startrekman, Sunday, 21 August 2005 06:02 (twenty years ago)

its fucking genious. you must admit it. better thread question: who does NOT like dancing queen?

jmeister (jmeister), Sunday, 21 August 2005 06:05 (twenty years ago)

also id say their are only maybe two songs that arent classic on arrival. the title track being the one track that i remember being a bit cringe-worthy, especially compared to the others.

jmeister (jmeister), Sunday, 21 August 2005 06:09 (twenty years ago)

haha uhhh

jeremy jordan (cruisy), Sunday, 21 August 2005 06:16 (twenty years ago)

I like "Dancing Queen," but there's about 10-12 ABBA songs I like more.

dancing queen is the song which incarnates the crapness of the 70s best. and the worst thing was that you couldn't escape that song. i must have heard it much more than a hundred times at parties, on the radio, in pubs, on tv, in discos etc. the only abba song which made the no.1 in the us. yeah, it is that bad.

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Sunday, 21 August 2005 07:14 (twenty years ago)

the triplets of strings are magic.

their best album.

agnetha's stockings, Sunday, 21 August 2005 07:15 (twenty years ago)

i once played tennis in the court next to a guy who was saying "motherfucker" and "asshole" a lot, and at one point he started irritatedly singing "waiting [sic] the rest of our liiiiives" while he sat there waiting for his tennis partner to serve.

i laughed and thought, "i gotta use that sometime."

I always thought it was their best song, in terms of
structure and uniqueness. The sectional changes are
neat, as the verse builds dynamically/harmonically into
the chorus, which is elaborate for the Abba standard.

(other than that, abba makes me puke. But my dyslexic
friend has no trouble spelling their name !)

James R., Sunday, 21 August 2005 08:37 (twenty years ago)

major part of my life. overplayed - sure. luomo should be so good.

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Sunday, 21 August 2005 08:40 (twenty years ago)

It's genius, pop doesn't really get better. I hardly ever hear it at weddings etc. any more, people have it in their heads that it's overplayed, it probably is, but it's still a shame not to hear it.

Tom (Groke), Sunday, 21 August 2005 10:36 (twenty years ago)

It's weirdly slow for a song about dancing.

The best thing in the song is the weird mode of address, "You are the dancing queen, young and sweet, only seventeen" etc. where you are put in the position of being a seventeen year old girl whether you like it or not. Are there any other songs like this?

I also love the line "Feel the beat of the tambourine." Tambourines do not get enough praise.

"Feel the beat from the tamborine, oh yeah!"

Magic.

stevo (stevo), Sunday, 21 August 2005 12:11 (twenty years ago)

The most overrated song of theirs by a million miles.

"S.O.S" shits on it from a great, splattery height.

Oh, and ABBA is the shiznit.

Related in my mind to 'Dancing Queen' is Olivia Newton-John's 'Magic' from Xanadu.

But what model of Moog?

Raw Patrick (Raw Patrick), Sunday, 21 August 2005 23:23 (twenty years ago)

startrekman, Monday, 22 August 2005 03:03 (twenty years ago)

I'm still pondering the thread title.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 22 August 2005 03:06 (twenty years ago)

"Dancing Queen" hardly needs defending. It's a certifiable classic by a band with loads of them.

AaronK (AaronK), Monday, 22 August 2005 14:30 (twenty years ago)

< rockist > I really like the Redd Kross cover. It made me realize "Holy shit, this is a great song after all". Weirdly, after that, I kind of liked the original when I heard it in the grocery store. I could sort of see it as some kind of pop-pop Boston in the huge glossy production. < / rockist>
