'The Call (Neptunes Remix)'

who's that one by?

piscesboy, Monday, 15 August 2005 13:30 (twenty years ago)

Backstreets

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 15 August 2005 13:30 (twenty years ago)

Ned would I be correct in guessing that you like The Neptunes at their most disco?

"Caught Out There" is no. 2 for me BTW.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 15 August 2005 13:31 (twenty years ago)

Ned would I be correct in guessing that you like The Neptunes at their most disco?

Good call, sir.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 15 August 2005 13:33 (twenty years ago)

"bouncing back" or "grimey" or "consider this"

beatles fan, Monday, 15 August 2005 13:34 (twenty years ago)

backstreets? never heard of them. unless it was backstreet boys renamed?
still, this is what the thread was for!

piscesboy, Monday, 15 August 2005 13:37 (twenty years ago)

Oy.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 15 August 2005 13:37 (twenty years ago)

has/will anyone pick an N*E*R*D track, i wonder.

N_RQ, Monday, 15 August 2005 13:38 (twenty years ago)

'Things Are Getting Better' was actually my first outside pick instead of Justin.

BARMS, Monday, 15 August 2005 13:40 (twenty years ago)

i was going to pick "am i high" (the original version) but remembered nore

beatles fan, Monday, 15 August 2005 13:40 (twenty years ago)

I don't think ther'd be a N.E.R.D. track in my top ten Neptunes tunes. "Stay Together" might get into my top twenty.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 15 August 2005 13:45 (twenty years ago)

"Cross the Border"

As far as NERD stuff my favorites are "Tape You," "Things are Getting Better" and "Lapdance" in roughly that order.

deej.., Monday, 15 August 2005 13:45 (twenty years ago)

Yes "Cross the Border"!!!!

I know this is not a POX thread but I reckon my POX would be:

The Call
Caught Out There
Got Yr Money
Cross The Border
Bouncin' Back
Southern Hospitality
Danger (Been So Long)
Nigga Please
Ego
Roller Rink

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 15 August 2005 13:48 (twenty years ago)

neptunes reached their peak with the 4 beats on the god's favorite album ("grimey", "consider this", "nothin" & something else i can't remember..) and the BIGGEST drums i think have ever been heard in rap music... notice how with their decline their drums have grown much SMALLER (something they seem to have remedied recently with that fabo tune and the gwen stefani single)

beatles fan, Monday, 15 August 2005 13:51 (twenty years ago)

"I'm Not You" is great, because I like when the Neptunes are mercenary. A few kettle drums, scratchy little synths, I live from my kids and theirs and their young'ns after that.

xp I think some of their 'small' drum-beats are really good (drop it like its hot remix, for instance) and work counterintuitively; you expect BIG grindin drums from the neptunes so when they use almost 'negative' drum space it becomes an event.
At least, ideally. Plenty of crappy songs on this formula too (cough talib kweli cough)

deej.., Monday, 15 August 2005 13:53 (twenty years ago)

Please don't make choose between 'Nothin'' and 'Southern Hospitality'.

Flyboy (Flyboy), Monday, 15 August 2005 13:55 (twenty years ago)

Re BIG DRUMS "Cross The Border" is great for this too - the way that the drums will cut out for a bit leaving just the guitar, and then you get this STOMP STOMP STOMP and the beat is BACK.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 15 August 2005 13:55 (twenty years ago)

yeah but big drum neptunes still managed to sound minimal, i think it's the way they managed to space all the sounds out, so they could have big crunchy kick drums without distorting the bass. plus they were great at pairing pretty/fragile/quirky melodies with big fuck off drums without oppressing the melody like on "ma i don't love her" (their most nerd sounding rap beat)

xp

beatles fan, Monday, 15 August 2005 14:07 (twenty years ago)

i mean, most of their pre "grindin" beats were just drums and keyboards, where the rhythm forms as much of the hook as the melody. they weren't exactly bass line rap innit?

beatles fan, Monday, 15 August 2005 14:10 (twenty years ago)

I think the small drum sound is a very limited/limiting trick but it works when everyone from scott storch to scott storch is using 808s on every major rap hit. Its more unexpected than it would be if they continued the HERES ANOTHER NEPTUNES TRACK W QUIRKY MELODY AND BIG DRUMS. its painting them into a corner, but on occasion it works.

deej.., Monday, 15 August 2005 14:37 (twenty years ago)

fair enough, i was just saying i prefer big drum neptunes beats. and i haven't got anything against small drums, dj paul & juicy j are my favourite beatmakers! scott "tuff jew" storch can go fuck himself tho (except for "cali boyz"!!).

beatles fan, Monday, 15 August 2005 14:43 (twenty years ago)

agreed! on all counts.

deej.., Monday, 15 August 2005 15:12 (twenty years ago)

compared to everyone else, neptunes have 'big drums' but compared to
rick rubin or mantronix, their drums are nowhere near as aggressive or rough

Their remix of Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger.

