Vashti Bunyan - Lookaftering

I'm listening to this right now. It's very pretty, but I'm not yet sure it's much else. Some of the songs are better than others. Her voice sounds pretty good, if a little quiet. So far, none of the guesting has been at all intrusive.

yeh, its nice and all but ...

zappi (joni), Saturday, 20 August 2005 23:32 (twenty years ago)

(i dont want to say anything negative cos it would be like kicking a kitten or something!)

zappi (joni), Saturday, 20 August 2005 23:33 (twenty years ago)

who are the guests?

tom west (thomp), Saturday, 20 August 2005 23:40 (twenty years ago)

where did you get it from?

hi, Sunday, 21 August 2005 05:26 (twenty years ago)

how's the li'l jon track?

s1ocki (slutsky), Sunday, 21 August 2005 05:27 (twenty years ago)

What a terrible title!

mcd (mcd), Sunday, 21 August 2005 18:12 (twenty years ago)

What a great title!

Raw Patrick (Raw Patrick), Sunday, 21 August 2005 18:13 (twenty years ago)

rather underwhelming, nice production though

rizzx (Rizz), Sunday, 21 August 2005 18:16 (twenty years ago)

The songs and the vibe are certainly not as strong as her first record. It also sounds unfinished (it still sounds like they need to do some mixing / mastering on the record). And that last track sounds like a scratch track. I'm VERY happy that I didn't hear any Fourtet beats or Devendra's voice though.

Salvador Saca (Mr. Xolotl), Sunday, 21 August 2005 21:39 (twenty years ago)

But I know what you mean, Mel. It's just a pretty record and not much else. The first couple of songs were nice and then it was sorta more of the same.

Salvador Saca (Mr. Xolotl), Sunday, 21 August 2005 21:42 (twenty years ago)

When does this come out?

Mickey (modestmickey), Sunday, 21 August 2005 22:39 (twenty years ago)

17/10

jimmy glass (electricsound), Sunday, 21 August 2005 22:45 (twenty years ago)

pretty..but i think it'll take a wee bit to really overwhelm me...im touched, now, after one listen...

bb (bbrz), Thursday, 1 September 2005 19:12 (twenty years ago)

one month passes...
it's quite beautiful. it is not eons away from Just Another Diamond Day. There's some very nice instrumentation here, the backwards guitar is nice.

kyle (akmonday), Friday, 14 October 2005 20:20 (twenty years ago)

i'm going to go out on a limb here and say that Lookaftering is better than Diamond Day. Seriously. The new one sounds more mysterious and dark than the old one, which often falls into unbearable twee-ness. Lookaftering sounds more like the album I wanted JADD to be before I heard it. If that makes any sense.

tylerw, Friday, 14 October 2005 20:50 (twenty years ago)

no, that makes sense.

kyle (akmonday), Friday, 14 October 2005 20:51 (twenty years ago)

JADD sounds so twee it hurts my nuts

that completely makes sense. lookaftering really benefits from the beautiful production

rizzxeheheh (Rizz), Friday, 14 October 2005 21:33 (twenty years ago)

lookaftering sounds, pretty much, like a full album of "Crown of the Lost" which is exactly what I wanted it to sound like.

kyle (akmonday), Friday, 14 October 2005 21:35 (twenty years ago)

three weeks pass...
This is a fabulous album. 'Here Before' is so creepy it makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end.

righteousmaelstrom (righteousmaelstrom), Monday, 7 November 2005 21:55 (twenty years ago)

she was on BBC Radio 4s "Womens Hour" this morning, you can listen to it again by clicking the "listen again" button on this page http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/womanshour/

zappi (joni), Monday, 7 November 2005 23:15 (twenty years ago)

Jesus, she was painfully bad on the the Jools Holland show the other week, really quite embarrassing

Oh No, It's Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 8 November 2005 10:19 (twenty years ago)

her voice has barely changed in 35 years.

other than the final track, which really should have been left off, i like this. the songs are generally weaker than JADD, but there are some truly amazing moments (can't remember particular titles offhand though). i'm happy with the production, but of course banhart had to make his contribution louder than everyone else's.

john p. irrelevant (electricsound), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 23:23 (twenty years ago)

"here before" is one of my favorite songs of this year. it could be a mediocre song, but the production with the gock (both forward and backward) and her singing kind of echoed throughout, its amazing.

jonathan - stl (jonathan - stl), Friday, 18 November 2005 18:10 (twenty years ago)

or glock*

jonathan - stl (jonathan - stl), Friday, 18 November 2005 18:14 (twenty years ago)

Everyone keeps metioning the production. Wasn't it produced by Max Richter? It's funny, his involvement is the only thing that made me even remotely interested, but I'm not sure I should buy it just because he produced and arranged it. I find his Blue Notebooks to be one of the masterworks of this decade easily, but I'm not sure if his involvement in this is worth my time. What do you all think? Is his presence noticeable? Does it sound like a Max Richter album with Vashti Bunyan vocals?

matt2 (matt2), Friday, 18 November 2005 19:43 (twenty years ago)

i can't think of another album i've cried my eyes out to as much as this one.

is anyone else having this experience with it?
i love lookaftering so much, it's really just amazing.

reo, Monday, 21 November 2005 03:44 (twenty years ago)

eight years pass...

Almost cried listening to Heartleap at work today. The most beautiful thing I've heard in a while.

J. Sam, Wednesday, 8 October 2014 22:45 (eleven years ago)

otm quite beautiful

Mordy, Wednesday, 8 October 2014 22:45 (eleven years ago)

Looking forward to this. I hope the production's as spot-on as Max Richter's job on Lookaftering.

ilxor, Thursday, 9 October 2014 01:13 (eleven years ago)

I wasn't thrilled by Lookaftering, hope this is a bit better

Free Me's Electric Trumpet (Moodles), Thursday, 9 October 2014 01:26 (eleven years ago)

if you disliked lookaftering i can't imagine this will do anything for you

outback bumfuc (electricsound), Thursday, 9 October 2014 01:34 (eleven years ago)

that's a bummer, I really love Diamond Day, but it's probably unrealistic to expect she'd go back to something like that

Free Me's Electric Trumpet (Moodles), Thursday, 9 October 2014 01:56 (eleven years ago)

Give it a listen Moodles, it really is very extraordinarily good and straight into one of my faves of the year status.
