1st thoughts:
they seem much more confident, no doubt cos of how well theyve done so far
much more tongue in cheek, theyre funnier now
theyre like proper stars
the song is more commercial than previously, a bit blanded out 80s-wise somehow, not sure how to explain it
but its a great pop tune
i look forward to getting bored of it in months to come
glad it doesnt sound like all their other songs, i.e the same song theyve repeated about ten times over already

okokok, Tuesday, 16 August 2005 21:25 (twenty years ago)

Franz Ferdinand seem to have become remarkably comfortable with being popstars. I rather like it, and have been mumbling the song to myself ever since.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 21:42 (twenty years ago)

i'm more interested in the video! is it by Jonas Odell again?

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 21:43 (twenty years ago)

(i've not seen it, i should add)

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 21:43 (twenty years ago)

they are GREAT pop stars, brilliant ones, even
i like this new attitude of theirs
reminds me of pulp in places
the tune has a few parts that are jarvis-like too, only a few small ones though
best new indie/rock single ive heard in quite a while, thank god this will save me from fucking kaisers, bravery and their ilk
thank fuck

okokoko, Tuesday, 16 August 2005 21:51 (twenty years ago)

can anyone ysi an mp3 of the new tune?

Johann (johann), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 21:52 (twenty years ago)

will ysi it in a mo.

the line 'well here we are at the transmission party, i love your friends they're all so arty' is the best glasgow specific line ever.

stirmonster (stirmonster), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 21:58 (twenty years ago)

the lyrics to this are fab!
anyone who doesnt think so is a fucking crab-ass hater

okko, Tuesday, 16 August 2005 22:01 (twenty years ago)

I'm sure the haters are circling.

I'm very excited to hear this!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 22:01 (twenty years ago)

The Franz are specktackulally good at the things their flollowerers flail at. The next album, especially the firat single, mightn't be the noir-fest that's been anticipated, but they're sprinting in the right direction. Pop-shots in full effect.

Shockah Shockah Hey!!! (noodle vague), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 22:08 (twenty years ago)

i have to confess to not being their biggest fan previously but i think this is really great -

This is great!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 22:16 (twenty years ago)

Super catchy! It slays the competition. Go Franz!

Stew (stew s), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 22:24 (twenty years ago)

I'm sure the haters are circling.

here i am.

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 22:59 (twenty years ago)

actually i don't hate it, i like them well enough. i just find the song annoying.

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 23:01 (twenty years ago)

They couldn't be a creepier gang of paedophiles if they all had the face of Moby.

Googley Asearch (Toaster), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 23:05 (twenty years ago)

I like this more than I did the live version from a few weeks ago. Still, I wasn't really warmed up by the opening, and the chorus seemed forced.

WillS, Wednesday, 17 August 2005 00:28 (twenty years ago)

think it's bad

i'm realer than all out FRANZ MANIA - (C) NME - will be in approximately 5.4 weeks.

okoko, Wednesday, 17 August 2005 08:44 (twenty years ago)

what this vid shows us is that the best way to follow up a hit album and half a dozen hit singles is to:

not come back all po-faced
come back with a smile and lots of energy
come back with something catchy and not sullen just to prove you dont like fame
but show you LIKE and can poke fun and enjoy being famous!

okoko, Wednesday, 17 August 2005 08:47 (twenty years ago)

half a dozen hit singles

what is this, crackpipevania?

N_RQ, Wednesday, 17 August 2005 08:48 (twenty years ago)

ok, i will confess, hearing it isolated from the video, just as audio, it isnt quite as fun, although now the vid is permanently tattoed in my brain so i keep seeing their funny faces while listening to this. the vid reminds me of some early 80s vids of bands traipsing around new york art galleries or something. its not quite as good without the vid, something about that 'dooo doo doo' guitar line/background vocal is kinda annoying, i cant quite put my finger on what it is just yet. but its really catchy at the same time.

okokok, Wednesday, 17 August 2005 08:54 (twenty years ago)

I haven't seen the video, but the song doesn't do a great deal for me - it sounds like filler from the first album.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 09:01 (twenty years ago)

half a dozen hit singles

Or "three", as it's sometimes known.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 09:01 (twenty years ago)

google says 'michael' got to no. 17, which is abut 700 sales, i believe. watch out pop music! skinny white guys comin atcha!

