Mixtapes: How the fuck do I know which ones to buy?

I bought a handful of mixtapes today.

Papoose/DJ Kayslay - A Bootlegger's Nightmare
Tapemasters Inc.: The Inc. Files Pt.5
DJ Envy - Hitlist 11
Tapemasters Inc., On Air Collection Part 4

I was really picking stuff at random and on suggestion from friends.

I'm really convinced that a lot of indie-rock sites that review mixtapes are talking out of their ass a lot of time, so i don't know who to trust...

Who is the arbiter of good taste as far as mixtaping is concerned? I can't email Caramanica every day, y'know!

You takes your chances!

For 7-8 bucks, you can't really go wrong, can you?

artist-made tapes or best-ofs that focus on one artist are usually the best way to go, but really there's nothing wrong with just getting mixes that have one or two songs you want, because odds are there'll be a few more you end up liking that you might not've heard elsewhere.

Really deej? I bought the Papoose FROM Papoose on the sidewalk and I was distinctly underwhelmed.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 21:08 (twenty years ago)

Papoose is okay. His style becomes boring after a couple of songs, though.

Get the Black Rob "return of.." mixtape with Kay Slay. Best mixtape of the last year.

Plus the newest Kay Slay ones : "nyc drama 3" and "nyc drama 4". Any Kay Slay, basically.

Any J. Love mixes are good too : the "str8 bangerz" and "king of what i do" series have most of the new track doing the rounds and he does artist based mixtapes for Ghostface, Jay Z, Rakim, Nas, Slick Rick, Mobb Deep, Noreaga etc featuring lots of rare and unreleased tracks.

Ellis, Wednesday, 17 August 2005 15:50 (twenty years ago)

His Ghostface mixtapes are basically must-owns if you're a ghostface fan. There are two of them, "Hidden Darts I" and "II"

Man there are a lot of mixtapes out there.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 16:37 (twenty years ago)

And a lot less less cassette players.

if there is not any particular individual rapper you are interested in listening to a whole mixtape of, blend mixes are usually the best stand alone cds that you can just put on and leave on.i recommend anything by dj jelly& mc assault (& dj unk & dj montay) (southern style djs)(make sure you get the ones with long tracklists), and dj scorpio. the only the crunk survive series by dj scream has a good selection and the dirty rnb series by dj smallz is good, not blended tho.

what's the best place online to buy mixtapes - mixtapekings? I can get most of the Dirty South/Houston tapes fairly easily down here, but nothing from New York or the West Coast, and most places are charging full CD prices ($12+).
