Their early work was a little too new wave for my tastes, but when Sports came out in '83,I think they really came into their own, commercial and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost. He's been compared to Elvis Costello, but I think Huey has a far much more bitter, cynical sense of humour.

No song evokes a specific time, place, and feeling for me like "Power of Love." Period.

If gays can take back "faggot," and blacks can take back "nigger," then surely developmentally disabled folks can take back "retarded." And since they can't do it for themselves, I'm going to do it for them.

uh...wow.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Monday, 15 August 2005 20:15 (twenty years ago)

but some of her best friends are black! and retarded! and gay!

she is def. not the Weekly's best writer - usually she's relegatd to a short "bouncer's column" in the back...

Don't need no credit card to ride this train!

That doesn't really have anything to do with the story, it's just a Huey Lewis line I always thought was funny.

Hurting (Hurting), Monday, 15 August 2005 23:51 (twenty years ago)

??!
I thought this was a great article. I never have understood the weird hyper-political correctness on ilx. And I say that as someone who thinks that so-called political correctness is a good thing, generally speaking.

Plus the author in question is pretty much the only redeeming part of the Weekly, in my opinion.

Dell (Dell), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 00:15 (twenty years ago)

"I thought this was a great article. I never have understood the weird hyper-political correctness on ilx."

You're on crack, you pinkie-faggot-negro-kike.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 00:31 (twenty years ago)

Totally agree, Dell. This was brilliant, particularly the nigger/faggot/retarded part (though she kinda hedged by not going "retard").

It's kind of insane to me that people would let their hyper-sensitivity distort their opinion into calling this poorly written. It's anything but. The voice is simultaneously batshit and clear. A real volatile vibe. Pretty spectacular, I think.

Rich (Rich), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 00:33 (twenty years ago)

hey all you haters out there! yo, did you even read the story or just that one quote? read the whole thing then hate me, fine. but just read that quote?...what a buncha retards.

jesus the story was about how retarded people get overlooked and have a lot to offer. if you get caught up in how i call them Retarded you ain't getting the point.

i'm a break my foot off in your ear, you punch drunk fagolas.

katy st. clair, ie, the Worst/Best thing in the Weekly

Katy St. Clair, Tuesday, 16 August 2005 00:51 (twenty years ago)

See, I enjoyed getting caught up in them being called retarded repeatedly.

Rich (Rich), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 00:56 (twenty years ago)

is this article is some sort of cosmic backlash generated by my autism thread?

ok mabye its not that bad, but i'm still reeling over...

"It was just like people who yell "Bruuuce!" at a Springsteen concert, only more retarded. In fact, Huey Lewis is a retarded version of Bruce Springsteen. Think about it. All of his songs are three-chord chug-a-lugs about working-class schlubs trying to make it through this crazy thing we call life. "Workin' for a Livin'," "Walking on a Thin Line," and "I Want a New Drug" are all slightly less soulful embodiments of the Springsteen ethos. (Communists will note that Huey himself is actually not middle class, but grew up privileged in Marin. He attended private schools and even went to college at Cornell.)".

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 01:35 (twenty years ago)

I don't get you guys either, I enjoyed the article.

ps wtf is a fagola, we don't say that in the south. thanks.

Jamey Lewis (Jameys Burning), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 02:33 (twenty years ago)

hmmm, weird. i really enjoyed the article, too. it's pretty weird how far people are going to read around the author's intentions.

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 02:50 (twenty years ago)

Huey Lewis is a smart dude. I was once doing a phoner with him and casually mentioned that I had written a semi-critical review of an Eagles concert in that day's newspaper. He asked me if I'd heard from Don Henley yet. I said, "Huh?" Lewis insisted that I would be hearing from Henley about that review. Sure enough, I hang up with Lewis, and an e-mail from Henley pops into my inbox a couple of hours later. It was almost spooky. Initially, I thought it might be Huey pulling a fast one on me. But it was Henley.

Mr Deeds (Mr Deeds), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 03:05 (twenty years ago)

so what did henley say?

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 03:07 (twenty years ago)

also was that story meant to substantiate huey's smartness? because he might have just heard that don henley contacts reviewers, it's not exactly sherlock holmesian detective skills he was displaying if that was the case.

but maybe he is smart anyway.

The End
