there is no way a band called ENDLESS BOOGIE could be the best band anywhere.

My Brother (Michael Costello) isn't from New York. We're in Jer-Z.

soft circle are (are? it's just hisham) pretty terrible, actually.

ENDLESS BOOGIE are totally awesome, mr. mooore.

A.R.E. Weapons's new album is almost as boring as their live shows.

Hold Steady, Oneida, Cheeseburger, Slunt, Sex Slaves, Looker...I dunno, there's lots of good bands out there I'm forgetting, too (including a couple other ones mentioned up above).

xhuxk, Thursday, 18 August 2005 21:31 (twenty years ago)

I'm just trying to make myself look cool by picking a band that's obviously not the best band in NYC, thus saving myself the embarassment and hurt of picking a band I actually care about and having someone criticize that choice.

Uh, I mean, Primordial Ooze RULEZ!

Eppy (Eppy), Thursday, 18 August 2005 21:32 (twenty years ago)

oh wait i think i'm supposed to say TRALALA.

Ian John50n (orion), Thursday, 18 August 2005 21:55 (twenty years ago)

or Direct From Hollywood Cemetary.

Ian John50n (orion), Thursday, 18 August 2005 21:56 (twenty years ago)

I also like Hunchback, but they play more in NJ than NY. Mouthus are good.

Bona Roba blow most of these corny noise bands out of the water, fyi

Ian John50n (orion), Thursday, 18 August 2005 22:17 (twenty years ago)

Double Leopards are the only NYC band I really want to listen to, like right now. So, I'll have to say them.

(although I certainly don't mind The Hold Steady. Not sure what the Ex Models sound like as a duo now, otherwise I would have nominated them.)

donut floccinaucinihilipilification (donut), Thursday, 18 August 2005 22:19 (twenty years ago)

(also, I wish I heard Coptic Light, cuz I think I would really like them, but I'm not sure they exist anymore.)

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 18 August 2005 22:27 (twenty years ago)

Actually, Aa blow most of these corny noise bands out of the water, too, come to think of it.

xhuxk, Thursday, 18 August 2005 22:29 (twenty years ago)

And so do the Bunnybrains (unless they count as Connecticut)

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 18 August 2005 22:46 (twenty years ago)

x-post to Alex -

sure, I saw them at Southpaw a couple of months back. Their last album is their best by far.

I'm a huge, borderline irrational fan of Melora Creager's songwriting (if not the gimmicks that surround it, although I don't find the gimmicks unbearable either).

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Thursday, 18 August 2005 22:47 (twenty years ago)

Je4nne ƒur¥ (Je4nne Fury), Friday, 19 August 2005 16:02 (twenty years ago)

rich zerbo has no ilk, he is a unique individual all to himself.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 19 August 2005 16:02 (twenty years ago)

I thought the Bravery were from Boston? Maybe they are now NYC via Boston. In any case, I like the Bravery.. but in the same way I like rice pudding occasionally. It's comfort music.

Well, I like them better than Oneida -- who I've tried to like, but... hmmm, i think they'd work better if they had even shorter songs. I do love me some Jah Division though.

Ian, thanks for the invite. (I might be in NYC circa October. I want to see that Negativland art museum thing happening, and been meaning to come out one of these weekends to see it.)

donut floccinaucinihilipilification (donut), Friday, 19 August 2005 16:10 (twenty years ago)

and so are you, dan

bb (bbrz), Friday, 19 August 2005 16:13 (twenty years ago)

The Bravery have been in NYC as long as I can remember there being a Bravery. And to compare them to Oneida is to compare really middle-of-the-road 80s/00s boring Apples with totally awesome mind-expanding thrilling Oranges. Seriously though, I agree on the short song comment, and I'd recommend you check out one of their older records, Enemy Hogs, which is heavy on the short organ-driven art-punkers and short on the lengthy cock-rock/psychedelia.

