if one wants to see the london improvisers orchestra perform, how does one go about it?

is it like a secret cabal or can anyone show up? do they charge? 'donations appreciated'?

tom west (thomp), Saturday, 20 August 2005 10:54 (twenty years ago)

Do they still do the first Sunday of every month at the Red Rose? A fiver on the door, the performers outnumbered the audience whenever I saw them but some amazing music would happen at least once or twice at every performance. Take a look at http://www.l-m-c.org.uk for details I guess.

Actually, I've been wondering about this too, because I can't find mention of it anymore, on the lmc website, in the wire.

i've been meaning to go for quite a while now, but have never seemed to be in the right place at the right time. And the minute it's possible for me to go, they disappear off the lmc calendar...

e. sawmy (noname#1), Sunday, 21 August 2005 00:00 (twenty years ago)

here is another calendar, never seen 'em though 'donations' are exactly what it means - give if you can/want to.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 21 August 2005 11:15 (twenty years ago)

thanx julio!

i think i shall try and see them next month.

tom west (thomp), Sunday, 21 August 2005 13:06 (twenty years ago)

Do they accept canned okra?

Rockist_Scientist (hair by Joelle) (RSLaRue), Sunday, 21 August 2005 13:40 (twenty years ago)

cool.

now the next problem is which way do i go once i get out of seven sisters tube station, because the last time i tried to go I got lost, probably becuse i was tired and running late...

probably the opposite of the direction i went last time i suppose...

noname#1 (noname#1), Sunday, 21 August 2005 15:40 (twenty years ago)

If you're going to the Red Rose go to Finsbury Park station (NOT Seven Sisters) and turn right when you come out onto Seven Sisters Road. Then it's about a 10 minute walk.

x-post They'd probably accept beard shampoo, if such a thing exists.

Here's what it looks like! Although I can only see 2 beards here, so maybe I'll withdraw that "joke".

Blimey I didn't know Tom Ewing played trumpet in the LIO!

(see pic above)

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 22 August 2005 10:38 (twenty years ago)

Julio can you tell me anything about those people? I think the only one I have heard of is Savage Pencil /:

tom west (thomp), Monday, 22 August 2005 12:12 (twenty years ago)

Oh don't tell me he's doing music an' all now

Diddyismus the Blind (of Alexandria) (Dada), Monday, 22 August 2005 12:14 (twenty years ago)

pleasure drenching improvisers - its a duo - made up of sonic pleasure (bricks played wiuth a set of spoons) and THF drenching (dictaphone etc). they only sell CDRs as far as i know though both of 'em made an appearance on derek bailey's 'limescale' group (haven't checked out their incus disc but seen 'em).

stefan jaworzyn is a gtr player - wz in the ascension group w/tony irving (drums).

and googling reveals that dylan nyoukis is from decaer pinga. heard of 'em but not tracked down anything.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 22 August 2005 12:57 (twenty years ago)

Nyoukis also used to record under the name Prick Decay, and runs the Chocolate Monk label which releases lots of excellent noise by various underground scumbags (inc. the best Skaters alb i've heard.) Saw Nyoukis and pals play at subcurrent this year - merzbowesque electronic noize w/ slight improv overtones, so the duo w/ stefan cld be a treat, think i'll try and go to this (the date is def the 1st, is it Julio?)

savage pencil has been making music for at least as long as he's been drawin+writin

Ward Fowler (Ward Fowler), Monday, 22 August 2005 14:01 (twenty years ago)

savage pencil has been making music for at least as long as he's been drawin+writin

With markedly less success it would appear

Diddyismus the Blind (of Alexandria) (Dada), Monday, 22 August 2005 14:03 (twenty years ago)

Okay - who wants to identify some of those folks in that there picture? (is that Lol Coxhill there?)

NickB (NickB), Monday, 22 August 2005 14:10 (twenty years ago)

(I saw Dylan & his wife playing as Blood Stereo in Brighton on Saturday night - Karen was getting a bunch of feral grok from a karaoke machine wired into lots of electrical doo-dads & Dylan was doing his thing with a fucked-up fiddle plus, err, vocal improvisation. They were in good form I thought. I guess their sound quite organic with varying degrees of tension and noisy release. Always strikes me as tending to the primal and instinctual side of things rather than anything too cerebral.)

NickB (NickB), Monday, 22 August 2005 14:25 (twenty years ago)

(Stephen O'Malley is in Khanate, Sunn o))) & various other things obv.)

NickB (NickB), Monday, 22 August 2005 14:27 (twenty years ago)

(I had a Sav. Pencil rekkid once - at least I think it were he - "Rot In Hell, Mom" by the Kray Cherubs. Not bad - horribly distorted biker punk with lots of yelling and stuff.)

NickB (NickB), Monday, 22 August 2005 14:30 (twenty years ago)

(I'm guessing that maybe it's just a display of Savage Pencil's art though. I think Nyoukis is exhibiting his paintings too)

NickB (NickB), Monday, 22 August 2005 14:33 (twenty years ago)

yeah its the 1st sept andrew. don't have price info.

after getting that email info i went off to play one of drenching CDR I have (distributed through his fenland hi-brow label) - this duo should be great - very mysterious sounding, I can't picture the making of these sounds or how their conception. I followed it up w/playing one of the cuts from a FURT record. should be a cracker.

(Lol is the only one I recorgnise on that pic, and EWING obv).

yeah this gig is to mark the opening of this gallery thing - googling 'alma enterprises' you get info on the gallery space.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 22 August 2005 22:17 (twenty years ago)

catherine pluygers on oboe, harry beckett to the left of "tom ewing" on trumpet, not sure about the rest; a somewhat depleted line-up by the looks of things - normally they are about 30-ish in number.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 04:58 (twenty years ago)

oh i have the limescale record. i might see if i can make it to this one, because i never could work out which bits of the noise were the dictaphone

tom west (thomp), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 09:40 (twenty years ago)

the magic of limescale, according to DB, is that you can never properly tell who's playing what.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 10:10 (twenty years ago)

i have to admit that makes me feel slightly better.

tom west (thomp), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 15:03 (twenty years ago)

(bump)

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 1 September 2005 14:41 (twenty years ago)

blimey it's a triple decker! dot to dot tonight, diary/fractured/s curves tomorrow, LIO on sunday!!

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 2 September 2005 06:41 (twenty years ago)

Did you go to the old thingy last night Julio?

NickB (NickB), Friday, 2 September 2005 07:19 (twenty years ago)

I might go on Sunday

Raymond Douglas Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 2 September 2005 07:35 (twenty years ago)

Yeah (it was 'donations' too, btw). it was also cramped and really hot with a haze of smoke on top. not that it mattered when jaworzyn played with THF/drenching tho', those 10 min alone were all round excellence.

there was some noise crap right between that and nyoukis et al so I had to leave before they even got on.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 2 September 2005 07:52 (twenty years ago)

(to catch the last train)

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 2 September 2005 07:53 (twenty years ago)

Ward Fowler (Ward Fowler), Friday, 2 September 2005 09:58 (twenty years ago)

tom west (thomp), Saturday, 3 September 2005 13:28 (twenty years ago)

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 3 September 2005 13:58 (twenty years ago)
