despite "death letter," no way does wolf not take this, at least in a wrestling match. nelly on steroids vs. cab calloway's uncle.

I agree. I enjoy Wolf's music more than I do Son House's. There's more boogie in it.

Voodoo Child, Monday, 22 August 2005 00:58 (twenty years ago)

no one WAS his music more than howlin' wolf. nobody.

Haikunym (Haikunym), Monday, 22 August 2005 00:58 (twenty years ago)

Plus Howlin' evev has his own stamp

If you really think about it, Son House had more blues that Howlin' but...That damn voice beats Son anyday

Voodoo Child, Monday, 22 August 2005 01:02 (twenty years ago)

Wolf for sure. "Down in the Bottom" is the underrated masterpiece.

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Monday, 22 August 2005 01:05 (twenty years ago)

Wolf was one of the 5 greatest American singers of the 20th century. We can argue about the other 4, but he's on the list no matter what.

(my other 4: Ella, Dylan, Patsy, Hank)

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Monday, 22 August 2005 01:26 (twenty years ago)

I'll trade Dylan for Jimmie Rodgers.

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Monday, 22 August 2005 01:29 (twenty years ago)

What about JC Chasez?

Voodoo Child, Monday, 22 August 2005 01:30 (twenty years ago)

(1) I like both equally.

(2) This is an "apples and oranges" debate - I could understand Wolf vs. Muddy, or Son House vs., say, Mississippi Fred McDowell, but pitting Wolf vs. House is like comparing a freight train to a ten-speed bike

(3) Going by that Wolf doc on DVD, in that scene where Wolf is performing at an afterparty and House is heckling him, I would have chosen Wolf to be the king since House was too drunk and docile that night

Rev. Hoodoo (Rev. Hoodoo), Monday, 22 August 2005 04:19 (twenty years ago)

Everybody OTM. But I believe it's "Wuff."

rogermexico (rogermexico), Monday, 22 August 2005 04:50 (twenty years ago)

I do believe the fella's right.

Hoodoo, the first thing I thought of is that documentary. That clip of him on "Shindig" with the Stones bearing witness is the shit.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Monday, 22 August 2005 05:53 (twenty years ago)

Who is the backdoor man?

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 22 August 2005 06:02 (twenty years ago)

Son House was a "wetbrain."

edd s hurt (ddduncan), Monday, 22 August 2005 14:38 (twenty years ago)

what does that mean, edd?

Haikunym (Haikunym), Monday, 22 August 2005 15:09 (twenty years ago)

Wolf, by a country mile.

Fact is, Son House had those brilliant cuts from the late 20s/early 30s, and the Library of Congress recordings from the early 40s, and little else. His comeback recordings post-65 are sloppy and limpid. The man's brain was a mess from drink.

Wolf was on fire from day one until at least 1973 (Back Door Wolf is a killer album).

Wolf has the voice and the better catalog, but goddamn if Son House doesn't make the hair on the back of my neck stand up to this day.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Friday, 1 February 2008 08:34 (eighteen years ago)

Read thread title as "Howling Wolf vs. Son Hoos," btw.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Friday, 1 February 2008 08:34 (eighteen years ago)

"Son House is still enjoyable to this day."

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Friday, 1 February 2008 08:34 (eighteen years ago)

If the Lord said, I've got this time machine and you can go back and talk to one rock 'n' roll music figure from the past--I know you like that shit, personally I prefer a good Gregorian Chant or Julie London if I'm feeling randy--I'd pick Howlin' Wolf.