N_RQ, Wednesday, 17 August 2005 09:11 (twenty years ago)

If anyone could gmail me this I'd really appreciate it. weekendsteve at gmail.

Love it even though am reminded slightly of plup.

weekendsteve, Wednesday, 17 August 2005 10:04 (twenty years ago)

Hate the first 15 seconds, after that it's surprisingly good!

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 10:56 (twenty years ago)

Hate the first 15 seconds, after that it's surprisingly good!

The negative of "Take Me Out", then.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 10:59 (twenty years ago)

I think it's brilliant. I totally love the big guitar hook. I reckon it sounds like roxy at their (pop) best. the structure is very influenced by them. the video is brilliant. the fact that it does look like it takes place at a transmission opening is beautiful. the whole thing cracks me up.

simon 803 (simon 803), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 11:11 (twenty years ago)

there is no point in hating on the franz.
hating this song is futile.

okokok, Wednesday, 17 August 2005 11:37 (twenty years ago)

This wouldn't sound at all out of place on Bowie's Scary Monsters album. Indeed, at the break I nearly expected them to sing, "We are the goon squad, and we're coming to town, beep-beep."

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 12:06 (twenty years ago)

is there anywhere to see the vid online?

Johann (johann), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 12:23 (twenty years ago)

Hate the first 15 seconds, after that it's surprisingly good!

I had the same reaction. My first thought was "meh" and then it was "heyyyy..."

Me like it. :D

Roz (Roz), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 12:32 (twenty years ago)

Rockin'!

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 16:51 (twenty years ago)

And way Way WAAAAYYYYYYYYYYY better than anything on Room on Fire!

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 16:54 (twenty years ago)

In a roundabout way this reminds me a lot of Madness.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 17:01 (twenty years ago)

And The Cars, too.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 17:02 (twenty years ago)

Cars was the first thing that came to my mind though I couldn't convince myself of it when I started trying to recall Cars songs.

gspm (gspm), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 18:24 (twenty years ago)

it sounds like younger younger 28s

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 18:35 (twenty years ago)

It's fucking rubbish.

Once I've heard it a million times over the next six months I'll probably have changed my mind, though.

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Thursday, 18 August 2005 01:47 (twenty years ago)

Wow, first time I've ever loved a song of theirs right off the bat. Way to go, the Franz! Cars/Madness/Younger Younger 28s=great! Now if they'd only write a song that actually sounds like Sparks, then I'd really flip.

Gogi Ormsby-Gore (Arthur), Thursday, 18 August 2005 01:56 (twenty years ago)

just found out this was filmed in new york
i was so right
best song of the year
wooo hoooo!

okokokok, Thursday, 18 August 2005 10:44 (twenty years ago)

it sounds like a cross between tears for fears' "we close our eyes" and elo's "don't bring me down"...ergo, it's fucking ace.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Thursday, 18 August 2005 10:47 (twenty years ago)

'We close our eyes' was by Go West, no?

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Thursday, 18 August 2005 10:52 (twenty years ago)

argh! yes. i are fule.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Thursday, 18 August 2005 11:01 (twenty years ago)

Haha, let's see how well this does against Bloc Party - who I love, but for catchy pop anthems, there's absolutely no contest. This is going to be a monster single.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Saturday, 20 August 2005 16:08 (twenty years ago)

This thread is turning into an ILM actually enjoys Franz Ferdinand shocka! I thought they were well loathed in these parts.

