When the beatles were big in the early sixties, the majority of their fans were girls. Nowadays, they are beloved mostly by boys. Or, Men.

When Punk was big in the mid seventies, the majority of the fans were boys. Nowadays, the music and fashions are beloved mostly by girls.

What can yer say?

Alice (5) was going through the "littl bratz" punk clothes in Woolworths going "That's not punk, no safety pin. Oh, that is. That's not. nor that. That is..." and so on...

"When Punk was big in the mid seventies, the majority of the fans were boys."

True, but there were still proportionally (cf: their male counterparts) far, far more punkettes than there were teddy girls, modettes, skinettes, headbangerettes, or indeed anything-else-you-might-care-to-mentionettes.

I rather suspect that a major part of the issue was that identifying yourself with any youth culture movement in those days was a far more serious, and infinitely more dangerous, undertaking.

Oh and you certainly couldn't buy "punk" clothes in Woolworths.... well, except those dayglo "jelly" sandals, which were great with contrasting fluorescent teddy-boy socks!

My big sister was one! A punk, that is, not a boy...

Please tell Alice with my compliments that you're supposed to put the safety pins in yourself - if the manufacturer puts the safety pin in for you, it ain't punk.

Are Woolies still sealing all their copies of Never Mind The Bollocks in brown paper bags? Bless 'em.

Peer at them for long enough and you'll see a lot of them are actually boys

Have you been also been finding that they play music too loud in pubs (besides which, most of it's rubbish and you can't hear the words) and that the policmen are looking younger and younger these days?

I actually saw a foetus in a police uniform outside the Holborn Tube station this morning!