"Nothin'" (but I share Flyboy's agony).

Frank Kogan (Frank Kogan), Monday, 15 August 2005 17:46 (twenty years ago)

Also "Nothin." I can (and have) listened to that on repeat forever.

Candicissima (candicissima), Monday, 15 August 2005 17:49 (twenty years ago)

I'm mystified by alllll the love for "Slave 4 U," not even britney's best, never mind the neptunes.

deej.., Monday, 15 August 2005 17:56 (twenty years ago)

everyone saying "nothin" need to check out "grimey" and "consider this" (especially the latter, ok so it's clunky piano hook + square bass + horn honk kick is passe but still, the timid desperado guitar flits that end each chorus kill me everytime) for much nore goodness.

beatles fan, Monday, 15 August 2005 18:00 (twenty years ago)

I'm mystified by alllll the love for "Slave 4 U," not even britney's best, never mind the neptunes

It has a good beat and you can dance to it. (And I do also think it's Britney's best by a long shot, aside from "Lucky" perhaps.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 15 August 2005 18:03 (twenty years ago)

Toxic, Baby One more Time, Drive me Crazy, Breathe on me - these are the only britney songs i can think of right now for some reason but i'd take them over "slave for U" (note: i may be contradicting something I've said previously on ILM, and I dont care)

deej.., Monday, 15 August 2005 18:07 (twenty years ago)

i always think "slave 4 u" sounds like when you download a really low bitrate mp3, submerged under dirty dishwater

beatles fan, Monday, 15 August 2005 18:07 (twenty years ago)

But especially at the time it was a really *safe* neptunes sound, not particularly weird or quirky or interesting considering what else they had been doing then!

deej.., Monday, 15 August 2005 18:08 (twenty years ago)

I mean, I do like it, I just don't see it as a neptunes highlight.

deej.., Monday, 15 August 2005 18:08 (twenty years ago)

"Slave 4 U" knocks the shit out of every other Britney single. It's flat-out amazing and really the type of thing she should have been doing from day one.

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Monday, 15 August 2005 18:10 (twenty years ago)

(But right now at this moment my pick would be Usher's "U Don't Have To Call")

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Monday, 15 August 2005 18:10 (twenty years ago)

Can you expound a bit on that Dan? Not being snarky, just interested in seeing what void you think that song filled that her others I listed don't.

deej.., Monday, 15 August 2005 18:11 (twenty years ago)

xp obv.

deej.., Monday, 15 August 2005 18:11 (twenty years ago)

i think alot of people consider it a highlight because it was the two big pop artists of the time recording together, before neptunes made it ok for big name rap producers to work with pop stars. so i guess in the history of pop music it's supposed to be "important". i just think it sounds dated compared to their other beats from the time (remember when neptunes had like 30 songs in the charts in the same week!!), britney's voice is aight but it hasn't got much melody, it's just weird noises to an rnb beat.

beatles fan, Monday, 15 August 2005 18:13 (twenty years ago)

"Toxic" tries way too fucking hard. It's a gigantic pandering mess of "LOOK AT ME, I'M PRECIOUS" cliches strung together in an irritating, semidanceable manner. I can't imagine dancing to this song and not feeling like a gigantic asshole.

"Baby One More Time" is a great song. It's not nearly as sleazy as "Slave 4 U", though, and you can't abandon yourself in the beat, plus it doesn't have an interesting bridge.

"Drive Me Crazy" is fucking embarrasing. I can't quantify exactly what it is about that song that irks me so much because I have conditionend myself to either turn off the radio or flee the room whenever it plays.

I have never heard "Breathe On Me".

it hasn't got much melody, it's just weird noises to an rnb beat.

THIS IS EXACTLY WHY IT'S AWESOME.

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Monday, 15 August 2005 18:18 (twenty years ago)

I pick this one.