Of course, cue a vocal detractor in 3... 2... 1...

gspm (gspm), Saturday, 20 August 2005 19:56 (twenty years ago)

Man that lead singer needs a good slap.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 20 August 2005 19:57 (twenty years ago)

"Do You Want To?" is so clearly a white indie kid's idea of a sexy disco single. If I want to listen to an actual sexy disco single, I'll listen to the new Rachel Stevens single.

John Hunter, Saturday, 20 August 2005 20:35 (twenty years ago)

that's a joke, right?

jed_ (jed), Saturday, 20 August 2005 20:36 (twenty years ago)

i for one hear zero disco in "do you want to"

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Saturday, 20 August 2005 20:42 (twenty years ago)

Disco, dance, whatever. The whole rationale for Franz Ferdinand seems to be that they are some kind of indie/dance fusion, as exemplified by "Take Me Out." They are just not as good at pulling this trick off as, say, New Order.

John Hunter, Saturday, 20 August 2005 23:23 (twenty years ago)

!

jed_ (jed), Saturday, 20 August 2005 23:29 (twenty years ago)

blows

geoff (gcannon), Saturday, 20 August 2005 23:53 (twenty years ago)

"I knew your friend,
I blew him before ya"

jive session (elwisty), Sunday, 21 August 2005 00:18 (twenty years ago)

Sort of sounds like 35 years of British rock history put in a blender and liquified to "boring". I mean, there's obvious Bowie, a little XTC, a little Blur, a little Marine, and it adds up to nothing.

I.M. (I.M.), Sunday, 21 August 2005 01:09 (twenty years ago)

Absolutely fooking brilliant song! Don't like the very beginning bit, but loved it from then on. This is one of the catchiest songs I have ever listened to. "I know your friend, I blew him before you, oh yeah", what was he thinking?

WonderMike, Sunday, 21 August 2005 02:33 (twenty years ago)

"Do You Want To?" is so clearly a white indie kid's idea of a sexy disco single. If I want to listen to an actual sexy disco single, I'll listen to the new Rachel Stevens single."

Yeah, this song is clearly an indictment of those white indie kids...

twat.

PB, Sunday, 21 August 2005 02:58 (twenty years ago)

Surely you mean: "If I want to listen to a well put together pastiche of early 80s pop, I'll listen to the new Rachel Stevens single"?

(It was a bit unfortunate for Franz and me that they leaked on the same day, I agree.)

Tom (Groke), Sunday, 21 August 2005 10:40 (twenty years ago)

If only FF had ever done anything as good as Rachel's Some Girls, we could compare them. But it's not really the case, is it ?

snowballing (snowballing), Sunday, 21 August 2005 12:21 (twenty years ago)

Popist twats!

zeus, Sunday, 21 August 2005 12:35 (twenty years ago)

Surely you mean: "If I want to listen to a well put together pastiche of early 80s pop, I'll listen to the new Rachel Stevens single"?

Yes, I find that Rachel Stevens does a much better job of pastiching early 80s pop than does Alex Kapranos.

John Hunter, Sunday, 21 August 2005 16:20 (twenty years ago)

Yes, I find that Rachel Stevens does a much better job of pastiching early 80s pop than does Alex Kapranos.

...apart from the fact, that this song was written by Richard X, not Rachel.

zeus, Sunday, 21 August 2005 16:36 (twenty years ago)

I love them both, so there.

Roz (Roz), Sunday, 21 August 2005 16:53 (twenty years ago)

...apart from the fact, that this song was written by Richard X, not Rachel.

Oh no, she's a manufactured pop diva. I shall have to stop listening to her records immediately!

One might as well complain that Franz's songs were written by David Bowie, Gang of Four, and XTC.

John Hunter, Sunday, 21 August 2005 17:29 (twenty years ago)

Dear John.

Firstly I like Rachel, she's really nice, and like that song as well. But she didn't make any "early 80s pop pastiching", it was Richard X.