Thanks Ben.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 19 August 2005 16:28 (twenty years ago)

"Thanks Ben."

hell, we are a bunch of "cockfarmers" after all

bb (bbrz), Friday, 19 August 2005 16:39 (twenty years ago)

Oneida's catchiest record by far is actually their *Steel Claw* EP, from 2000. But yeah, *Enemy Hogs* is good and concise, too. (Oddly, though, my second favorite is *Each One Teach One*, which has some *really* long songs on it.) Still never heard *A Place Called El Shaddai's*, their alleged live debut album from 1998, though.

Jeanne is right to remember Fannypack and Wide Right when nobody else (inlcuding me) did. I also should have mentioned the Fame, I think.

xhuxk, Friday, 19 August 2005 16:41 (twenty years ago)

3xc3pt3r are the best band on jefferson st.

noizem duke (noize duke), Friday, 19 August 2005 16:45 (twenty years ago)

Not to mention Burnt Sugar.

xp

xhuxk, Friday, 19 August 2005 16:46 (twenty years ago)

Though actually the best band in New York City is probably some totally unfashionable suburban hard rockers in Long Island or Staten Island or some distant Queens neighborhood who nobody in Williamsburg or the Lower East Side or on ILM (me included) has ever heard of.

xhuxk, Friday, 19 August 2005 16:49 (twenty years ago)

The reasons Chuck likes Steel Claw more then Enemy Hogs are probably the reasons I like Enemy Hogs more. Listen to Enemy Hogs, Brian.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 19 August 2005 16:54 (twenty years ago)

Like THE LIZARDS maybe (though I've heard of them, so maybe they don't count. Either way, they're great, even after John Garner left).

xhuxk, Friday, 19 August 2005 16:55 (twenty years ago)

Mike and the Bloombergers!

Confounded (Confounded), Friday, 19 August 2005 16:55 (twenty years ago)

the fame, for those that care, are playing a seecrit show at trash on sun. night...playing all covers (no rick springfield i'm told. some cheap trick though)... if you don't go to see bunnybrains

ha, thats an informed answer then, dan?

bb (bbrz), Friday, 19 August 2005 16:56 (twenty years ago)

Will the Fame cover any Babys or 38 Special songs, bb? They should!

xhuxk, Friday, 19 August 2005 17:01 (twenty years ago)

Xhuxk, do you like The Wedding then? It seems to extend in both directions: 1/2 short plinky music-box stuff with awkward three-part harmonies, 1/2 gigantojams.

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Friday, 19 August 2005 17:02 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I like it, but not as much as some of the early stuff. I kind of think they've lost their ROCK element some in the past couple years. But I still think they're doing really interesting (and really really pretty) stuff. They say the Left Banke is the big inspiration for *The Wedding* I think. Which is cool, but personally I kinda prefer Deep Purple meets Amon Duul (or Creedence meets MX-80 Sound or whatever) myself.

xhuxk, Friday, 19 August 2005 17:06 (twenty years ago)

patrick listed like 5 songs, but i kept interupting him with "jessie's girl" and wasn't paying enough attention...then i told him not to ruin the suprise in case i make it over there...38 special would be the right move though.

bb (bbrz), Friday, 19 August 2005 17:11 (twenty years ago)

And what about Interpol?

zeus, Friday, 19 August 2005 17:14 (twenty years ago)

What about it? :)

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Friday, 19 August 2005 17:15 (twenty years ago)

eedd OTM, Oneida it is. Isn't this the 2nd thread about how Endless Boogie is the best band in NYC? Curious.

mcd (mcd), Friday, 19 August 2005 17:19 (twenty years ago)

I'll third Oneida, and add one more reason: good lyrics. (I know it's not much of a criterion for some of us, but it's a nice bonus nonetheless).

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Friday, 19 August 2005 17:21 (twenty years ago)

It's Steel Rod, not Steel Claw, fyi.
I saw oneida for the ninth time this week. It was at a Kansas City bar called the Pyro Room and it was their best set I've seen, I think. They only played two songs off The Wedding. Still my favorite live band. I haven't seen most of these bands that are battling it out for the ILM title of "Best in NYC" though.