NEPTUNES MAKE SOME MONEY SHOCKER

Gigwise report that rapper Nas has paid the Neptunes $2m for a track, and apparently had to beat other hip-hoppers to it. Busta Rhymes is alleged to have said "Ah shit, that's the craziest beat I ever heard! Those drums man, those drums are fire! If Nas is gonna rap to this beat, it's going to be over. This will be the biggest hit in the history of hip hop."

david day (winslow), Monday, 15 August 2005 18:27 (twenty years ago)

"Grindin' and Superthug" - tie.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Monday, 15 August 2005 18:42 (twenty years ago)

it hasn't got much melody, it's just weird noises to an rnb beat.

THIS IS EXACTLY WHY IT'S AWESOME.

Well really thats what all good neptunes beats are. If anything, the noises aren't weird at all because it was like standard neptunes noise circa 2001-2002.

deej.., Monday, 15 August 2005 18:42 (twenty years ago)

""Slave 4 U" knocks the shit out of every other Britney single. It's flat-out amazing and really the type of thing she should have been doing from day one."

like fuck it is. mediocre neptunes song, shitty performnnce from britney, corny as fuck sex cliches, terrible video... baby one more time>>>>>>>>>>>>slave 4 u by a hundred miles.

ok, Monday, 15 August 2005 19:40 (twenty years ago)

Why do I have a feeling that once again the concept that Dan and I might hear things differently from conventional wisdom's point of view doesn't compute with other people, to the point where they must deny our stated preferences or their crystal palaces will shatter? (And besides, The Lex agrees with us on "Slave"'s greatness if not necessarily that it's Brit's best.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 15 August 2005 19:51 (twenty years ago)

"OMG I WOULD RATHER PERV OVER ADULT WOMEN THAN SCHOOLGIRLS, WHAT'S WRONG WITH MEEEEEEEEEEEEEE?"

its not too late, there are people you can see. you dont have to be burnt on a stake by your local townspeople. dont tell anyone about this though, just seek help and all will be fine.

ok, Monday, 15 August 2005 20:02 (twenty years ago)

As soon as I saw the topic I thought 'nothin' so I'm gonna stick with that. Second would be 'bossman'. They should do some more work with dancehall people.

I like beautiful apart from pharell's singing.

Bn1 (Bn1), Monday, 15 August 2005 21:30 (twenty years ago)

(And besides, The Lex agrees with us on "Slave"'s greatness if not necessarily that it's Brit's best.)

I never considered that I might be implying that 'Slave' was my favourite Britney song, far too logical for me. Thinking about it now there aren't many which beat it though - maybe 'Anticipating', which would probably beat every Neptunes production ever too.

The way Britney's strange frog voice works with the Neps' strange space pulses is probably unrivalled by any other vocalist they've worked with, possibly excluding Kelis.

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 15 August 2005 21:37 (twenty years ago)

Argh I forgot "Girls Dem Sugar"!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 15 August 2005 22:32 (twenty years ago)

And "Hot In Herre"!!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 15 August 2005 22:32 (twenty years ago)

"Flashback", "Caught Out There" and "Drop It Like It's Hot" are also contenders.

Yes "Girls Dem Sugar"!

I love "Shake Ya Ass" too! Seriously I could happily do a "Neptunes Pick Only 50" list and be utterly enthusiastic the whole way.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 08:41 (twenty years ago)

I've wanted to mention a whole bunch of others I love but am trying to adhere to this 'mention only one' thing. You're not making it any easier!

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 09:10 (twenty years ago)

why do you guys hate NERD? the 1st NERD album were great? do you not like your urrrrrrrrrbannnnn producers moving into other areas and moving into them very well?

okoko, Tuesday, 16 August 2005 09:44 (twenty years ago)

'Consider This' is the one with Kelis singing "His name is N-O-R-E", right? I think 'Grimey' might have the best (these days read: least annoying) Pharrell hook ever, plus killer drums, but there's just something about that 'Nothin'' winding sound...

okoko, "pick only one" means that when people don't pick something, it doesn't mean they hate it, see?

Most genius beats on that album: "Sunday After You" and "Vexed And Glorious".

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 14:55 (twenty years ago)

wow, my mp3 player just selected "Sunday After You" on random mode!

I remember reading an article about him back when it came out which claimed it had taken him years to get it released and he had 2 more albums ready to go. Will anyone ever release them?