As for your second argument, is pure bullshit, and even you know that.

zeus, Sunday, 21 August 2005 18:33 (twenty years ago)

Why does it matter who wrote it?

Anyway, obviously I like the Rachel Stevens brand records more, I didn't start the comparison, it's invidious, let's not let it detract from the fact that the Franz Ferdinand brand has put its name to a fairly good pop single!

Tom (Groke), Sunday, 21 August 2005 20:23 (twenty years ago)

The video, downloaded from Livejournal or some such place.

angelo flores (flores), Monday, 22 August 2005 06:47 (twenty years ago)

Firstly I like Rachel, she's really nice, and like that song as well. But she didn't make any "early 80s pop pastiching", it was Richard X.

In the recent NME cover story on Franz, Alex K. says something to effect that the most exciting music right now is hip-hop, dance, and crunk, but "we could never hope to sound like that." I'm not sure why Franz feels they have to stay in the indie ghetto - why don't they hire Richard X and make a real dance record if that's the kind of music they really like?

I find it interesting that, although Franz is ostensibly the indie guitar band and Rachel Stevens the pop diva, Rachel's last two singles feature catchier guitar parts than any Franz record.

I don't hate Franz, I'll buy their record when it comes out - I just think that they should push themselves a little bit harder. From what I've heard of the new record, it sounds like it suffers from "Room on Fire" syndrome, i.e. "our first record was so great that we decided to record it again," starting with Take Me Out 2.0, I mean Do You Want To?

John Hunter, Monday, 22 August 2005 19:37 (twenty years ago)

I'm not sure why Franz feels they have to stay in the indie ghetto

because that's where their nice, safe sales are. i don't believe kapranos means all that "most exciting" stuff for one second - it's the same line every pasty indie guitar boy comes out with in a bid to sound more interesting.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Monday, 22 August 2005 19:51 (twenty years ago)

Franz are no more in a ghetto than rachel is, they are both making pop records. i don't think either of them are interesting but franz are a bit less shite if i had to choose.

jed_ (jed), Monday, 22 August 2005 19:57 (twenty years ago)

and since this record and the following album will go to number one (and rachel's single probably won't), what kind of ghetto is it?

jed_ (jed), Monday, 22 August 2005 20:00 (twenty years ago)

i must admit i've no idea whether rachel's records usually hit the top spot.

jed_ (jed), Monday, 22 August 2005 20:03 (twenty years ago)

this tune is totally 100x not as good as take me out
it soudns like you are describing that when you say "perfect pop" etc

ambrose (ambrose), Monday, 22 August 2005 20:18 (twenty years ago)

yeah i bet the new franz album will sound about as much influenced by lil jon as the new kanye west sounds influenced by franz (which is what he said). i.e. not much.

okokok, Monday, 22 August 2005 20:19 (twenty years ago)

I really need to hear this Rachel Stevens, whoever she is.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Monday, 22 August 2005 20:19 (twenty years ago)

In the recent NME cover story on Franz, Alex K. says something to effect that the most exciting music right now is hip-hop, dance, and crunk, but "we could never hope to sound like that." I'm not sure why Franz feels they have to stay in the indie ghetto - why don't they hire Richard X and make a real dance record if that's the kind of music they really like?

sometimes people like types of music that they don't feel the need or desire to play themselves.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Monday, 22 August 2005 20:20 (twenty years ago)

I don't think they need Richard X, when they can make their dance songs too, just themselves. Also, I don't feel that Do You Want To would debted so much to the 80s - it has a lot of sixties and seventies influences as well, and that's good.

I heard the whole record though, and I think they managed to create something else than the first one. There are some resemblances, of course, but why should they do something completely different?

zeus, Monday, 22 August 2005 20:23 (twenty years ago)

I've been in the thin red line between loving and hating this band, I really like some of their past songs while being annoyed by some things in their attitude, specially Alex Kapranos' quickly embracing the "we're a real band against manufactured pop" discourse and threating to turn into, say, Sting in two albums time. But, people, this track's amazing. I'm glad they have taken further some of the more sleazy qualities of tracks such as "This Fire" or "Michael" for this one.