Tripmaker (SDWitzm), Friday, 19 August 2005 17:24 (twenty years ago)

i never grow weary of the "this next one is an Oneida song" gag.

bb (bbrz), Friday, 19 August 2005 17:26 (twenty years ago)

The reasons Chuck likes Steel Claw more then Enemy Hogs are probably the reasons I like Enemy Hogs more. Listen to Enemy Hogs, Brian.

Um, I'll give both a try.

I LOVE YOU DAN BUT I LOVE XHUXK TOO, AND I AM BUT A HUMAN, NOT A TUG OF ROPE FOR ONEIDA DISAGREEMENTS!

( Heavens! ;-) )

Is Fannypack a bad thing nowadays?

Confounded (Confounded), Friday, 19 August 2005 17:37 (twenty years ago)

i was expressing dismay at her assertion that fannypack is one of the best new york bands. bad taste in my mouth. it makes me want to spit.

donut floccinaucinihilipilification (donut), Friday, 19 August 2005 17:43 (twenty years ago)

I really enjoy the musicks of Oneida. I really liked Secret Wars a lot last year.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 19 August 2005 17:44 (twenty years ago)

oneida, grizzly bear, blood on the wall, all get my vote

but i guess that doesn't come as a shock for anyone round these parts.

Adam In Real Life (nordicskilla), Thursday, 25 August 2005 17:03 (twenty years ago)

Mirror Mirror are like the 5th best or something, but all the others have been said.

dan. (dan.), Thursday, 25 August 2005 17:26 (twenty years ago)

Mirror Mirror are indeed cool!

Why would anybody love Levy? I don't get that at all.

The USA is Monster CD is a total mess. Sometimes it sounds like a *great* mess, though. But usually that's when their mouths are closed.

xhuxk, Thursday, 25 August 2005 18:12 (twenty years ago)

mirror mirror are good fun (so were navy), but they aren't topping any lists yet...

bb (bbrz), Thursday, 25 August 2005 18:45 (twenty years ago)

Holy shit. How did this thread go this far without a mention of GOGOL BORDELLO? (I admit, I initially forgot to list them...)

Euje4nne ƒur¥ Hutz (Je4nne Fury), Thursday, 25 August 2005 18:57 (twenty years ago)

three months pass...
I have to say I finally heard Endless Boogie (played live a few weeks ago on WFMU, then gave in and bought the records) and I definitely understand the love. It's like listening to the favorite part of your favorite song over and over. Really good.

mcd (mcd), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 02:06 (twenty years ago)

Levy >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Bona Roba

Bona Roba are just terrible.

Also, Direct From Hollywood Cemetary, although they're great, are from Baltimore, not NY. Whomever said Bamboo Kids is right on.

cdwill, Tuesday, 13 December 2005 05:01 (twenty years ago)

Also, Direct From Hollywood Cemetary, although they're great, are from Baltimore, not NY.

uh, they all live in ny, and i'm pretty sure they formed here, too.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 05:17 (twenty years ago)

Dey formed in Richmond, I thought. But yeah, they all live here now.

well youse would know!

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 05:34 (twenty years ago)

They told me Baltimore when I spoke to them two months ago. Glad to hear that they're local now, 'cause I liked 'em a lot. Fun band.

cdwill, Tuesday, 13 December 2005 06:40 (twenty years ago)

endless boogie fucking ruled in baltimore last night - thanks to stencil and roger for convincing me to go with relentless recommendation.

i hadnt heard any of their stuff before i went in, so i had no real clue what to expect, except that i had heard "extended," "blues," and "dudes" thrown around a lot in online reviews. and thats a pretty solid description, id say. the third (of four) songs was supposedly a cover, and it DID sound a little like "takin care of business," but not quite enough for me to think it wasnt some other cover. but dude, "TAKIN CARE OF BUSINESS" RULES. i mean, ok. there was no piano and the vocals werent anything like BTO. thats not the point. i got the black record, and i cant wait to hear it.

petesmith (plsmith), Monday, 19 December 2005 17:48 (twenty years ago)
