Many good shows at Cat's Cradle in Carborro (if you like indie)

Mark (MarkR), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 21:18 (twenty years ago)

There is none in Cary. Go to the following cities in this order:

- Chapel Hill/Carrboro (Cat's Cradle, Local 501, The Nightlight)
- Asheville (The Orange Peel, Grey Eagle)

POSSIBLY:

- Charlotte
- Greensboro

Google those venue names.

there's a hell of a lot of excellent Indian food in Cary

if you did CD Alley already, awesome, I'm sooooo fond of that store - School Kids is cool too of course but I always leave CD Alley with something surprising! Tonight in Wilmington (2.5 hours south & east) Smog's playing, I wish to fuck I could go but I am completely exhausted from a week of work & inlaws visiting.

also not to be a pedant but it's local 506. I've never heard of any of the bands playing there tonight & tomorrow.

Banana Nutrament (ghostface), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 23:52 (twenty years ago)

Oh, sorry.

I grew up in Chapel Hill but didn't really go see any live shows while there, so I'm only learning about it now. Most of the time I see shows for the Local 506, it's never shit I've heard of before either, but Wolf Eyes is playing there sometime soon and I'm excited about that.

And re: CD Alley - so true. I love that store with a passion. The guys who work there are so nice too. They always help me find stuff I'm looking for and somehow manage to be knowledgable about pretty much every single CD in the store. I could spend hours in there, and the store is only about 10 x 30 ft.

if you see the Last Nerves playing anywhere, go see them, they're big friends of mine

Haikunym (Haikunym), Thursday, 18 August 2005 01:01 (twenty years ago)

i don't even think CD Alley is 10 x 30 if you count the comic shop next door - the actual floor space is maybe 10 square feet, or at least that's how it seems (maybe they've expanded since I went to school there).

i saw your request on ILE, but I'll just consolidate here and say I never did shit in Cary for the first 21 years of my life except go to the bowling alley, the movie theatre, the mall, and Waffle House.

Chapel Hill is awesome though - I recommend eating at Hector's, Cosmic Cantina, Ham's and Spanky's, and drinking at Woody's and Bub O'Malley's.

In Raleigh the local indie fuxors hang out at a bar called Jackpot, which has a pretty good atmosphere. I found people more friendly down there and actually made friends at a bar (though it helped that my girlfriend approached them first). Sadlachs (sp?) is also kind of fun - a hoagie place/bar that is a very odd mixture of college kids and local weirdos, and they often have bands there.

Jack off in an oboe?

i'm VERY sorry...

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Thursday, 18 August 2005 03:01 (twenty years ago)

My girlfriend's parents live in Cary now. They hate it.

It's worth noting, if you haven't heard this already, that Cary stands for Containment Area for Relocated Yankees. Or, if you prefer, Can't Afford Raleigh Yet.

Hurting (Hurting), Thursday, 18 August 2005 03:03 (twenty years ago)

yeah Cary fucking sucks, no joke. Like Charlotte, the city I live in now, it's one huge business complex.

Regarding Cary, I don't think there's a single music venue there worth going to... or CD store, or band worth seeing, or ETCETCETC. just drive to Chapel Hill and see WOLF EYES at the 506 that will be awesome

Mickey (modestmickey), Thursday, 18 August 2005 06:44 (twenty years ago)

Cosmic Contina - CLASSIC

Hector's - CLASSIC

the rest of that shit - dunno, never been there. I moved away from CH before turning 21 so I never drank there... I'm drunk now though!

Mickey (modestmickey), Thursday, 18 August 2005 06:49 (twenty years ago)

awesome - thanks a lot, guys - i think im going back to chapel hill tonight.

petesmith at SAS camp, Thursday, 18 August 2005 11:13 (twenty years ago)

Who would play this?

bb (bbrz), Thursday, 18 August 2005 11:45 (twenty years ago)

there's a hell of a lot of good furniture in Cary though, you gotta admit

Banana Nutrament (ghostface), Thursday, 18 August 2005 11:59 (twenty years ago)

Also, while in Chapel Hill, if I remember correctly... the Independent (local alt-weekly) lists music events in the surrounding cities too.

Mickey (modestmickey), Thursday, 18 August 2005 12:34 (twenty years ago)

Yeah if you go to CD Alley, try to get out before closing time. I was on a date and the girl and I stopped in there to check it out... I always love going in there... and I guess the guy or girl or guy AND girl who were working there had been drinking a bit and were playing "Sexual Healing" EXTREMELY loudly whilst dancing and grinding and gradually removing one another's clothes.

So yeah... I grabbed Lambchop's "Tools in the Dryer" for $8 and left. She was very embarrassed.

Besides the Cat's Cradle and Local 506, there is a tiny place with excellent shows called NightLight which is basically "behind" Franklin St on Rosemary. Here's it's site: http://nightlight.dyss.net/

Also try out Breadmen's and Carrburritos if you want two more good, cheap food options.

Also, don't miss Nice Price in Carrboro (right past Domino's Pizza). It has a horde of used vinyl. Much more than CD Alley and much more organized. Really, there is much to do in Chapel Hill. And there students don't even return until the next week or two.

matt2 (matt2), Thursday, 18 August 2005 13:10 (twenty years ago)

yeah i miss Nice Price, i wish they had one in Athens, we don't really have anything like that here in terms of a great vinyl store AND a great bookstore under one roof (at least not to my knowledge).

Josh Love (screamapillar), Thursday, 18 August 2005 13:17 (twenty years ago)

there's also like 3 or 4 good indie movie theatres in Chapel Hill too (the Varsity and Carolina on Franklin, and the Chelsea on the west side of town).

Josh Love (screamapillar), Thursday, 18 August 2005 13:22 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, there are definitely reasons I can't seem to leave the area. Also to petesmith, be sure to listen to 89.3 (UNC's station, where I dj:) and 88.7 (Duke's station) as you move about the area. Both are excellent, predominatly free-format programming.
