was shit. except pulp. the best music in the entire programme was the ten-second clip of slowdive at the very beginning (with that tit harris wanking on about how "depressing" they were. the tool).

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 19:26 (twenty years ago)

I ended catching most of the Harris thing and it really was horrendous. When the most exciting revelation from the programme is that Louise Wener is up the duff, you're really scraping the barrel. I wanted to see McGee squirm re his best mate Blair's slide from grace and the shift to stadium bed-wetting and how it was ALL HIS FAULT, but no such luck.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 21:57 (twenty years ago)

When I saw Pulp live, just as their popularity was kicking in,they sounded like fucking HAWKWIND! at one point Jarvis stoppped dead in a pose for about ten minutes and the rest of them went into a heavy motorik drone out w/Russel Senior freaking out on his violin. No-one ever looks like they believe me when I tell them this....

Raw Patrick (Raw Patrick), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 22:11 (twenty years ago)

i do, raw patrick. i do.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 22:16 (twenty years ago)

Cool!
