ive always thought it was the former, but the other day someone i was talking to swore it was the ladder. also, dero said in an article that it was the ladder, but i think that makes a point for my side

It's the lather, not the foamer.

There was an episode of "6 Feet Under" the other week named "All Alone," after the former interpretation. They played the song twice during the episode, and both times I'm certain it was clear he was saying "all in all." I read somewhere that it's "all in all" on In Utero and "all alone" on Unplugged, but I don't hear it.

(I know this not because I'm a "6 Feet" fan but because I had to edit a review of the episode at work, and the writer had gone along with the "All Alone" version, which prompted spirited debate in our newsroom, with about 4 copyeditors doing Google searches. We couldn't find anything that seemed definitive, so we left it.)

I seriously think it's "all in all"

I always thought it was "All we know is all we are."

You know, like that philosophical belief that our own individual existence is the only thing we can be sure really exists?

The one that I can't remember the name of?

Solipsism?

but "all alone is all we are" sounds MUCH better, am i right?

JD from CDepot, Sunday, 21 August 2005 16:30 (twenty years ago)

Yes! Solipsism!

It makes so much sense. Plus, that's what I've always heard (and sung, pretending I'm Pat Smear or Dave Grohl, but probably Dave, because "Smear" is just kind of a gross word).

Justin, Sunday, 21 August 2005 16:52 (twenty years ago)

Okay, I just listened real close, and it's GOTTA be "all we know is all we are." There's no "N" sound after the third syllable, so I can't imagein it being "all alone."

Justin, Sunday, 21 August 2005 16:54 (twenty years ago)

Just to complicate things, just spun the "In Utero" and "Unplugged" versions. I think he alternates. Ain't that a pisser.

The liner notes in my In Utero cassette say "All in all is all we are."

i was skimming through his Journals at Borders a while ago, and Kurt wrote something like "im amazed that rock critics write all of these pseudo-freudian interpretations of my lyrics, when 90% they have the wrong lyrics"

i guess he did change them, i mean, he was on SO much heroin constantly, you know?

JD from CDepot, Sunday, 21 August 2005 18:22 (twenty years ago)

seconal is all we are

paulhw (paulhw), Sunday, 21 August 2005 20:03 (twenty years ago)

I think it's "All in all is all we all are."

I always thought it was "All we know is all we are."

Me too. Lyric sheets are often wrong anyway.