At first I thought it was a "Don't Bring Me Down" homage, then I thought that the inspiration was probably "Let's Spend The Night Together" via Bowie -wich some drops of early Adam & The Ants, whose sound seems to permeate some other great '05 singles, doesn't it?

Can I try to conciliate both sides by saying: I wish Franz Ferdinand had been the backing band on Rachel's "I Said Never Again (But Here We Are)" as much as I would like a Richard X remix of "Do You Want To"? ;)

Diego Valladolid (dvalladt), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 17:09 (twenty years ago)

Several days later, this song is FUCKING UNSTOPPABLE. Hooray!

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 17:54 (twenty years ago)

(I still like "Take Me Out" more, though.)

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 17:54 (twenty years ago)

it's odd hearing it sans video. very hard to hate this song.

Enrique, naked in an unfamiliar future where corporations run the world... (Enri, Tuesday, 30 August 2005 21:39 (twenty years ago)

a week or more on, and this is still unfuckwithable! franz are still the best!

okoko, Tuesday, 30 August 2005 22:11 (twenty years ago)

still bad and all those bands in glasgow that sound like them and those other bands

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 23:06 (twenty years ago)

I'll grant that it's kind of catchy in an annoying way but still I'm mostly yech about it. "Take Me Out" was frickin mega.

Sundar (sundar), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 23:10 (twenty years ago)

i like it whenever i hear it ... but i have no particular desire to go and listen to it again. ach well, i don't think FF will be crying too many tears over me, somehow.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 07:16 (twenty years ago)

After reading this thread, downloading the song and subsequently seeing it on Rage I gotta say I wasn't blown away. Mind you I wasnt a big FF fan to begin with, and hey the song's ok, but its, well, them innit.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 07:51 (twenty years ago)

i didn't like them mainly because of the 'intellectual' image, but they seemed to have upped the fun with this one, so i'm glad it exists.

N_RQ, Wednesday, 31 August 2005 08:10 (twenty years ago)

This new song illustrates what FF has said all along - Duran Duran and the Fall are their biggest influences. Having been a huge Duran Duran fan for years, the similarity in styles in the basslines and drumbeats is unmistakeable. Other similarities include the overly silly and artsy lyrics and videos which Duran Duran pioneered in the early 80's. I'm happy that there is fun music like this which is tongue in cheek and not seriously dire - who said good rock music had to have lyrics focusing on social ills. Good rock provides an escape from all the crap in the world. Franz has put the artist back in the term musical artist.

sean joubert, Thursday, 1 September 2005 00:23 (twenty years ago)

Ever since I found out they share the same producer the Cardigans had I think of Lovefool when I hear a lot of their songs. It's funny because not many Cardigans songs sound like Lovefool but a lot of FF songs are similar.

Cunga (Cunga), Thursday, 1 September 2005 06:46 (twenty years ago)

Every time I hear this song, it's reminding me of "Don't bring me down" ELO!

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 1 September 2005 07:06 (twenty years ago)

OTM, Mark.

Hillary Brown (Hillary Brown), Thursday, 1 September 2005 12:52 (twenty years ago)

i heard Can't Stop Feeling last night (the track that was rumoured to be the next single) and it was bl00dy terrible.

piscesboy, Thursday, 1 September 2005 14:30 (twenty years ago)

one year passes...
This video is basically a crap version of the video for "Leave Right Now" by Will Young, amirite?

Sadly, he will be the next Alexis Petridish. (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 14:39 (nineteen years ago)

Yes but it's still a lot of fun.

I often think of the two videos as connected, as if perhaps it's all happening at the same party.

This also happens with Mariah Carey's "It's Like That" and The Killers' "Mr Brightside".
